ft BROOKLYN EAGLE, WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 3, 1941 HYMIE TO RETIRE AS JOB IS ENDED BY REFORM LAW I isssfti I i iinr in mn i ma i aa at K7 ia arm i a- iih a riwi 1 Mayor Signs Bill, So Boro Records Chief Will Quit Public Life Commissioner of Records Hyman Schorensteln, who came to this country 60 years ago when he was 10 and became a leader in Brownsville Democratic politics, beat Mayor LaGuardia to the punch today in a way. The Mayor signed a bill yesterday abolishing next Dec. 31 the office of Commissioner of Records in Kings and New York Counties with the sarcastic remark thai the borough commissioner could get a Job at "one of the great colleges" where he could get "a chair in literature to utilize his mental attainments in the public Interest." Won't Seek Office Again Mr. Schorensteln told the Brooklyn Eagle today that he would retire after the first of the new year and never aspire to public office again "although I will still continue to wora for the Democratic party." Mr.

Schorensteln said he had "no kick" about the bill which throws him out of a Job. "It was a Democratic bill passed by a Democratic City Council," said Mr. Schorensteln. The bill provides that all employes in the offices of Mr. Schor-enstein and A. Welles Stump, New York County Commissioner of Records, who are in the competitive or labor class of civil service, be retained at their present rank and salary, Employes in the unclassified civil service or in the non-competitive or exempt class may be retained only if the respective County Clerks certify that they are needed and if their retention Is approved by the Board of Estimate. Before he signed the bill, which marked the first milestone in county reform in the city, the Mayor was urged by George H. Hallett secretary of the Citizens Union, to veto it lest unnecessary employes be kept on the payroll.

The Mayor disagreed with him. The Mayor will hold a hearing at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow at Summer City Hall on bills to abolish the offices of the five county offices of sheriff and the four county offices of register, the main objective of county reform. 2-K ii i Lanifley Collyer is a scarecrow of a man right out of something by Edgar Allan Poe. He prowls upper 5th Ave.

only after midnight. His tattered clothing hangs together by the grace of safety pins, his Jace is bristly and he shuffles his strange way through life like the Incarnation of the army of the poor and beaten. But there is a difference, Langley Collyer is entitled to suffix his name with LL.B., LL.M. His family stretches its illustrious way back to the Mayflower, I-angley Collyer is rich enough to refuse to talk even to a real estate man who stood outside his shabby brownstone house for days creaming an offer of $125,000 for a piece of Collyer property. There Is no telephon In the Collyer house, No electric light.

No gas. No heat. But there are ten grand pianos, a number of other musical Instruments and a vast library. Among this odd collection you wouldn't be surprised to find a Ford automobile. And there Is a Ford automobile in the place.

Langley carried it into the cellar piecemeal for a reason he will not disclose. And there Is, somewhere on an upper story, Collyer's blind brother, Homer. The Collyera went into hermitage more than ten years ago, Since then no one has seen Homer at all. Langley emerges infrequently. One night he became annoyed when neighbors from a nearby house tried to keep in on his solitude.

He bought the neighboring house for $7,500 cash. He refused to let firemen see Homer during a ie-cent small fire. Shopkeepers who closed their stores early that' day flocked to the old mansion in hope of satisfying their consuming curiosity, but were disappointed. langley sometimes will stop to speak to visitors. He told us in a cultured voire that he didn't think it was time to sell property.

He shook his head when he was asked whether the death of his parents hocked him into becoming a recluse. And he shrugged at tbe stories the neighbors tell that he spends part of the long nights passing a lantern in front of Homer's eyes In an effort to help him see again. Most folks say Langley Is a bit touched. But Langley takes the papers home and reads the forboding headlines. He thinks most folks are touched.

We wonder who is right. Concerning two prodigies One of whom is nameless. The other Is Lorjn Maazel, the 11-year-old young man who conducts Philharmonic orchestras and floors prospective interviewers by discussing the "meditative and philosophical aspects of Beethoven and Wagner." Young Maazel wears short pants, skims lightly over polysyllables and is fond of referring to musicians as "my colleagues." You've seen pictures of him in the roU) sections with his blond, windblown bob. Lorin would like to play like other boys but he has lots of studying to do he assures listeners. He has conducted the N.

B. C. symphony orchestra and has performed as solo violinist with the Wisconsin Symphony. The other prodigy Is a 5-year-old "dark horse" for the Shirley Temple throne. He is an orphan discovered by Tallulah Bankhead nd brought to the attention of Johnny Hyde, the Hollywood star maker, by a subterfuge.

Knowing Hyed not to be too fond of children, actress Bankhead told him she had a contract problem and asked him to come to her apartment. What he found when he reached her house was a handsome boy who had the presence of an accomplished adult. He ordered Tallulah and the boy to play roles In a little play. Hyde was convinced quickly and the boy was placed tinder wraps. He is now being coached preparatory to an assault on the movie city.
