20 The Herald-News, Monday, February 9, 1970 Dolly iller Lacks Something as tf, ff 't response is delayed and, at its Broadway Beat By Hobe Morrison Herald-Neics Theater Critic 1 I Phyllis Diller is a funny woman and clearly deserves her position and reputation as a cabaret and television star. She's also probably an entertaining performer in a suitable stage vehicle. As with all actors and comics, however, she's limited by her material. "Hello, Dolly" was a spectacularly effective show for Carol Channing and Pearl Bai-ly, and good enough for Ginger Rogers, Betty Grable, Martha Raye and, according to reactions in London and 1 various American cities, Mary Martin. For Miss Diller, on the other hand, the long-run Broadway musical doesn't quite work.

Perhaps the trouble is that Miss Diller lacks the bravura personal projection that Miss Channing and Miss Bailey brought as the fabulous Dolly Gallagher Levi. That seems to Molloy, and Georgia Engel brings a delightfully subtle touch to the role of the pixie milliner's assistant, Minnie Fay. Danny Lockin is amusing as the second juvenile, Barna-by Tucker, Marcla Lewis plays the fat girl with broadly comic effect and Andrea Bell gets the requisite chuckes as the squalling Ermengarde. As most of the "Dolly" stars have done, Miss Diller does a sort of floor show bit after the curtain calls. Coming out on the runway, she clowns with the audience, makes the requisite number of self-deprecating jokes and, in a disarming bit, introduces the principal members of the company.

When it's all over, there's a feeling that she's perhaps the hardest-working of all the "Dolly" stars. There's even a sense of sympathy for a talented performer in a not quite appropriate vehicle. peak, lacks the almost hysterical enthusiasm that Miss Channing and Miss Bailey and even Miss Rogers and Miss Raye ignited. Aside from the new star, the present "Dolly" holds up admirably for a show that has just passed its sixth anniversary next1 to "My Fair Lady" and is the longest-run musical in Broadway annals. All of the supporting players are acceptable and several compare favorably with the originals.

In general, the quality of the production is a credit to the David Merrick management. Richard Deacon gives a good, workmanlike performance as the curmudgeon Horace Vandergelder, Bill Mulli-kin and June Helmers are outstanding as the secondary romantics, Cornelius Hackl and rjfn rvV be indicated by her greater impact in the more personal scenes, or when she can fall back on cabaret-style bits of clowning, such as her greatly expanded and laugh-getting dinner-eating bit just before the finale. In most of the numbers, however, the new star doesn't quite bring the performance "to life. The outstanding example is the" title song and choreographic scene, when the former idol of 14th Street descends the grand staircase of the Harmonia Gardens restaurant (obviously representing Luchow's) and sets off one of the memorable dance routines of Broadway history. That incredibly contagious song, with the superbly staged dancing by the waiters and the electrifying parading around the oval runway in front of the pit orchestra, still stirs the audience to a rare pitch of excitement.
