2 Salinas Guardsmen Promoted to Lieutenants Two members of Salinas' national guard unit were commissioned second lieutenants during a ceremony at Camp Cooke Saturday, it was learned here today. They are Andrew E. Ausonio and Luther C. McElhaney. The 149th heavy tank battalion, part of the 49th infan try division, currently Is m Its7 second week of summer encampment at Cooke, World War II armored division training center southwest of Santa Maria. The battalion left here June 16 to join other units of the 49th division at camp for training and maneuvers. It is scheduled to return to Salinas this week-end. On Dec. 13, 1949, he was raised to sergeant. Lieutenant Ausonio joined the guard Dec. 11, 1948. He was promoted to private first class on Dec. 13, 1949, and made corporal June 1, 1950. Carll D. Brell, vice president of the big transport company, stated in a letter to the Salinas chamber of commerce that the company has contracted for maintenance services with Western Airlines at the Los Angeles International airport and will move there shortly. The company's officials had visited Salinas on several occa sions and had expressed satisfaction with the facilities at the airport. The company specializes in contract services to the Far East and since the start of the Korean war has served the U. .S. armed forces exclusively. In his letter to the chamber here, Mr. Brell stated: "I wish to express my sincere thanks for the full cooperation given Seaboard & Western in helping us in providing facilities in order that it. would be possible to move our operations to Salinas." Mr Brell stated that the "uncertainty of the military situation in the Pacific" had considerable influence on the company's decision to go to Los Angeles. Population May 31 was 11,644, the department said. This is the second consecutive month in which there has been a decrease. New commitments received during May were 280, almost the same number received in April. Parole violators returned to prison in May were 79, as compared to 63 during April. During May, 266 persons were released on parole and 106 inmates were discharged by expiration of sentence. Part of the decrease in the headquarters in the east, but operate from both coasts of the United States.
