Slngl, Jersey Jets Play at Home Orf Saturday JERSEY CITY Off to an ausptcious start with a convinc-igg 41-14 victory over the Wilmington Clippers in their seasons opener last week, the Jersey Jets play their home opener Saturday night against the Virginia Sailors here at Roosevelt Stadium. If Coach Nipk Cutro and his Jets can come up with a repeat performance against the Sailors, they will definitely establish themselves as a top heavy favorite to win the ACFLs Southern Division crown for the second consecutive year. Virginia, one of the six new clubs in the circuit, is reputed to be a powerhouse as its overwhelming 49-14 exhibition win over the Harrisburg Capitols indicates. The Sailors, under the guidance of of Bill Cox, former Duke All-American and Washington Redskin, captured the North American League title last season. Since the addition of the eight players from the parent New York Jets, the Jersey Jets have looked impressive on offense and defense.

Against Wilmington the Jayjets racked up a total of 520 yards, 359 via the air. Coach Cutro was really pleased with quarterbeck John DeNoias passing performance. The former Lehigh signal caller completed 11 of 22 aerials for 366 yards and three touchdowns. John Vasilyk Gets Big White Marlin John D. NOW ONLY By BEN OLAN Associated Press Sports Writer They said Frank Emanuel was tough and hes turned out to be too tough even for Wahoo McDaniel, a successful professional wrestler when hes not playing pro football.

Emanuel, the All-America linebacker from Tennessee who got a reported $200,000 to sign with Miamis new American Football League team, has grappled with McDaniel, the former New York Jet, for the Dolphins middle linebacker spot. The 250-poimd, Tail-league fullback bulled hii way for 954 yards on 352 carries last season. But when -he arrived late for camp fall he said he would not play Denvers inferior bfand of footbaU. May Hamper Offense The loss of Gilchrist could severely handicap Denver, although head Coach Mac Speed-ie, in his second full year as head man of the Broncos, thinks differently.

Speedie believes Wendell Hayes, a rookie halfback, is an adequate replacement for Cookie. Despite Cookies withdrawal, Denvers main threat remains in the offensive backfield. Teaming with Hayes will be veterans Abner Haynes and Charlie Mitchell. However, Hayne is 28 and Mitchell is recovering from a leg injury which kept him out most of last season. If one or both are laid up, Denver is in trouble.

The pass receiving positions are strong with flanker Bob Scarpitto, who caught 32 passes for 585 ysu-ls, and ends Lionel Taylor and A1 Denson. Returning at quarterback are four year veterans Mickey Slaughter and John McCormick. Speedie says, Slaughter will be our No. 1 quarterback until he shows us he cant do the job. Line is Weak On the line, only rookie center Larry Kaminski from Purdue appears capable of playing steadily on offense.

Out indefinitely is all-league offensive tackle Eldon Danenhauer. Danenhauer broke his arm in blocking drill early in training. Defensively, Denvers top lineman is veteran tackle Ray Jacobs. Sophomore Max Leetz-ow and Howard Payne rookie Bob Young are expected to bold down the ends. Speedie is not happy' with his line.

He is attempting to swap Gilchrist for linemen. The Broncos are seeking a first-string offensive guard or tackle or a defensive tackle or end for Gilchrist. The defensive backfield is another weak unit. Aside from left comerback Willie Brown, the Broncos are in trouble. Last season.

Bronco opponents completed 45 per cent of their passes and scored 23 times through the air. Possibly veteran Goose Gonsoulin, sophomore Nemiah Wilson and rookies Bob Richardson from UCLA and Goldie Sellers from Grambling can correct the situation. McDaniel will move to the right side. Kicked Off Team Emanuel, a 225-pounder from Newport News, was kicked off Tennessees football team two years ago for getting involved in an off-campus alterca tion. He was later cleared of the incident, and followed this by joining the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and making talks to youth groups. The All-America climaxed an outstanding season in 1965 by being named Most Valuable Lineman after the Vols crushed Tulsa 27-6 in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Frank was tlje heartbeat of our defensive unit, said Doug Dickey, Tennessees coach.

He was truly a dedicated football player. He worked hard and improved his play tremendously during the season. The Dolphins outbid the Philadelphia Eagles of the National League for Emanuels services. He was the Eagles fourth draft choice. Buncom Signs While 1 Emanuel was winning his battle for a regular berth in the Dolphins camp at Boca' Raton, Frank Buncom, another linebacker, returned to the training quarters of the San Diego Chargers in Escondido, and signed his 1966 contract.

Buncom and Ron Mix, an allleague tackle, left camp Monday following a salary dispute. Mix is still unsigned. Meanwhile in the National League, the Washington Redskins traded defensive end John Paluck to the Chicago Bears for veteran defensive tackle Stan Jones and a future high draft choice. Green Bay and Atlanta also negotiated. The new Falcons acquired kicking specialist Larry Moore from the Packers for a future draft choice.

(UPI) Open champ Billy Casper loomed as a favorite today as the $100,000 Insurance City Open got under way at the Wethersfield Country Club. Casper won the ICO in 1963 and again last year. The veteran driver won two of the years three major endurance sports car races the Daytona 24-hour, when he teamed with Lloyd Ruby, and the Sebring 12-hour and missed winning the third at Le Mans, France, on a technicality. He was first at the end of the 24 hours, but was relegated to second because of unusual circumstances regarding starting positions of the first two finishers. Miles, who became Shelby-Americans chief test driver and team driver 1963, started racing motorcycles in England 28 years ago. Left England After spending seven years as a British army sergeant, Miles came to the United States in 1951 and became a naturalized citizen.

He lived in Hollywood, with his wife, Muriel, and two children. Fellow racing driver Dan Gurney summed up Miles career: Ken certainly earned the victories that had come to him the last couple of years after the exposure hed had iri thousands of miles of thd toughest kind of testing. RIVERSIDE, Calif (AP) -Veteran race car driver Ken Miles is dead after the violent crash of a Ford test car at Riverside Raceway. The 47-year-old driver, who had been enjoying his best season since he started racing in his native England in 1938, died instantly Wednesday from severe head injuries, a track official said. According to witnesses, the sports car he was driving plunged off a high bank near the final turn of the nine-turn course, rolled end-over-end and landed in the infield.

Miles was thrown from the car, which burst into flames and was totally destroyed. Officials estimated the ma chine, a prototype called the Formula car, approached the turn near the end of the mile-long back straight-away at 176 miles an hour. Held Track Record Tuesday, Miles broke Riversides lap record with a 1:26.4 clocking at an average speed of 108.33 m.p.h. in the same vehicle, which had never been entered in a race.
