Many researchers have grieved over that lost census. But BY SETH DUKES MCLEAN COUNTY NEWS SDUKESMCLEANNEWS.COM I found some other information for him on his grandfather, but the details from the 1890 census were forever lost. The 1890 census schedules differed from examination of the records of the Bureau of Census and other federal agencies reveal a far more GLENDA WILLIS point, no record is available of where it was stored or any possible use of the 1890 schedules between 1922 and 1932. Examining the records of the Bureau of Census and other federal agencies reveals a complicated and genuinely tragic story of the following chain of events. In December 1932, in accordance with federal records procedures at the time, the Chief Clerk of the Bureau of Census sent the Librarian of Congress a list of papers no longer necessary for current business and scheduled for destruction.

He asked the Librarian to report back to him any documents that should be retained for their historical interest. Item 22 on the list for Bureau of the Census read "Schedules, Population 1890, Original." The Librarian identified no records as permanent, the list was sent forward, and Congress authorized destruction on February 21, 1933. At least one report states the 1890 census papers were finally destroyed in 1935 and a small scribbled note found in a Census Bureau file states "remaining schedules destroyed by Department of Commerce in 1934 (not approved by the Geographer) were these records overlooked by Library of Congress staff? Who in the Census Bureau determined the schedules were useless, why and when? After the fire in 1921, there was uproar over the storage of census records in the Commerce Building. Newspapers such as the Washington Herald and others reported the events of January 10, 1921 and decried the loss of valuable, irreplaceable records. People were crying for a safe and secure archive to put such important records.

Ironically, just one day before Congress authorized destruction of the 1890 census papers, President Herbert Hoover laid the cornerstone for the National Archives Building. The annual Thunder on the Green drag boat event will take place on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 in Livermore. Sonny Renfrow, who helps organize the event, expects that there will be more than 2,000 people in attendance and 50-70 racing teams involved in the event. Saturday's time trials will begin at around 10 a.m.

On Sunday, pairings will be set up and finals will occur sometime after 11:30 a.m. A $10 wristband must be purchased in order to gain entry to the event. This wristband grants access for both days and gives full entry into the pits. Children age 12 and under are free as long as they're accompanied by an adult. Renfrow says ear protection may be appropriate for younger children.

Historians say the soggy 1890 census was "charred around the edges" in the days after the fire. Officials apparently tried to dry it out, but after that complicated story, one that is a genuinely tragic chain of events. A man came in to the Research Center a few weeks ago wanting to locate his grandfather and asked if we had a copy of the McLean County 1890 census.

His grandfather died in 1892, so 1890 was the last census record for him. I had to tell him that the 1890 Census was lost in 1921 when its many bundles were left outside of the vault in the basement of the Commerce Department building in Washington, DC. When a fire of unknown origin broke out, the bundles were first in the path of the firemen, who pumped hundreds of gallons of water on the fire, soaking and filling the basement, and then left without trying to salvage or recover the records.
