Kates to tho Inauguration. INSURANCE mfy (Repu6ftttn A Red Letter Year 1897 Shan Margerum Tells It. J. Shan Macgernin, whose fame as a relic hunter is widespread, also has somewhlc of a reputat.ation as a narrator of incidents which lie meets in his travels, and as he is a keen observer he is continually seeing something out of the ordinary. Ilere is one of his latest: During his receufhunting trip to North Carolina he was driving through the country with a friend, a few miles from Albemarle Sound.

The noou hour drawing nijrh they stopped near a farm house to partake of lunch they had with them. Presently the father, mother and six children, the latter ranging from five years up to being equally divided as to sex. came trooping1 out of the house and For the benefit of those who desire to attend the ceremonies incident to inauguration of. The magnificent facilities of the Pennsylvania Railroad make this line the favorite route to the National Capital at all times, and its enormous equipment and splendid terminal advantages at Washington make it especially popular on such occasions. Uniform Size of Circus Rings. The one ring circus of our grandfathers' day had a ring no larger than each of the three used by the big shows today. Circus horses are trained to perform in a standard ring 42 feet in diameter. In a larger or a smaller ring their pace becomes uneven, irregular and unreliable, and the riders in turning somersaults are liable to miscalculate the curve and miss their footing.

One of the "greatest shows on earth" there are several gave a series of performances in Madison Square Garden, New York. By mistake the rings were made 42 feet 6 inches in diameter. On the first performance three riders fell, and one was severely hurt. Before the second performance the rings were reduced to the regular size. Chicago Times-Herald.

Italians In Tbis Country. There are about 1,000,000 Italians in tho United States. One-third of them are settled in the principal cities. Half of these are laborers. Fifty per cent are illiterate.

A Strange School. It is little one person can do to help the world If he dabbles 'in every reformatory scheme that comes his way. Bnt if he begins by surveying the field, then selects his own particular work and sticks to it exclnsi vely year after year, at the close of his labors here below ho will see that he has done something for mankind. Seven years ago Miss Florence Ha-thorn began teaching a school in the boys' department of tho Chicago common jail.

She has stuok to it. The youths are of the average age of 14, none of them over 16. They are confined in the county jail while awaiting trial and sentence for various misdemeanors. They remain there for periods ranging from a day to a year and a half. Thus the class changes from day to day.

The teacher, of course, can give them no systematic scholastic training, such as more fortunate children outside get. She does the best she can, mostly in the way of oral instruction. They will Btand no maudlin sympathy or goody good preaching. But if they understand that a teacher is genuinely their friend, as Miss Hathorn is, they give her their confidence, so far as such boys can give anybody confidence. They are the street boys who ran wild.

They exhibit mental peculiarities different from those of the child with a good home and regular training. They are deficient mentally in some ways, which their teacher attributes to years of smoking and insufficient nourishment They seem not capable of sustained intellectual effort. They are, however, unusually quick in geography, just as a wild Bedouin might be. Bather oddly, too, they are quick in mental arithmetic. They know muoh more of criminal and civil law than the average boy of their age does, more than some respectable men learn in all their lives.

The school is under the auspices of the Chicago Woman's club. The ladies, so far as is possible, follow up the youths after they are released. In a number of instances they have been ablo to permanently reclaim these wild boys. This is the age of specialization. We could not get on without our own experts in every branch of business, from railroading to pie tasting.

The expert craniologist is one of the most interesting products of the time. He is called in murder and robbery cases to testify from his store of skull reading lore whether the accused has a cranium likely to make him commit the crime in question. In a recent murder trial one of these invaluable experts was called to read the indications of the shape of tho prisoner's cranium. He did it without hesitation, declaring that in his judgment the shape was abnormal and indicated a disposition that would be apt to lead the person to be a lawbreaker. A lawyer placet! before the expert diagrams of three heads.

They were of the kind made when a man is measured for a new hat. "What do yon think of these?" asked the judge "I should say the possessors of such shaped heads were abnormally morbid, replied the expert. The diagrams represented the heads of W. H. Vanderbilt, Senator David B.

Hill and of the judge presiding at that particular trial. Elizabeth, aged 43, wife O. W. Bishop, of Munhall, has died of typhoid pneumonia. Six children survive her, the youngest of whom In four years.

Margerum tossed a large piece of nice, fresh cheese to the eldest boy. The latter eyed the morsel suspiciously and then handed it to his father. The man smelled it critically, run his dirty fingers into it and passed it to the mother, whose sharp nose also took a whiff at the cheese while her snuff stained fingers went plowing into it. She also passed. and it was the turn of another of the children to take a hand in the game.

Each youngster smelled the cheese and the mother was given another deal and this time she sunk her one lonely, hooked tooth into the piece of lunch which was originally a lich yellow color, but which by this timo had assumed a dark hue by reason of much fingerine, then she threw it to the oldest boy, remarking: "Eat it, Jim; it's Jim turned up his nose, and in a regular North Carolina-; backwoodsman drawl answered: "No, I'll bed if I'm going to eat soap," after which he tossed the chei i to Mr. Margerum, whose appetite by i this time had almost flown. Not a member of the family had ever before seen cheese. The parents wanted to try this piece in question, but were suspicious as to its makeup, while Jim, who was evidently the leading authority in tliefamilv, settled the whole matter by his declaration that it was soap. DeKotn and Smith's new opera, "Rob Row" which appears here this evening, score 1 the snvatest hit ever, ktiowu in the comic line on the owa- siou of its first presentation in New York, the story is as follows: The plot deals with est' rales of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the Pretender and his faithful follower, Rob Iloy. At the opening of the first act a party of Highlanders make a raid upon the Mayor of Perth, and appropriated a pum of money entrusted to that worthy for English troops. The Mayor has a fair daughter Janet, who is seeret'y married to Rob Roy, owing to the May-' or's desire to keep on good terms with both English and Scots, he compels' Janet to declare herself first the wife of an old Scotchman, and 'then of a young English ofh'eer. As a mere declaration constitutes a Scotch mar- Janet finds herself the wife of; throe husbands In-longing to opposing factions. Throughout the first act the romantic interest is maintained by Prince Charles and his sweetheart, Flora McDonald, whose advantages have historic foundation; at the end of the act Janet deserts the two husbands provided by her father, and escapes to the Highlands with Hob Roy.

The scene of tne second act is laid in the Highlands, where the Scotch are hiding after the battle of Culloden. Janet as i a highland shepherd, is waiting for the return of Rob Roy, who is in battle. The greater part of the act is devoted to the machinations of the Highlanders to prevent the capture of their bonnie Prince Charlie. The third act which shows the exterior of Sterling' Castle by moonlight, with the English troops in bivouac, sees everything happily arranged. Mistake About Farmers.

DThe McDonald Outlook has this to say about the mistaken notion that farming is a poor business: "Farmers in counting the income and outgo of the larm seem to make no note of the first-class living they get, and they forget they are as free, so far as the time and the manner of doing their work is concerned, as it is possible for men to be. The farmer's life is not one of ease and luxury; neither is that of any other man; but the American farmer of to-day has more opportunities to approach an ideal existence than any other man that ever lived. Congressman E. F. The successful applicants are Dr. J. Y. Scott, of Washington and Dr. J.
