P. Bcheln. 170 Broadway. REctor 2-0797. -By TOM Things that one may or may not know about the harbor.

That there are 129 different steamship lines in New York, making this harbor the largest in the world, both In tonnage and number of ships, although several foreign ports dispute this figure and count outboard motor boats and fishing dorays when they sing their own songs of praise. That there are 39 different ferry systems In the harbor, 16 municipal and 23 that are operated by private companies or by Federal departmentsThere were even more years avfo, such as the ferry from Manhattan to the foot of Montague St, with its fare of one cent during rush hours and two cents durln (slack hours, with the result that passengers would wait around the terminal until the rush hour arrived, In prder to save a penny. That the East River is not a river, but a tidal strait. That there are 33 different rivers, creeks and bays merging into the harbor and that we think the Kill Van Kull is the most attractive sounding of all of them. That the dummy funnels, seen on so many modern snips ine Normandie's aft deck is a dummy and contains a luxurious kennel for dogs are hangovers from the old days when passengers thought that a ship with two stacks was much faster and safer than a ship with only one stack.

That in the Winter it is 3,107 miles from South Ferry to Liverpool, but that In the Summer it is 3,219 miles, since the Icebergs drifting down from the North necessitate a different course. That with the exception of the Leviathan, which is tied up at a Jersey pier and seems to be destined to stay there for some time, the two largest ships that list New Must Find New Horror- Each Year for Visitors- Meticulous on Details Think of any historical character you can and I will take you Inside and introduce him to you," said Fred Meers, of 608 Surf Ave. "Na-paleon? Sure, here he is, right over here in this corner." Fred isn't crazy, and 608 Surf Ave. isn't the lunatic asylum. It is the location of Coney Island's biggest waxworks, where Meers Is chief historian and watchman.

During the Winter When the museum Is closed, it is his duty to see that all the exhibits are cared for and to think up new ones to offer to the public for the following season. The Eden Musee, as it is known officially, is crammed with objects of historical and horirble interest, and Meers, who Is 45, lives in a bungalow in the rear of the place and spends a lot of time in research work. Costumes a Problem "The costumes of some of the period tableaus are very intricate and take a good deal of study," he said. "Take the murder of Paul Jean Marat, the French revolutionist, in his bathtub, for Instance. That was strictly a political affair and Charlotte Corday, the murderess, had to be dressed In a gown of that era.

After a bit of study, I got the scene down correctly. Even to the authentic copper bathtub the Frenchman used." The electrocution of Eva Coo which is graphically portrayed in wax, brings many interested spectators to the museum. One woman wrote to Meers, offering to sell him the dress which Mrs. Coo wore during her trial and a number of canceled checks signed by the woman who was executed for slaying her handyman, Harry Wright. The woman, who lives in Oneonta, N.

said she was a creditor of Mrs. Coo. "Many people who are intimately connected with' the waxen scenes we portray often come and praise the likenesses," said Fred. "One woman, upon seeing the figure of the electrocuted Mrs. Antonio, said it was even better than she had looked in life." Swears Figure Moved The bed In which General Lee died also is a part of the exhibit at the Eden Musee.

One morning a man from the Edison Company went into that part of the show where the electric meter is located and came running out, white as a sheet. He swore the figures had moved. Investigation showed that a repairman on the museum roof created noises which had deluded the badly frightened meter reader. "We make sure that no one is left in the place at night when we and put the lights out," said Fred. "They would undoubtedly be scared to death." The next big feature for the Summer which he is now working on will be the assassination of Senator Huey Long.

The figures are created with much labor and a good deal of study. A clay model is made and from that a plaster of parts mold Is constructed. The wax takes some time to harden in the mold. The tinting and arranging of the hair and eyes is an art in itself and one that Fred is particularly qualified for. He has traveled all over the world as makeup and prop man for dozens of shows, and is well versed as a historian and astronomer.

The museum is owned by Samuel W. general manager of the Barnum Bailey, Ringling Brothers circus. Andrew Jackson Club Reception on Friday The Andrew Jackson Club's 53d annual reception will be held in the grand ballroom of the Columbus Club, 1 Prospect Park West, next Friday, when the followers of Chief Clerk of the Magistrates' Courts Thomas A. She had year's residence in the tuberculosis' division of Bellevue Hospital arid since she left BeUevue in 1932 has been with the Board of Health tuberculosis clinics, serving them every afternoon. Seen As Duty In my opinion, an annual X-ray examination for tuberculosis is not only an opportunity, but a duty, to try to control the Dr. Gowanloch said. "Colleges have gathered together large numbers of the most susceptible age group. A proper chest examination taken at the beginning of a college girl's year can determine how heavy a scholastic and athletic program she can carry.

Several colleges do have annual X-ray for tuberculosis, the physician pointed out, naming the University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr, Vassar and Bellevue Medical which started the practice in 1933. Results at Bellevue have determined that of all the students X-rayed in the freshman class, one out of 150 had an early unsuspected tuberculosis lesion. Inexpensive Method A new method of chest X-ray, In which 100 examinations may be recorded on paper plates, at the rate of two a minute, reduces considerably the cost of such X-ray, always an expensive procedure previously. This makes possible wholesale X-ray and presents an opportunity to go after the disease in a constructive way, Dr. Gowanloch said.

Wholesale beginnings have been made, the physician pointed out, by X-raying more than 15,000 adults in Red Hook and in largely populated sections of Manhattan. A plan is also under way, it was revealed, to X-ray some 70,000 high school students In Brooklyn. Tuberculosis strikes in the early 20's or late teens, or between the ges of 18 and 30, Dr. Gowanloch pointed out, and in many cases the only indication in the early stages may be fatigue. Fatigue a Symptom "Tuberculosis Is a young person's disease that develops during the most productive years of a person's life," the doctor stated.

"It is, therefore, a most disastrous disease, economically and. socially. "The first symptoms of fatigue and loss of weight are so easily overlooked and so often attributable to other causes," Dr. Gowanloch ex plained. "Loss of appetite, cough and expectoration are likely to come later, after the disease is well developed.

In early cases, the ordinary health examination of a physician will not determine the disease. An annual X-ray would save many lives. By X-ray, we can pick up early cases and send the student to her family physician for the proper course of treatment. Chest X-ray also Indicates heart disease and In many cases where there had been no symptoms or signs of any heart condition, it is possible to adjust a proper program of activity for a student." Show Other Troubles Such X-rays also show other dif ficulties, such as pneumonia, silicosis, rib anomalies and cardiac conditions. One Adelphi girl was found to be a dextra cardia, that her heart was on the right side, instead of the conventional left.

It is possible also from the chest X-ray to discover malignant growths and glandular disorders. In some In stances, it was possible to detect cases of childhood tuberculosis which had healed. Dr. Gowanloch, a young Brooklyn woman of Scottish and French ancestry, has had considerable training in tuberculosis work, but her ambition is not to specialize in that or any field of medicine. The old-fashioned family doctor who is a specialist in all medical branches is the highest aim of a physician, she feels.

Dr. Gowanloch studied at the Rush Medical College of the University of Chicago and had four years of hospital training in general practice. Rode Ambulance She served lnterneships at Metropolitan, Bellevue, Willard Parker and Beekman Street hospitals and "rode the bus," that is, did ambulance duty, for all four institutions. She had three months of "croup calls," babies who get sick in the middle of the night, while at Willard Parker, and did pediatrics and gynecology at Bellevue, during a year's residence. She later returned to Bellevue for her tuberculosis work.

Her most dramatic service was three months for "emergency surgery" at Beekman Street Hospital, which covered the waterfront, the Bowery during prohibition and Chinatown during the tong wars. Like most physicians, Dr. Gowanloch is reluctant to talk about herself, but pressure did force her to admit: "There was romance in that." To round out her experience. Dr. Gowanloch had a year of psychiatry at Foxborough State Hospital, fc Massachusetts, Wide World Photo Ball for Crews Apex of G.
