By HERMANN HELMS Members of the Brooklyn Chess Club turned out in force to witness a spectacular exhibition of simultaneous play by Larry Evans, champion of the Marshall Chess Club and New lorK btate titienoider a year ago, Evans, a full-fledged master at 17, who will rdepresent the United States In the international tournament at Hastings, was in brilliant form. Twenty-two of the members faced him at as many boards and only one of them, Sol Gu-ber, was able to outwit him. One other adversary, Philip Cohen, escaped defeat and drew in a difficult ending in the last game to be finished. The re maining 20, each in his turn, acknowledged the young man's mastery. The latter complete score was 2014 Ivt.

After a long series of first prizes In speed chess, Evans had to play second fiddle to Louis Levy of Kew Gardens, who was a resident of Brooklyn before the war. Formerly a var sity player at New York Uni versity, Levy nau not Deen so active of late, but displayed his old-time form when he scored. 11W VA. at the Marshall Chess Club. Haines has won 31 out of pro outings DAmato has skein of 35 out of 36 starts. I wo sixes and three four round! bouts are also scheduled. 3, MOVING AROUND By RALPH TR08T Leon Hart, the huge kid from Notre Dame who got the Helsman Trophy at the Downtown A. C. last night, seems to be going to do it the hard way.

That is, accept a pro contract, get married and get around to engineering later. A really personable lad this scarcely 21-year-old who starred for three full seasons. He might make a topflight engineer. But if he's going to do as he has planned, he's going to be one of the few who have. There have been quite a few who made pro football pay for post grad courses, for medicine, dentistry or law.

But how many as married men? To listen to Hart, that game against S. M. U. was tougher even than read or sounded. Matty Bell's lads had a fancy lineup arranged.

It puzzled the Irish. "Every time we got Into a huddle we'd put our heads together and try to figure out something," Leon aid. Evidently this was one game that caught the Notre Dame coaching staff off balance. That sort of thing happens more than we hear about. The master minds at the ends of the phones from the tress box to the field don't come up with the right answers.

Just as some coaches work so hard and get themselves so set on certain patterns of play, they can no more untrack themselves than kids who get either all tied up, or so lax It's impossible to get 'em back to normal. Not that It's so abnormal to have youngsters sell themselves some strange bills of goods. As we saw It, Army couldn't untrack against Penn. And Navy couldn't untrack against Army. Just as Columbia got stuck in the Yale game not to overlook Pitt against Indiana or Vlllanova against Tulsa.

Some of those woefully lopsided, and unexpected scores, are as chargeable to coaches as to the boys. Tom Hamilton, former Navy coach and Graduate Manager and now G. M. at Pitt, is in town. Pitt really has Itself an All -America schedule next year in Duke, Ohio State, Rice, Northwestern, Miami, West Notre Dame, Michigan State and Penn State.

"How good will Duke be?" we asked. "They've got some fine ends coming up and a flock of good backs. They'll be all right. "And Ohio State?" "Wes Fesler loses a lot of his first string after the Rose Bowl game, but he had a fine Jayvee team. That's well-rounded aggregation, Ohio State." "And "They're playing some seniors, but it seems to me that their strength now lie3 in the juniors who will have another ear.

That's a fine line. That's how they keep such good control of the ball." "And the Penn delegation to Miami?" "Y-3S. there are a lot of Penn boys down there. But don't overlook the fact that some of the best backs are local hoys. Andy Gustafson has a good team now and it should be much better." "Notre Dame?" "Depend upon them," said Hamilton.

"Michigan State?" "They're coming tip with a good team and one of the best passers around. With a perfect name for a passer Willie Thrower, a colored lad with terrific hands." "Penn State?" "Will be much improved. They'll lose Rogell, of course, the quarter and a fine guard. And the so-called farm system, the Teacher's Colleges which have handled so many freshman ends. But they'll be strong next year." "And your school, Pitt?" "We're doing all right.

We had a pretty fair freshman team to draw from," said Hamilton. All of which gives a pretty good line on part of the 1950 season. Paging Carl Hubbell Oklahoma City, Dec. 8 (U.R) The son of a former baseball great from Oklahoma took his seat in the Senate yesterdayas a page. Carl Owen Hubbell.
