2B Th Independent Record. Helena. Thursday, July 5, 1990 STAN SMITHS TENNIS CLASS BASEBALL'S TOPTEN By The Associated Press Based on 720 at Bats ft ifcni ay Before you hit a low percentage tirst serve, make sure you have a strong, accurate second serve. You should be able to hit -your second serve to the opponent's weaker side, deep and with spin. It you can do this 10 times in a row, then you can afford to hit a lower percentage first serve.

twerce A reliable second serve gives you the freedom to do more with your first serve. A common mistake is to take a wild swing at the first serve, and hit a push, dink second serve. 3 Griffey Sea RHdsnOak Guillen Chi DParker MM Plmero Tex Jacoby Cle EMertinei Sea Harper Min Seltzer KC Puckett Min Trammel Del Fielder. Kevin McDonald was pitching masterfully for the first five only two runs five hits while striking out six Pioneers. He then promptly walked two batters on the minimum of eight pitches and gave up a RBI single to Chiyomaru which was followed by, a Gary Adams three-run homer, all with two outs, bringing Team Internationale right back into the game at a 7-6 count. Mark Rupp came on in releif, after Jim Heiigeist singled to center, to get Satoh to ground out ending the Gate City threat. Helena manager Gary Calhoun said, McDonald was throwing hard, but then got wild. It was a learning experience for me as well, as far as recognizing when a pitcher is tiring and when to bring in The Brewers got it going again in bottom of the sixth.

With two outs Castaldo lined his second double to center, Edwards intentionally walked and releif pitcher Trey Wilburn was brought in but walked the next two batters, the second of which brought in Castaldo giving Helena an 8-6 lead. Gate scored another run in the eighth to finish off the scoring at 8-7. Helenas record now stands at-8-6 and the Brewers are in a second place tie with Billings four games behind Great Falls. Perhaps the biggest oversight by the fans was Barry Bonds ninth-place finish in the NL outfield. Bonds is hitting .329 with 14 homers, 55 RBIs and 21 stolen bases. Defending division champion San Francisco and Chicago each placed two players on the starting NL team. Giants third baseman Matt Williams, who has 16 homers and 64 RBIs, finished second to Sabo VIO UUIUcia, rvolaj Willi OlJjiriO votes.

Im happy, but Im not surprised, Sabo said. I almost got elected last year and I stunk. Its a popularity contest. It doesnt mean youre the best by any means. It must means a lot of people want to see you play and I guess I had a lot of fan support.

The reserves and pitchers for both leagues will be announced Thursday. semifinals Court where the match had been scheduled, had trouble with his first serve throughout the match and' never established a rhythm. Its a tough court to play on because the wind is really blowing in on one side, Gilbert said. -But (Becker) put up with it well." Curren wasnt upset about playing on Court 1, but he was dismayed about the power of Ivanisevic. What can you do when a guy goes wide at 120 mph on his second serve, Curren said after barely ticking a service winner by the Yugoslav in the fourth set.

The next serve was an gee. I saw a lot of balls go by, Curren said. I dont think Ive been aced 25 times before. The fans dont worry about good or bad years. They just vote. San Diegos Benito Santiago was elected for the second straight year at catcher but will not be able to play because of a broken arm. Mike Scioscia of Los Angeles was the runner-up at catcher with 571,378 votes to Santiagos 1,785,412. Rookie catcher Todd Zeile was third with 570,971 votes.

The NL outfield consists of Chicagos Andre Dawson, Philadelphias Lenny Dykstra and San Franciscos Kevin Mitchell. Dawson will be making his sixth start and Mitchell (19 homers and 45 RBIs) will be starting for the second year in a row. Dykstra, the majors leading hitter at .368, is the first Phillies outfielder to be elected since Greg Luzinski in 1978. Dyk- stood almost a head shorter than Lendl but didnt yield anything when it came to attacking the net and booming back serves. Lendl has yet to play up to the leveT hes capable of so far at Wimbledon, and has struggled through four four-setters.

8 15 m. NATIONAL LEAGUE (AP) Ivan Lendls grass jaw took a pounding, his legs buckled and he stumbled into Wimbledons semifinals Wednesday against a spunky little -slugger playing the match of his Jife. Lendl, the best player never to win Wimbledon, survived an uninspired effort that perfectly matched, the dreary, rainy English weather and beat 120th-ranked Brad Pearce 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to set up a meeting with 1988 champ Stefan Edberg. Edberg, a 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 winner over Christian Bergstrom, had as easy a time as three-time chain- pion Boris Becker, who beat Brad Gilbert 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. Becker will next meet serve-blaster Goran Ivanisevic, who dealt out 25 aces in downing Kevin Curren 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), Ivanisevic, the first unseeded player to reach the semis at Wimbledon since 1986, upset Becker in the first round of the French Open last month.

After a four-hour rain delay that scattered quarterfinal matches all over the All England Club, Lendl seemed as if hed just been woken from an afternoon snooze when he took Centre Court against Pearce, then ap- peared to sleepwalk through much of the match.
