A Bob Nork was som Hilltop. And I never knew Bob had been an outstanding athlete at Georgetown. That is until last week. Ill tell you how it all came to light for me. I received the May-June issue of the Georgetown Magazine, a publication which keeps the alumni informed about the happenings at the tradition-packed school overlooking the Potomac River.

CN T-shirt with the inscription Hoyas 1984 National Champions, as three of the players look on. On top of page 32 are one-inch pictures and thumbnail stories of six former Georgetown student-athletes who were inducted into the G.U. Athletic Hall of Fame in February, but who were only recently honored at the schools awards dinner. There was Bobs picture. Smiling.

The way I remember seeing him most of the time at Garfield and Pope Pius. Writing this, I flash back to the one time long ago when we had a brief talk about Georgetown. I tried to find out what sport he participated in. I should have asked Bob what sports. Again, Bob made no big thing in answering.

I played some in a number of sports, Nork said. Some? Thats an understatement After reading the Georgetown Magazine, Id say Bob was quite an athlete at G.U. He earned nine letters in three sports in three years. He was identified as one of the most versatile athletes ip He never blew his own horn. He was soft-spoken and the one who broke me in in 1968, said Frank Dawson, the Garfield High School athletic director.

Dawsons reference was to the late Bob Nork, who was a football and baseball coach and athletic director at Garfield and later coached Pope Pius High Schools football team in Passaic. I never heard him brag. He went about his work in a business-like and quiet manner, Dawson said. His 1948 Garfield team was state co-champion with Joe Coviellos Memorial High of West New York. Now, you might ask, why is Augie writing about Nork a little more than a year after his death on July 10, 1983, in Shenandoah, from whence he originally came in the middle-1940s.

He was 76. When Nork was coaching at Garfield and Pope Pius, we were aware the other were graduates of Georgetown University. He was the class of '28, and I the class of 41. But we never sat down and shot the breeze about the good old days at the the schools history. The 1928 Ye Domesday Book, the class year book, notes: Bob is the only athlete in our time who has sported the Blue and Gray with distinction in three sports.

Never flashy but ever consistent and determined. Bob has been our high-scoring halfback for two years, the guardian of the hot corner of the baseball team, and the fact his teammates selected him captain of the basketball team for 1927-28 attests his brilliancy in the sport The magazine goes on to say that Nork was named to the All-East football team in 1927 and two All-America teams. He turned down offers from the Philadelphia Eagles in 1928 to sign with the New York Yankees, but later opted for a coaching career at Shenandoah High. Bob died after being elected (o the G.U. Athletic Hall of Fame.

He had been told about his upcoming induction. I regret so much never really having a real good bull session with Bob about Georgetown. We probably would have had some good laughs. 40 () 5 2 40 0 Most of the 40 pages in the magazine contain action pictures and stories of the- Georgetown Hoyas capturing the 1984 National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball title.
