Indeed, for many opponents, it is the unexpected that makes Elway so feared. They figure he's least dangerous in the pocket running a routine play. But let him draw a play in the dirt, or get out on the flanks and direct traffic as if in a sandlot game, and look out! The Oilers, of course, have noticed. "He likes to play that street ball See Redskins on page C8 By The Associated Press DENVER Recent playoff appearances have seen the Denver Broncos accumulate such totals as 38, 37 and 34 points.

John Elway isn't counting on that to continue, though. Denver hasn't scored 30 points in a game since the season opener against Cincinnati. Even though Elway remains capable of jaw-dropping plays, this Bronco team is dominated by defense. "I don't anticipate us going out and scoring 30 points," Elway said as the Broncos wound up preparations for today's divisional playoff 5,5211 cEneeir Thrillers' 8tifo straight home wm going through that 5-11 season, but in the long run I think it's made me a better quarterback." But the Thrillers edged back in the second quarter, 29-21, for a 56-52 halftime lead. "We came out in the first half and played exceptional defense, especially in that second period," Basnight said. "We just had momentum from that point on." The Thrillers forced 10 Bandit turnovers and nabbed eight steals in the first half.

They finished the contest with 15 steals and forced the Bandits into 19 miscues. Add to that, the Thrillers as a team finished the game with 29 assists, 18 the product of Craig Neal's seeing-eye passes, as Rapid City took a decisive edge in both offensive and defensive categories. He was the second round pick of the Golden State Warriors in 1990-91, and at one stretch last year, was 33 of 31 from the line. The Thrillers coaching staff said it expected Pritchard to be drafted between the first and fifth round of the dispersal draft. "Kevin is an excellent basketball player. He can play both point guard and off guard, but once again, we might not see him until next season," Musselman said. "At this time, we are not looking to bring in any players.

We're happy with the 10 guys we have on our team right now. This is part of the reason we drafted NBA players and not players looking to play for us right now." The 25-point win for the Thrillers, highlighted by a 6:34 stretch in the fourth period where they held the Bandits scoreless, gives them a 13-9 record. And the six quarter points garnered improves their quarter-point total to 91. Seven Rapid City players broke into double-digits led by Keith Smart's 24 points and Jarvis Basnight's 20. Nate Johnston and Larry Robinson, six coming on 2-for-3 three-point shooting, added 16 points each. Nikita Wilson followed with 12, newcomer Perry McDonald had 11, and Irving Thomas 10.

Birmingham falls to 11-14 with 8 1 '2 points. The Bandits were paced by Jim Farmer's 19 points. Richard HoIIis and Dave Popson had 13 points apiece with Eugene McDowell Thrillers After three days of litigation, Rapid City has picked up the rights to former Bakersfield Jammers Tod Murphy and Kevin Pritchard. The Bakersfield franchise of the Continental Basketball Association folded on Dec. 31, leaving its players and their rights entangled in a dispersal draft.

The Thrillers chose the rights to the Minnesota Timberwolves' Murphy and the Boston Celtics' Pritchard. Murphy, a 6-foot-10 center out of UC-Irvine, is a three-year NBA veteran. He played for the CBA's Albany Patroons under Bill Musselman in 1987-88. Murphy played in 22 games for the Timberwolves, shooting 50 percent from the floor, before being placed on injured reserve on Thursday. "Tod proved he can play in the NBA, however, due to changes in Timberwolves personnel, Tod could be the odd-man-out next season.

Right now he's in the last year of his guaranteed contract," said Thrillers coach Eric Musselman. Musselman said he was pleased to obtain the rights of two outstanding players, even though the Thrillers drafted 12th among 16 teams. Pritchard, a 6-3 guard who started for the 1988 Kansas NCAA champs, appeared in 11 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 80 percent from the line for 4 2 points per game.
