Pitt Turns to Fazio Alter Sherrill Quits 1976 season, Pitt officials had tried to makeJtTlfore difficult for Sherrill to resign by writing a clause into his contract calling for him to buy out the remainder of his pact should he leave before it expired. Texas officials apparently have agreed to bear the costs of the four years remaining in the Pitt agreement. -Sherrill refused to comment on the value of the fringe benefits in his new contract. But he described the 6-year pact as one that could be renewed yearly at his discretion, making it, in effect, a lifetime contract. Fazio would disclose no terms of his pact other than to say It was comparable to Sherrill's first agreement with Pitt.

Fazio also said he could guarantee recruits he would be around to witness their graduation. Sherrill, a native of Duncan, was Texas second choice. Michigan head coach Bo Scbembechler turned down a 10-year, $2 million offer last Friday, Sherrill was believed to be among the top candidates to eventually succeed Bear Bryant at Alabama. He played seven positions for Bryant teams in the mid-1960s. Sherrill became head coach at Pitt in 1977, succeeding Majors, who left for Tennessee.

Sherrill was Majors top assistant at Pitt 1973-75, was Washington State head coach in 1976, then returned to Pitt. He also worked as an assistant coach at Alabama, Arkansas and Iowa State. PITTSBURGH (UPI) Coach Jackie Sherrill turned his back on Pittsburghs powerful football program Tuesday to accept a multi-year, milliondollar deal as coach and athletic director at Texas Assistant head coach Serafino Foge Fazio, a former Panther football star and a favorite of players and boosters, was named to replace Sherrill. Sherrill's leave-taking puzzled Pitt supporters, who have lost two bead coaches in five years despite a winning program. Generally, it is losing teams, rather than winning ones that lose coaches.

But Johnny Majors left Pitt days after his Tony Dorsett-led team claimed the 1976 national title with a victory over Georgia in the 1977 Sugar Bowl. Likewise, under Sherrill who replaced Majors, the Panthers have finished No. 2 the past two seasons and with 18 of 22 starters returning next season will be early favorites hi the race for another national crown. Sherrill, 38, made it clear that money and security came before the ties he felt to the Pitt team and program. He told a news conference the contract he agreed to with Aggies officials was a 6-year deal that can be renewed annually through his lifetime.

The base salary, he said, is $95,000, compared with $60,000 at Pitt. But th.ere are numerous fringe benefits that Sherrill was a tremendous asset to me and he was a friend of mine, Fazio said. He allowed me to grow. He was my strongest supporter. Fazio said he had asked six of the eight assistant Pitt coaches to remain on hfe staff and was waiting for their responses.

He said he would announce the makeup of his staff Wednesday morning. Sherrill, however, said he was taking at least one assistant, George Pugh, with him. Pugh nearly was fired in December for his involvement in a scheme to scalp Sugar Bowl tickets, but Sherrill talked Pitt officials into letting him off with a suspension. Sherrill promised not to recruit any Pennsylvanians for one year, which should help Fazio hang onto some of the local talent leaning toward Pitt. Fazio said several times that he regretted Sherrills decision as much as he relished a chance to be head coach.

I hate to see him go, Fazio said. The players hate to see him go. Pittsburghers hate to see him go too. Just two days ago, Sherrill was honored as Man of the Year in Sports by the Dapper Dan Club of Pittsburgh, following a mail-in vote by the public. Made wary by Majors unexpected resignation after the will boost the overall value of the pact to a reported $300,000 yearly.

"It was a very difficult and emotional decision to make, Sherrill said. Ive been here since 1973 (when he arrived at Pitt as Majors assistant) "I came as a young, tough abrasive football coach, and I experienced the city of Pittsburgh. It was like putting sandpaper on me and it transformed me into a very polished person, he said. The decision to go to Sherrill said, was made strictly logically. You pUw things out, where Im going to be in five, 10, IS years.

He said the fact that he would be athletic director as well as head coach weighed most heavily on his decision to go to where university President Frank Vandiver fired Aggies coach Tom Wilson to make way for Sherrill. I dont consider this a changing of the guard, a major change, Fazio told a news conference shortly after Sherrills announcement. It's a continuation The Pittsburgh football program will continue to be successful. Fazio, 42, a native of neighboring West Virginia, was the architect of Pitts defense, ranked first statistically among the natkms colleges the past two years. Fazio paid his predecessor high tribute during his news conference.

Only One Dissenter On Tar Heel Rating I Royals Seeking Ninth Cage Win I NEW YORK (UPI) Its North Carolina all the way except for one lone dissenter. Thats the story Tuesday in the latest weekly ratings by the UPI college board of basketball coaches. Forty-one of the 42 coaches from around the country agree that North Carolina, with its 13-0 record, is the No. 1 team. But one coach whose identity remains a secret, because of an agreement with the National Association of Basketball Coaches of the United States is bolding out for Missouri.

Missouri received the other first-place vote in this Boys Swimming Michael Richardsdn, white uniform, rejects a field goal attempt Tuesday by.jCeitic center Robert Parish. (UPI Photo) averaging close to 25 points a game, and handle the Dolphins' pressure. Theyre similar to us in that they full-court press, applying man-to-man pressure and double team the ball, notes Walsh. We must also be able to stop their fast break. I feel we should be able to get the ball Inside, but I am concerned with their aggressiveness defensively and the fact that they play a gang-bang rough game.

"Rochester was a quick team that shot the ball very well. They handled LeMoynes pressure very well In the early going and were up 10 points most of the game. We're going to have to handle their zone press. Two years ago we got oft to a big lead at the half and then missed numerous layups off their press. It cost us the game at the end.

Scranton coach Bob Bessolr also Intends to apply pressure on LeMoyne and will stick with his usual starting five pf guards Todd Bailey and Mark Hutchinson, oenter Bryant Thorn-well and forwards Tom Kosln and Mickey Banas. By JACK SEITZINGER The University of Scranton will attempt to boost its record to 9-3 tonight when it takes on Division II rival Le-Moyne College at 8 oclock at Syracuse, N.Y. "LeMoyne is a young team, says Scranton assistant coach Bob Walsh, who scouted the Dolphins in a four-point loss to Rochester on Monday night. They have two senior starters -Mike McDermott, an excellent player who Is their leading scorer and can shoot the jumper, and Chris Lacomb, who is six-six and very strong inside. LeMoynes other starters are point guard Paul Galvin (5-1), freshman Wright Lassiter (6-5) and Jim Bova, a 6-2 sophomore transfer from Potsdam State.

The key to their team might be Don Murcko, a six-seven freshman who can teally shoot coming off the bench, says Walsh. He's really a good player and usually comes In for Lacomb. The key to a Scranton win, according to Walsh, is to stop McDermott, who is Celts Win, 111-107 College Scores United Prut IattratttnMl But AIC 79, Bentley 89 Arnhem 83, Norwich 71 Babson 79, Gordon 94 Bapt Bible 77. I have no idea if we deserve it, Lemons said Monday night after the Longhorns beat Texas Christian 105-89. I really dont know who deserves it. WBBM-TV quoted Ditka as saying he had accepted the job following a meeting with Bears owner George Halas earlier in the day. Neither Halas nor other Bears officials were available to comment on the report, but Dltkas wife, Diana, said in a telephone interview in Dallas that her husband had accepted the job.
