The Independent Record, Helena, Thursday, June 28, 1990 raaim IMtefls ptujDO mi swpirostgs, pklk OSUs Payton No. 2, goes to Seattle NEW YORK (AP) Derrick Coleman went to the New Jersey Nets with the first pick before the NBA draft took on a shooters look Wednesday night. Coleman, a 6-foot-10, 235-pound All-American forward, was the all-time leading rebounder in collegiate history and Syracuses all-time leading scorer with 2,143 points. He was a starter for four years for the Orangemen and was almost universally considered the best NBA prospect. With Coleman taken, big men became a scarce commodity.

Of the remaining 26 picks in the first round, 13 were guards or perimeter players. Seattle took 6-3 Oregon State point guard Gary Payton and Denver followed with LSUs 6-1 Chris Jackson, a 29-point scorer in his two years in college. Not since Detroit took Isiah Thomas with the No. 2 pick in 1981 has a guard been taken as high as Payton. Then came 6-7 Dennis Scott of Georgia Tech, an outstanding perimeter shooter who was taken by Orlando, and 6-5 guard Kendall Gill of Illinois, selected by Charlotte.

The string of shooters was broken when Minnesota selected 7-0 Felton Spencer of Louisville and the Sacramento Kings grabbed 6-7 Player of the Year Lionel Simmons of La Salle with the first of their record four first-round picks. The Kings later selected guard Travis Mays of from one college team in the same year. Forward Loy Vaught was selected by the Clippers with the 13th pick and forward Terry Mills was Milwaukees selection at No. 16. Indiana had three players taken in the first round after its undefeated national championship season in 1976 Scott May, Bobby Wilkerson and Quinn Buckner.

UCLA matched that in 1979 when David Greenwood, Roy Hamilton and Brad Holland were chosen in the first round. The Nets, whose 17-65 record was the worst in the NBA last season, havent had a first-rate first-round selection since Sleepy Floyd in 1982. Since then, they have taken Jeff Turner, Pearl Washington, Dennis Hopson, Chris Morris and Mookie Blaylock. Only the last two, Morris and Blaylock, are still with the team. Coleman was considered the top prospect in the draft, but questions about his attitude left some doubt the Nets would take him.

Ifn a warm, loving kind of guy, Coleman said. I think most guys from the inner city get a bad rep. At Syracuse, a lot was blown out of Texas at No. 14; 7-0 center Duane Causwell of Temple with the 18th pick; and forward Anthony Bonner of St. Louis at No.

20. The seventh pick was the Kings own after they finished with a 23-59 record this season. The other picks were acquired in trades with Dallas and Utah. The Mavericks sent the 14th and 18th picks to the Kings in a deal that brought Rodney McCray to Dallas. After Simmons, three more players slated to play guard in the NBA were chosen.

Bo Kimble, the nations leading scorer at Loyola Marymount with a 35.3 average, was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers, who can use him as insurance while Ron Harper recovers from an injured knee. Willie Burton, a 6-7 forward in college, then was grabbed by Miami, which acquired the ninth and 15th pick from Denver in exchange for the No. 3 selection. Atlanta, which had switched first-round picks with Golden State earlier in the day, then took Michigan point guard Rumeal Robinson. Robinson was the first of three Michigan players taken in the first round matching the most ever Derrick Coleman of Syracuse (right) proudly displays the New Jersey Nets' jacket he will be wearing this fall with Nets' owner Jerry Cohen (left) and NBA commissioner David Stern.

Coleman said he expects to be a starter. Payton was thrilled to be taken by the SuperSon-ics. I wanted to stay on the West Coast and help Seattle out, he said. They needed a leader and 1 think they got one. They have so many premier players who can score.

I think I can get them the ball. Jackson and Gill, however, were not as happy. Dn Oaklands Steve Howard makes it back to the man Dave Bergman on a pickoff attempt in the bag while avoiding the glove of Detroit first base second inning. Whife Sox Dd We stf As Canseco highest paid in baseball OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) ItS a good thing theres not a salary cap for the Oakland Athletics.

Salaries, escalating each time a superstar negotiates a new deal, reached new heights on Wednesday when Jose Canseco became baseballs highest paid player. The As slugger agreed to a 5-year deal worth $23.5 million, moving him ahead of the Yankees Don Mattingly, who in April signed a 5-year, $19.6 million deal. Not even Canseco believes hes worth the money. I dont think its what Im worth, Canseco said at Wednesdays news conference. Its what the market holds, what the organizations are willing to pay a player.

The popularity I have, whether its controversial or positive, people want to come out and see Jose Canseco play. And the As, shooting for a third straight trip to the World Series, are paying the price. Canseco, who will be paid $5.1 million in 1995, the final year of his new deal, also becomes baseballs first $5-million man. The 25-year-old Canseco will collect a $3.5 million signing bonus, $2.8 million in 1991, $3.6 million in 1992, $4.1 million in 1993, and $4.4 million in 1994. He will earn $2 million in salary for this season.

There are incentives, too. If Canseco is named the ALs MVP, hell collect $100,000. An MVP in the playoffs and World Series is each worth another $50,000. Canseco becomes the fourth As player under contract making more than $3 million a year. Pitchers Dave Stewart and Dennis Eckersley and outfielder Rickey Henderson had already, reached that salary plateau.

I think the main thing that dictated the figure was the market, Canseco said. The market was going up. There are two other players who are close to the $4 million mark. The bare facts are what Ive done during the years, what I represent to the As and for the As and als6 the community. Thats where we came up wih the sum.

Oakland general manager Sandy Alderson said signing Canseco was. necessary if the team was sincere about retaining the competitiveness and identity of the Oakland As into the 1990s. Francis on Lewis' list Former Canadian track coach Charlie Francis has been added to the list of people being sued by Carl Lewis for what the six-time Olympic gold medalist alleges was Francis part in a million-dollar conspiracy to defame him. Lewis began his libel action of nearly $364 million in December against the German magazine Stern and sprinter Darrell Robinson, a former teammate of Lewis, who now lives in Canada. But an amended statement of claim, filed this month at the Supreme Court of Ontario, added Francis name, along with more representatives of Stern, to the suit.

The statement claims there was a conspiracy which created a $1.2 million slush fund for the purpose of buying perjured testimony. Nebraska in the Big 10? Nebraska Athletic Director Bob Devaney sent out a feeler to the Big Ten Conference last week after reports that Oklahoma would consider an offer to leave the Big Eight for the Southwest Conference. But OU and NU officials say the Sooners arent likely to move, and Devaney says the Huskers aren't, either. Even if they were, they would have to wait out the Big Tens four-year moratorium on further expansion talks. I cant see it unless it's a desperation move, Devaney said.

I cant see why we would go into the Big Ten and do all that traveling. I dont think its something we ordinarily would seek at all. Now if the Big Eight Conference would go down the drain, we certainly would think about it. OU Athletic Director Donnie Duncan has said the Sooners would listen if the Southwest Conference offered them Arkansas spot in the league. The Razorbacks are thinking about jumping to the Southeastern Conference.

Memphis gets WLAF franchise The World League of American Football has approved a franchise for Memphis a city that has sought a NFL team for 20 years. Frederick W. Smith, president of Memphis-based Federal Express is considering buying the franchise for an estimated $11 million. A formal announcement about the franchise could come within a few days. Mayor Dick Hackett said Tuesday.

However, Mike Lynn, vice chairman of the new league, confirmed that Memphis would be in the league. Lynn also is executive vice president and general manager of the Minnesota Vikings and is a former Memphian who sought an NFL expansion team. The WLAF is a league designed to develop players for the NFL. It is to begin play next March under a 10-game schedule with five home games for each team Seven of the 12 franchises have been approved Birmingham, Orlando, San Antonio, Texas; Sacramento, Montreal, Barcelona, Spain and Frankfurt, West Germany. Other potential WLAF cities include New York, Mexico City and some European cities.

Cal Ripkens errorless streak is not over, after all. Official scorer Billy Stetka, who charged Ripken with an error Tuesday when the Baltimore Oriole shortstop apparently muffed a cutoff throw from center fielder Mike Devereaux, reversed his own call early Wednesday. After viewing the videotape and talking with a few players and coaches, Stetka decided to give Devereaux a throwing error on the play. As a result, Ripkens revived errorless streak was at 68 straight games entering Wednesday nights game against Cleveland. Thanks to Stetkas ruling, Ripken is still alive in his pursuit of Eddie Brinkmans 18-year-old American League record of 72 consecutive errorless games by a shortstop.

Castaldo singled up the Middle to bring Carter home. Coble then hit a shot to the second baseman and as the Blue Jays were trying to turn the double play another error cost them as they recorded no outs on the play. Todd Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to score Coble from third and Gordon Powell followed with his first home run of the season, a shot that cleared the scoreboard. The Brewers held in the last of double.
