D8 Rapid City Journal Sunday, March 21, 1993 HowToSav Alt lived life of service SA Family Foriun Alt was a member of the Methodist Church in Faith, The title of the talk was "Which Way are We Going in 1952." The text began, "Choose you this day whom ye will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord;" Joshua 24:15. "This text reminds us of another choice that had an important effect on the history of our country. When our colonies were still under the domination of the English crown, a young man stood up in the Legislature of Virginia.

People didn't pay much attention to him at first, but he said things that shocked the members and made them very angry. After recounting the injustices done to the colonies by the English government, he tions, to waste our manpower and resources in a dangerous armaments race, to keep up a hot or cold war that may destroy our entire civilization?" "George Washington warned us against the dangers of entangling foreign alliances. Thomas Jefferson declared that government is best which governs least. Andrew Jackson warned against the pitfalls of charity and fairness toward a defeated foe. Jesus warned us against the futility of trying to settle our differences by physical force, when he sternly rebuked Peter by saying, 'put up thy sword, for they that take up the sword shall perish by the "These are the things to think about in 1952." The above materials taken from the speech, and writing of George Alt, as published in the congressional in 1952.

George Alt lived a life of service to his fellow men. He lived a life of service to his God. Whatever he did in life, his belief in a great power from his God was always a consideration and the first consideration. He lived as near a perfect life as anyone I have known during my lifetime. Wouldn't it be a wonderful life if we could have followed the teaching of the Bible and the constitution as did George Alt? He set the example for all that knew him to follow.

Material for this article taken from letters and friends of George Alt, from the book "Faith Country," and from the congressional record, published at the request of Francis Case in 1952. Georsi Mates Is a local businessman who writes about the history of this area. wrong with accumulating money, provided it comes in return for valuable services rendered to the public. "The love of money, the desire for wealth, probably leads more men astray than any other material god. It creates the racketeer, the pickpocket, the hold-up man, the grafter and the embezzler.

The inordinate love of money often blinds us to the abundant life that Jesus came to give to all. But it is wrong to desire the comforts and satisfactions of physical life? Certainly if they occupy the proper place. It is only when they become the chief aim to life, when we allow them to dominate our thoughts and control our action that they become a menace to our spiritual development. "Which way are we going in 1952? Are we going to put our faith in material things that grow old and pass away? Or are we going to seek spiritual values that are eternal and never pass away? "Which way are we going in 1952? Our country was founded on the principles of liberty, justice and fair dealing, on the proposition that all men are born free and equal. How closely are we living up to these lofty principles? When we read about graft and corruption in high places, income-tax frauds, mink coats and deep freezers given to government officials in return for special favors, is that what we call justice? "Are we as a nation practicing a policy of friendly neutrality and extending the hand of real friendship and cooperation to our neighbors across the sea, or are we trying tc dominate the minds of men, to divide the world into two quarrelsome fac George Alt built a sod house in Faith country.

He used to walk to Philip for his supplies, a distance of 00 miles. If it was possible to catch a freight wagon, he paid $1.50 for the ride Otherwise he walked all the distance and back, currying his purchase on his back. he trip would take two days. It is safe to say that when anything needed doing it was a certainty that the words would be, "Let George do it." He was a pioneer in Faith country. He taught school and was the cook at the Roundup Cafe in 1910.

The cafe was open 2-1 hours a day. The railroad held a land sale on July 4 of that year and that was the reason to keep the cafe open day and night. Alt served two terms in the Legislature. He was a member of the school board from 1938 to 1951. He was treasurer of the school district from 1951 to 19(54, treasurer of the hospital board and a member of that board 1951 to 1964, city assessor for eight years, superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School and treasurer of the Methodist church each for 16 years, and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for eight years.

He married Esther Babcock and they had one child, a daughter, Mable. The phrase, "let George do it," was coined and applied to George Alt without question. On Feb. 6, 1952, Francis Case allowed a treatise to be placed in the congressional record appendix, which was prepared as a talk by George Alt. The pails of the speech I remember were so impressive that 1 read them several times.

They actually concerned the religion of George Alt and his interest in his faith as a Christian. George The entire family can get great haircuts from professional stylists at everyday low prices.
