CONANT Moadinger Funeral Parlors For your comfort our Chapel Is Air-Conditioned 1120 Flatbush Avenue Tel. BUckminster 2-0247 Tasted Age of 4 Continued from Page 1 middle of the roadway, 20 feet from headquarters, and stood in the downpour as he emphasized a point to his chief of staff, Col. J. C. Harbord.

The general talked, and as he talked, his eyes strayed to the forlorn brigadier general in the doorway. He stopped, then spoke again, and in a moment the chief of staff left Pershing and approached Dawes. With friendly hands, he buttoned the two middle buttons of the brigadier general's overcoat, while in a kindly voice he said: "This is a hell of a job for a chief of staff to be doing, but the general thinks you look sloppy." That was Black Jack Pershing. General Pershing, the doughboys said, could spot an upsidedown button or an unpolished rifle at 100 paces. He was a strange man, this taciturn soldier, a curious mixture of stern disciplinarian and man-of-theranks.

There were, in reality, two Pershings; one a cold, hard tactician who demanded implicit obedience. the other an emotional. considerate man of quiet, personal charm. During the grueling months of World War I. the two Pershlings alternated and the combination led the great military strategists of the Allies to look in awe at the tall, erect, spare American general who said so little, but thought so keenly.

Democratic and simple in his manner. he was readily approachable by men who had business with him and they were given straightforward replies in his rich, drawl. Black Jack was never an orator. He once confided to intimates that "I never could look squarely at three persons star. ing at me and expecting me to talk to them, without wishing were out on a firing line." His elocutionary powers were limited to addressing his soldiers and a officers on military affairs, but when he spoke in this vein, his face lit up with animation and his words coma pelled attention.

"When I was young. I could talk and talk a hell lot." he said on another occasion. had to talk because I taught school gang of roughs back home if wasn't good. tina they'd have let me know it and quick! What happened to tie his tongue was infinitely sad. He was frightened by a little boy who yawned in his face one afternoon when he was instrucing a geography class.

"He yawned at me, right out." the General said aghast, "Then he went to sleep never could speak before an audience again." John Joseph Peshing's beginnings were plain. His father lived in a railroad section house en part of a seven-mile section of the Hannibal and St. Louis Railway, half way between Laclede and what was then Bottesville, now Meadeville. Missouri. In this shanty, on a quiet night in 1860, when quicklening rumbles of North and South discontent were on the verge of erupting into Civil War, young Pershing was born.

His father was John Fletcher Pershing, a sturdy Methodist minister just over from Alsace, in France. His mother was Ann Thompson Pershing, born in the hills of Kentucky. John was first. and soon eight sisters and brothers followed in rapid succession. To provide for his rapidly growing family Mr.

Pershing was forced to abandon the ministry and seek occupations that were more lucrative. In turn, he tried to be a storekeeper, tavern owner, farmer, traveling saleman and land de- veloper. With native French thrift and hard headed toil he soon Announcement Kearns Sons Funeral Home, located at 1504 Bushwick Avenue, corner Furman Avenue (one block from 14th St. Subway) has just been equipped with a Chrysler Airtemp air conditioning plant, installed by the Airaconda Air Conditioning Co. of New York.

Storming into the valley behind a fusillade of shots, bandit horde galloped into village square, sending the townsfolk scurrying for cover. Little John was up in front, crouched beind a horse post, watching wide-eyed as the natives, defending their scanty possessions, fought hard against marauders. Shots whistled over the boy's head and jagged rocks flew through the air, and when the dust had lifted two men were lying dead in the hot sun.
