A. L. driving along a French road in a snazzy convertible one dark night, miss a toad and hurtle off a cliff into a ravine. Shortly after all three regain consciousness the girl becomes (separated tiom her badly injured companions. It Ik at this point that harlie Gruesome, the Neanderthal Man, makes his appearance.

Charlie is an excellent example of what Vgly Pills can do for a fellow when taken regularly. By way of welcome, Charlie (that isn't his real name at all, but Mr. Neanderthal sounds so formal) breaks the legs of these two fellows who have dropped in on him ito unceremoniously, and tosses them into his lair. For a fellow whose frontal lobe is pitifully small, Charlie possesses some remarkable reasoning powers. By breaking their legs his captives cannot ocspe, yet they can be kept alive indefinitely, or at least until he works up an appetite and decides to devour them.

When it comes to solving the problem of what to do with unexpected guests it must be admitted that Charlie makes Emily Post look like an amateur. It develops that Charlie's first captive was the girl, but for reasons best known to him alone he didn't break HER legs. Perhaps he should have, because he had no sooner thrown her Into his cave than she hightailed it out the hack way and down a fire escape or its neolithic equivalent. This girl, whose cerebrum is miniscule compared to Cha'-lie's (gad, man, that's awfully wanders hack Into the crve just as tharlie lumbers in through the front entrance in search of hors d'oeuvres. Just then one of the two guys, who incidentally is a member of the State Department (no kidding), remembers that he has a loaded pistol in his pocket.

After a brief soliloquy in which he Kays that he has always hated firearms, having found debating to be a far more effective weapon, he manages to pump seven pellets into Charlie, thereby rendering the poor bloke deader'n a frigid mackerel. The fact that the gat used to do Charlie in was a six-shooter is irrelevant and immaterial. Member of the State Department are not concerned with such things. I imagine that many TV viewers of this stirring drama their lights out. on its completion, climbed into bed and slept fitfully throughout the night.

But can this play be dismissed so lightly? I doubt' it. There is a distinct possibility lurking in the dark recesses nf my suspicious mind that the drama was not the cut-of-theordinary horror tale it innocently pretended to be. Terhaps it was a stark form of symbolism and the Neanderthal Men represented Russia! The State Department feller got nowhere with his bribes of money and eloquent logic. Could he have represented Dean Acheson, and was this Herbert Swope gentle way of pointing out that force is Dean's only logical weapon when dealing with Russia? Or, wa this entire plot merely part of the safe-driving campaign? Was Swope using his sponsor's time to point out that three In the front seat, and turning left Into a road that doesn't exist, can often cause acute discomfiture? I could continue to delve for hidden meanings and discover more symbolism, and more safe-driving lessons, but I'll quit now. By continuing I might find a Cro-Magnon Man, or possibly Brother Piltdown.
