TOMMY HOLMES 1 Williams Again Is The Man to Watch Branca Seems Sure 20-Game Winner zz 1 Ov! Ralph, One of Five Dodger All-Star Choices, Has 12-6 Record, Four-Game Victory Streak By HAROLD C. BIRR Staff Correspondent of the tagle' a jr 1 Vtt' Chicago, July 7 THRILL PRODUCER Some doubt exists among base-, ball's serious thinkers as to whether the annual major league All-Star game is of any particular scientific value. Chicago, July 7 Ralph Branca and four of his Dodger teammates are here to do what they can toward winning tomorrow's All-Star game at Wrlgley Field for the National League. The big righthander's brief farewell to Flatbush yesterday at Ebbets Field was a goodly sight in the eyes of the 26.363 fans. Dodger pitching being what it is, it's 4 imperative that he hurry back to stand shoulder-to-shoulder again with Harry Taylor the two stalwarts of the staff.

Branca pitched the Dodgers back into first place by his 4-to-0, three-hit shut-out the Braves, who tumbled out of the driver's seat into the quagmire that a mld-! game storm made or the park. Unless he stubs his toe-plate, Branca should easily be By WILLIAM F. The With Injured Digit choice in the fan voting for the Yanks won their seventh and Nap Rucker, Ed Pfeffer, Dutch Reuther, Watson Clark and Luke Hamlin have been the other immortals, with Van Lingle Mungo vainly knocking at the door several limes. But the fact that the 13 "dream games" held since Arch Ward promoted the first In this very town have produced beaucoup thrills is unquestioned. That goes for the one back in 1933 when the eminent Babe Ruth, then in the purple twilight of his slugging career, hit his last home run in interleague competition down to last July when Ted Williams staged that Wild West show up in Fenway Park, Boston. Mr.

Williams really poured it on a year ago. He had four official trips to the plate. He got four hits. Two of them were singles. The other two were home runs.

The first of his four masters was a towering fly off our old friend, Kirby Higbe. The second was delivered on a 4 "blooper" pitch thrown by Rip Sewell of the Pirates. BASHING THE BLOOPER You must have seen Mr. Sewell throw his The sandy-haired Pittsburgh veteran leans backward and disdainfully arches the ball lip into the ambient. It seems that the thing takes a week to reach the plate and you could drive a large load of hay beneath its arc.

It was Sewell's proud boast that no batter had ever belted his pet pitch out of the park and it was easy to see how this could be thus. Hitting the blooper is some-thing like hitting an empty tin can. Any distance obtained on such a delivery was obtained by whatever power the batter himself could supply. Anyway. Theodore Williams, on this occasion, managed to control his magnificent impatience until Rip's beanbag descended within range of his bat.

Then Ted unloaded. In the language of the dugouts, he really "creamed" the ball. It landed in the right field bleachers. Everyone got a kick out of that. Everyone, including Sewell, who all but ran over to shake hands with Williams as the kid circled the basepath.

SYMPATHY Ted's heavy cannonading led to a 12 to 0 American League victory. That was the most lopsided All-Star score of all time and everyone immediately began feeling sorry for whatever National League team earned the right to be "massacred" by the Red Sox in the World Series. As it turned out, the Cardinals faced 'the bashing beaneaters and, by this time, I guess you know who perpetrated the massacre. It is my guess that Mr. Williams will be the central figure of tomorrow's All-Star game or, at least, the character whose activities will be watched with the most Interest.

There are several reasons for this thought. First, All-Star competition seems to have brought out the best in Williams. That was Ted's top show last Summer but he was by no means a slouch at Detroit in 1942. That year the National League led by 5 to 4 with two on and two out in the ninth. Here Williams came to the plate.

Claude Passeau threw one and Ted hit it up against the roof in right field. SOX NEED LIFT The follow-up thought is that Williams better had get going pretty soon if he is to do the Red Sox much good in 1947 A. D. Come to think of it, Ted had done comparatively little sparkling since the All-Star event last year. It was just about that time that Lou Boudreau of the Cleveland Indians instituted the famed anti-Williams shift.

News of this maneuvre hadn't got around to the National League in time for that loop to use it in the All-Star game but, by the time the World Series rolled eighth straight game to tie the Chicago. July 7 Bob Elliott, first American League mark for thelchoice for the National League's sea.Mn held hv the Red So aslth'rd baseman in the AU-Star Parker Retains Clay Court Title game, didn come here fromHolmea Got First Hit climb in the middleweight class he left an almost perfect record of victories. This isn't to say that the trouble with the Red Sox is all Williams. But the ups and downs of a ball player of this calibre have a direct effect on the club. THE FLYING YANKS Joe DiMaggio and the Yankees furnish a perfect example of that. Everyone knew that the Yanks were pretty good but it was impossible to properly evaluate' their chances In the pennant race because of the doubtful condition of DiMagglo's wounded heel. Bear in mind that back in March, no one could be sure that Joe could play at all.
