BUckminster 2-0247 EDGAR LEE MASTERS, 80, RIVER' POET, DIES Melrose March 6, (U.P)-Edgar Lee Masters, 80, poet- author of early "Spoon River Anthology," died today in a convalescent home. He was stricken with virus pneumonia three days ago.

Masters, one of the nation's best known had been more or less an invalid since an attack of pneumonia in December, 1943, in New York. His second wife. Ellen, 30 years his junior, was with him when he died. Also surviving are son. Hillary, a their 21, Washington newspaperman, and two children by his former marriage.

The couple came here three years ago. Mrs. head of the English department at Ogontz Junior College for Girls at nearby Rydal, Pa. Masters was a successful Chicago lawyer when he turned to poetry at 45. He published "Spoon River Anthology" In 1914 and six years later retired from his law practice to devote himself to literature.

Although Mrs. Masters said she had believed her husband was 81 "Who's Who in America" lists his birth date as Aug. 23, 1869, at Garnett, Kan. An artist friend Found the poet alone in a New York hotel in 1943. He was suffering from pneumonia and mainutrition Since he had no financial resources he was placed in a charity ward in a city hospital.

When Masters' condition was called to the attention of the Author's League that organization provided funds for him to be moved to a private hospital. In 1946 he received a $5,000 fellowship from the Academy of American Poets. More than 70 editions of "Spoon River collection of poems about small town life, were printed translated in nearly every country in the world. It. was presented in opera form at Venice, three years ago.

A native of Kansas, Masters was brought up at Petersburg in southern Illinois. The anthology, named after the river which flows near Petersburg, was a collection of epitaphs in the graveyard of the town. During his last years he was contemptuous of American poetry, asserting that "American poets today have no conIvictions." Adrian Norbert Renz, 35; Holy Cross Ex-Football Star Adrian Norbert Renz, football star at Brooklyn Prep and Holy Cross College, died suddenly Friday of a heart attack at his home in Lowville, N. Y. That morning he had completed the sale of the Renz Oil Company preparatory to returning to New York.

"Norbie" Renz was born in Flatbush, March 17, 1915. He attended Holy Innocents School before going to Brooklyn Prep. He was graduated in the class of '36 at Holy Cross. In 1942 he married Anne Walsh of 599 90th St. They had five children, Adrian Norbert, Dennis Elliot, Pierce, Mary Ann and Brian Floraine.

He is also survived by his father, L. Everett Renz of the U. S. Industrial Chemical Company and American Distillery Company; a sister Mrs. W.

E. Flannery of Hempstead, and two brothers. Justin of Larchmont and Hillary Elliott of Hempstead. "Norbie" was a "watch charm" guard, a 169-pounder in a line of 220-pounders on one of the teams coached by Dr. Eddie Anderson.

The lightest of the family, he joked that he was also the dumbest, getting only "football marks" at Holy Cross, but proved he was the best guesser with an IQ of 146. on admission to the Corps in 1941. A solemn requiem mass will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Ignatius Church, 84th St.

and Park Manhattan. The mass will be conducted by his (cousins, the Rev. Joseph D. Ostermann, the Rev. Frank A.

Ostermann and the Rev. Joseph L. Ostermann. Until shortly before the mass the body will be at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Church, Madison Ave.

Price, -Price Firm Ex-Officer Funeral services for Julian Price, who retired last year as chairman of the board of the Balch Price Company, operators of fur specialty stores, with offices at 380 Fulton will be held at 8 o'clock tonight at the Fairchild Chapel, Atlantic Ave. He died Saturday in Doctors Hospital, Manhattan, at the age of 80. His home was at 146 Montague St. Mr. Price, who also had been chairman of the board of the Lamson Hubbard Company of Boston, an affiliate of the Balch-Price Company, was a former Assemblyman.

He served at the Albany post from the 12th A. D. here from 1899 to 1900. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. was graduated from New York University in 1892, and three years later was admitted to the bar.

He was a former attorney for the State Controller Kings County, specializing in resident transfer tax matters. A brother, Henry Allan Price of Newtown, survives. Le Brun, Pre-War President Of France, Pneumonia Victim Paris, March 6 (U.P.) -Albert LeBrun, last pre-war president of France, died today. He was 79. LeBrun died of pneumonia: at 7:30 a.m.

Pope Pius XII officiated today at a pontifical mass for 525 Holy Year pilgrims who were led to Rome by Archbishop Francis Cardinal Spellman of New York. The mass, conducted in the Ducal Hall of the Vatican Pallace, was the first mass Pope Pius conducted for Holy Year pilgrims.

Cardinal Spellman administered Communion to 150 of the New York pilgrims at the hourlong service. Fifteen U. S. Army officers and men from Frankfurt attended. The pontifical mass was highlight of the visit of the New York delegation to the Holy City.
