The Herald-News, Thursday, December 1 2, 1 974 23 Despite problems, radio station goes on the air By JAMES D. HILE Falls. This gives a prime listening range of four to five miles. However, the station's broadcasting radius can reach as far as 15 broken station rules and guidelines. However, they claimed it was a racial issue and complained directly to Dr.

According to was the Voice of Mbi series of investigations both by administration and student government groups which led to the mid-spring suspension of funding for the station. A fact-finding commission appointed by the SGA found several things wrong with the student-run radio station. They said accessibility of membership should be improved and to do this the organization must rewrite its constitution. Due to the lateness in the semester, action on the issue was put off until the fall term.

However during lege has finally put an FM radio station on the air. However, despite thp hoopla of Monday's premiere broadcast of WMSC-FM, 90.3 on the dial, there still appears to remain an underlying problem of distrust between the present radio staff and the former manager. WMSC broadcasts daily from 2 p.m. to midnight with newscasts every five minutes before the hour. The station's antenna has been placed near the top of the New Jersey Public Broadcasting tower on the college campus in Little Charles Hecht, station manager at that time, the college could have been broadcasting as early as this past summer if it wasn't for an organizational dispute.

According to interviews with the present station management, the Student Government Association, (SGA) and Hecht, the problem that ultimately doomed the old radio station was the suspension of three black disc jockeys. The action was taken after they had allegedly State (VMS), which later became WMSC-AM. It was the AM station which left the airwaves earlier this year in what can be termed either a "racial" or "personality" dispute depending on who one talks to. In the spring of this year the college was embroiled in a dispute with Hanover Park High School over an FCC license to broadcast on the 90.3 frequency. After an FCC hearing, the commission decided that the college HerldNewi Photo by Jim Hannajan Disc jockey gets ready for broadcast.

25 CARDS Calculator 1 the summer months a seven-person task force was appointed to continue work on the FM station which was suspended while the investigations proceeded. Hecht was the chairman of this group which, was. paid by the college as part-time help. When September approached Hecht announced his resignation for the now-defunct station and returned to academic pursuits. The new WMSC-FM was formed not long after the' former station manager's resignation.

Headed by James Johnston, a junior from Bloomfield, the station construction proceeded until this past Monday's premiere. Johnston doesn't like to talk about the old discord, prefering to concentrate on the future. He stresses that things have changed dramatically since last spring. One thing he says is better is student accessibility to the station. This is reaffirmed by Lee Martin, a 31-year-old professional adviser to the station.

Martin commented he would like the organization run along democratic lines with the membership deter- mining what is broadcast. Another thing added to ease any racial tensions was the Third World Program Unit. The group is to plan and broadcast a set amount of shows aimed towared minority interests. Martin said the Monday broadcast was the earliest time the station could operate. He cited construction as well as programming problems which delayed the premiere broadcast.

Martin also chided the previous management with "unorthodox purchasing practices," which lead to half the equipment in the station belonging to the college and rest to the SGA. The adviser is still trying to get everything in order and to actually trace who owns what. One thing he does know for sure is that one Revox tape recorder valued at $1,800, is missing. Michael Messina, SGA president, is hopeful over the new station's future. He says that the reorganization this fall has overcome the two major problems of student accessibility and race relations.

He is also firm in his belief that WMSC is a student-run operation despite the fact the college holds the FCC license and vital pieces of broadcasting equipment. As for the administration's point of view, Lawton W. Blanton, dean of students, does not foresee any future situation where the college might turn over the license to the SGA. He says that as long as the radio station is responsible in its broadcasting, there should not be any administration interference. The quality of the broadcasting is another sore point between the new and old station management.

Whereas Martin and Johnston believe in open participation and a democratic process, the previous management was more demanding and restrictive in who actually got on the air. He believes professionalism should be the goal of the organization and this is directly linked to the student talent available. One thing he and Hecht agree on is the need for an AM station. VMS and the old WMSC had an AM outlet to the dorms whiflwas used as a training ground for future FM broadcasters. Martin would also like to see this established, but it will have to wait until the FM problems are all worked out and the programming procedures are set.
