Don't let the warm spell worry you If you cannot do anything more effective, why scrape a hard pencil against a school slate it may cause your blood to run cold. IMAGINATION It is a great thing It performs wonders Rightly exercised it may enable you to bear without notice the warm embraces and oven-like breath of a scorching, roasting and blistering hot wave! Think of things that are cool. When the ambitious thermometer is turning itself into a soaring balloon, hunt up a dictionary and search for words like these ICE, COLD, FREEZE, FROST, ICICLES, HAIL, SNOW, COLDER, FROZEN, CHILLY, ICEBERGS, ARCTIC, SLEET, COLDEST, FRIGID, CHILLS, GLACIERS, BLIZZARD. But there is something better than all this and it is within your reach at a very small cost. Buy a round-trip ticket TO CAPE MAY on that cool, breezy and pleasant Palace Steamer REPUBLIC.

YOU CAN KEEP COOL ON HER DECKS. Just take an hour off to-day and interview some of the passengers who were on board the Palace Steamer yesterday. A reporter of this paper was sent out on that missionlast night. He furnished the city editor with the following memoranda FOIIGOT II Kit SEALSKIN. MISS JKXX1H JOXKS.

of North Eigh-tccnth Ftrcct, Fitys: "Yes, I was on board the Kopnhlic yesterday. Bnt I did not enjoy myself as I should have, owinp; to the fuct that I had left my sealskin sacquo at home." CI.EAKIXti AWAY ICK LKS. MR. DONALD Ifl'OHKK, of South Broad street, says I had it delightful day. I borrowed an ister from the Captain, who keeps a supply on baud for forgetful It was a charming trip, inert) was much to see.

1 lie iceboats near New C'astlo presented a novel sight, while I was really surprised at tho skill shown by the deck hands of the Kepublic in clearing the railings ot icicles. We were detained a few minutes nt Cape May lauding, owing to the fact that the cautious Captain gave positive orders that tho gang planks he cleared of the ieo before passengers were allowed to land." SXOW OX THE IU IiniCWE DECK. IUS. IiOCISA of North Sixteenth street, says Yes, we were 011 tho liepublic yestorday. I had myboys along and wo went on board early.

They had a splendid time. Thoy at once got acquainted with some of the deck htinds. and helped them to shovel the snow off tho hurricane deck before we left Race street wharf. The theatrical show, however, was a disappoint ment in several respects. Two of the singers had bad colds; the principal dancer could not dance as well as nsual, owing to frost-bitten feet, while one of tho actors in tho comedy had severe chills.

We enjoved the skating immensely, and MIC. "THOMAS J. A WW'S superb and difficult skating won the admiration of all." POU A COLD DAY. MIC. THOMAS KIMCriSK, of Walnut street, says: "I had a jolly day on the Republic.

It was very chilly on board, but a steaming hot breakfast in tho splendid restaurant put me in fino humor and good trim. The dinner was sumptuous and the supper tempting. It is a great boat, even if I did catch a touch of neuralgia from sitting near an cpon window on tho main deck. Somo person who had been dancing had selfishly raised it." OYKUCOATS OX THE MVSKIAXS. MTSS XIXLIK SWIFTOK, of German-town, says: "1 was on board tho Palace Steamer yesterday and the dancing was charming.

1 think, however, tho dancing music might bo improved if thetieneral would request the musicians not to wear their heavy overcoats during the dancing hours. The mammoth coats interfered with the free movemeuts of thoir arms. I did not go iu to bathe at Cape May, as tho ocean was full of floating ice." THAT STllOXG COOK WIX'19. MK. HATCIIAIV, of Spruce street, Buys; "I am out four dollars owing to Bell Telephone Stockholders Vote to la crease the Cupltal Stock.

At a special meeting of the stockholders of the Bell Telephone Company, held yesterday at the office, 400 Market street, It was voted to increase the capital stock ofthe company from SotiO.OOO to Sl.000.000. Out of a total of 11,000 shares. 9,810 were voted, all being cast In lavor of tho Increase. The object In thus increasing tho capital stock Is to continue the work of putting underground all the wires of the company. Already over representing tho surplus earnings of the company, have been expended on this work, and it is not yet completed.

Before the llrst lrost It is expected that overy line will bo under ground. Tho eystem has so far been comploted from Vino to South street and from the Delaware to Thirteenth street; considerable work has also been done between Thirteenth street and the Schuylkill, and from Front and Market to Fortieth street. The work is being done In accordance with an ordinance passed for the purpose, so far (loti miles of overhead wires bave been taken down. Tho new stock will be oirered to the stockholders at par (510), and if any is left over It will bo sold. S.

Huey, secretary of tho company, stated that he could not toll what tho stock of tho company really worth nt the present time; lthad been so longslnce any was sold, lie did know, however, that ft paid a dividend of 12 per and that in itself showed how valuable It was. "The underground system," continued Mr. Jliioy, "was really a necessity. The complaints about poor service were not unwarranted, but il could not have been improved while the wires were overhead and in so elose proximity to Hie electric light wires. Onr underground system Is the best known, and when it is completed we shall give the public perfect service.
