Armstrong was reported showing significant improvement at a hospital here Saturday, but spokesmen said he remained critically ill with heart and breathing trouble. Doctors at Beth Israel Hospital said Armstrong was taken off an artificial respirator at 7 a.m. Saturday and was breathing more comfortably after a restful night. He is awake, responsive and even smiling, said a spokesman. The 70-year-old performer was put on an artificial respirator Friday after developing a breathing problem that doctors said had left him generally weakened.

It was Armstrongs second major setback since being hospitalized March 15 with a recurrent heart problem and edema condition, the swelling of body tissues caused by ab-normal accumulations of fluids. ree. $158. 4534141 RIVERSIDE (AP) -Detec-' fives worked around the clock Saturday to track down suspects in the shotgun slayings of two policemen ambushed as they answered a phony burglary call: checking out a dozen different leads, but we have not turned up anything yet, said Sgt. David Fry, who said the detective force had been called into the case on 12-hour shifts. He said they were looking for four persons- described as four boys in their late teens seen running from a resi-' dential section in which the officers were slain Friday night.

A shotgun found near the scene was being checked for fingerprints. The officers were Leonard A. Christiansen, 25, and Paul C. Teel, 30, both married and on the force about five years, -Their slayings were the first on the police force since 1943 in this city of 160,000. It was obviously set up for an ambush, a police spokesman said.

There was no robbery. It was a phony call. Police said the shootings occurred at about 9:15 p.m. after the two officers pulled into a driveway of a single-story residence. They said Teel never had a chance to draw his revolver and was gunned down as he got out of his patrol car.

Christiansen fired three shots and radioed for help. I cant breathe, I cant breathe, before he died. The two officers had answered a call about three hours earlier when they and two officers in another patrol car were sent to another section of town to check out a report of a fight, police said. Nothing was found. Teel radioed the watch commander, This looks like it might have been a setup, said police, who speculated that any assailants waiting to strike might have backed off when they saw the two patrol cars.
