But he was called safe and the Pioneers went on to win. A missed call and a mentall mistake cost us the winning run, said Brewer manager Gary Calhoun, "We hit the ball well all night and they hit a couple of 0-2 pitches that hurt us. Calhoun commented on Carters performance by saying, His job is to hit home runs and lead the team in RBIs which he is doing. Calhoun also stated, (Todd) Edwards not in the lineup hurt us. Edwards leads the Brewers in batting with .410 clip.

Helena is now at the .500 mark again at 8-8. Gate City is climbing out of the cellar a little by winning two in a row and upping its record to 4-12. The Brewers play tonight against Idaho Falls at Kindrick Legion Feild at 7 to open a three-game series with the Braves. Carter, commenting on his four homers stated, It is special, but its my job. Also having a steller night batting was designated hitter Tony Coble. The well built Coble scattered three consecutive singles and raised his batting average to .340. Coble, who has adjusted very well to the higher level of baseball, said Its a lot better than college, but its something I should handle. Carter and Coble combined for six of the seven Brewer hits.

After both teams goose egged the first two innings the Pioneers put some numbers up first. In the top of the third, Gate City managed to bunch together three singles and it resulted in a run. Buck Atwater and Tony Marabella hit their singles to center and right. Gary Adams sliced a single to score Atwater to go up 1-0. The Pocatello team added a run to their lead in the fourth.

Carter lumbered home on Juan Flores sacrifice fly to frail 2-1. Gate City had scored two innings in a row and third was a charm. Hector Ortega walked and was followed by Sanchezs single to right. With two on and the count 0-2, Akihiko Chiyomaru drilled a three-run homer to left-center and the Pioneers took a four-run lead. Chiyomaru was only batting .194 on the season with one home run.

But the Brew Crew said we can match that and did in a big way. Gordon Powell walked to lead off the inning. With two outs Gordon scored on a passed ball. Yet, things were just getting under way for the Brewers. Randy Hood walked and Vince Castaido lined a single.

With men on the corners, Carter sky-rocketed a shot to tie the score at 5-5. Both teams failed to score for the next three innings due to good relief pitching. In the top of the ninth with one out, Atwater doubled to the gap in left-center. It was followed by Marabellas single and Atwater came around flying. Hoods throw from third was right on the money and Flores applied the tag on Atwater who appeard to be BASEBALL A Toronto Cleveland Detroit Milwaukee Baltimore New York Pioneer League At A Glance By The Associated Press Northern Division 75 569 500 6 250 10 L.I.

Spotorno went two-for-two at the plate and drove in three runs along with pitching a complete game and limiting Coeur Alene, Idaho, to four hits as the Senators cruised to a 10-3 victory. He pitched superbly, said Helena coach John Merrick. He scattered four singles over seven innings. He was the difference today.

Spotorno, who doubled in the game, raised his mound record to 6-4 as the Senators improved to 16-16 on the season. Helena plays twice today, meeting Anacortes, at 10 a.m. and then the Great Falls Electrics at 4 p.m. The American Legion baseball tournament concludes Sunday. The Senators had another good offensive output as they outhit the team from Idaho 14-4.
