New Jersey (107) By RON PHILLIPS HeralU-Xevvs Correspondent at the time of getting permission to shift his franchise. Youd certainly be getting a class guy, answered Lane, but I question whether you can get him to manage your club. Frank Lane confirmed that conversation Monday in Clear-, water, where he, Harry Dalton and other members of the Orioles family were in the middle -of an organizational-meeting wdth Hank Bauer and his coaches. Kennedy Named Finley named Bob Kennedy his new manager Friday but only a few hours before the announcement Kennedy said, I was just one of several people he told me he was interested in.

DiMaggio was Finlevs No. 1 interest. Theres little doubt Finley spoke to DiMaggio about managing next season before he named him executive vice president and theres equally little doubt Joe said no thanks to that first proposition. The memory of that December day in 1951 when DiMaggio retired as an active player wuth the Yankees still remains vivid. Each week the Rutgers coaching staff selects the two best players and dubs them offensive and defensive Monsters. Viotlo, a 5-foot-10, 200-pound offensive lineman, will share captains honors, with defensive end Scott Lewendon of Plainfield this week when Rutgers meets Columbia. Commenting on Vitolo, a senior, Coach John Bateman said: Every time you look at him you say he cant do the job, but he has played far better than we expected. He does a good job on runs, passes and punts snapped. Schneider, a sophomorer also named All-East tackle this week by the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, university officials said.

Thursday, the Americans have an away game with the Kentucky Colonels and return to the armory floor Saturday night against the Denver Rockets and ace Willie Murrell.

All of thetrouble started late in the game and Art Hey-man wound up being charged with a technical foul and everything let loose as both coaches charged at officials Jim Serafin and Harry Brooks Brooks called a deliberate foul on Charlie (Chico) Vaughn for charging into Anderson. He signaled two when all the arguing began among players on both teams. ABA rules state that on a deliberate foul, the player Jiit gets one shot. The team then also gains possession of the ball. When Heyman, the former Duke and ex-Knick performer came on shouting, Serafin the other official, charged him with a technical foul.

So instead of Anderson getting the foul shot first with the Amerks down, Charlie Williams canned the technical for Pittsburgh to make it 109- 106. Then Anderson sank his with 0:44 remaining. with his longest return 32. Even that frustrates him. Running back kickoffs is fine experience for running back kickoffs, he said.

But running plays from scrimmage is different, and thats the experience I need. Ive never returned kicks; at Michigan State there was always somebody else, to do that. Feels Confident I view myself as a running back, not as a kick return man. I feel confident that I can run from the line of scrimmage as well as dont doubt my ability1, in any area as far as running, blocking or catching the ball. Its just a matter of playing, thats all.

He says hes found no difference between college and pro football except, its much more competitive; you have to know quite a bit more and you have to be more skilled all around. Coach Vin Cazzetta of Pittsburg felt that the Jersey team played much better than when the two clubs clashed in an exhibition contest at the Paterson Armory two weeks ago. The Pipers also won that ball-game, 120-109. They looked much better and have come along tremendously. Anderson certainly looked great. New Jersey is as Quarterbacks Pro Headlines president.

The original announcement said Joe would take over most of the As administrative duties but don hold your breath waiting. No Trouble Expected Mr. Finley will cominucTto be the general manager, no matter what title he gives anyone else. says Lane. But I dont think DiMaggio will have any trouble with him.

Finley is a hero worshipper and he couldn't a better hero to worship than Joe DiMaggio, of whom Im very fond. Besides, if a crisis arises Finley will defer to DiMaggio, and Joe wont let Finley get in his hairJbecause he probably wont be around that much. When the news got around that DiMaggio had tied up with Finley, many of DiMags frends shook their heads. One of them may have summed up the situation best of all. He said rather sadly: Say it aint so, Joe! Bucknell Honors Passaic's' Hern Special to The Herald-News LEWISBURG, Pa.

George P. Hem of Passaic has honored here at a Bison Club breakfast as part of Homecoming Weekend at Bucknell University. Hern was presented with an engraved plaque in recognition of his regular and long-time attendance at the Bison Club affair. His closest competitor is Homer Jones, New Yorks split end who has scored nine touchdowns or 54 points. Jones is ninth among the pass receivers, but his 28.4 yard average and eight touchdowns are tops.

Charley Tay--lor of Washington has caught the most passes, 35. Pat Studstill of Detroit still leads the punters with a45.4 yard average. Donny Andcrsort of Green Bay has the best punt return, average, 13.7, and John Love of Washington has the best kickoff return average, 39 0 yards. Marv Woodson of Pittsburgh still has the most interceptions, five. er he had ever giv en thought to managing.

I have enough trouble trying to manage myself without trying to manage 25 others, he said. From what he says, he still feels the same way. As Finleys clj)cf executive now, DiMaggio inherits the job recently relinquished by Ed Lopat and once held by Frank Lane. Finley signed Lane to an eight-year contract in 1961 and after Baneserved only eight months, he went to court and won a release from his contract as well as a $113,000 settlement. Finley pays more attention Jo me now than when I worked for him quips the always colorful Lane.

I think hes making a helluva good move in getting Joe DiMaggio to work for him. Its a fine piece of window dressing for the Oakland club and Joe will help a lotta boys in spring training. Instead of going to camp with the Yankees, hell be with the As, thats all. Finley probably is paving DiMaggio somewhere between $40,000 and $50,000 as vice chances to move the Dallas Cowboys while Don Meredith is out of action. Mortons third scoring pass Sunday beat Pittsburgh.

This w'as no sudden brainstorm with Finley.

He had given the idea a great deal of thought. Joe DiMaggio managing Oakland sounded like a na- tural. Why not? DiMaggio always has been enormously popular around San Franciscos bay area where he grew up and still spends much of his time, and if he were to manage the new Oakland franchise, Finley reasoned, many people would come out to the ball park simply to see him. When Finley gets an idea, he likes to tell others about it. So about a month'ago.

he went to Frank Lane, who was once his general manager at Kansas City and now vs a trouble shooter for Baltimore, and asked his opinion. What would you think if I hired DiMaggio to manage for me in Oakland? Finley asked Lane approximately a month ago, providing some idea what he thought his chances were Backup Making By CK II USD Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) The backup quarterback who sits on the bench with the headphones and thinks how much better he could do is finally getting a chance this season. Kent Nix at Pittsburgh, Jim Hart at St. Louis, Gary Cuozzo at New Orleans. Daryle Lamo-nica at Oakland, Pete Beath-ard at Houston and Steve Tensi at Denver all are getting a chance to play after riding the bench behind No.

Sets Mark Traded to Pittsburgh, where he figured to be No, 2 to Full Nelsen, Nix was promoted to first string when Nelsons troublesome knee gave out again. The young man from Texas Christian set a Steeler record Sunday with 28 completions against Dallas.

Hart was supposed to tag along bchind; Charley Johnson at St. Louis. When Johnson was called into the Army, the Cards had to fall back on this untried rookie from Southern Hlinous whose only pro experience had been completing four of 11 passes in last years finale with Cleveland. Hart passed for four touchdowns Sunday against Philadelphia. When the New Orleans Saints traded their No.

Beathard chafed under the restraining rope at Kansas City where he was behind Lenny Dawson. So he was traded to Houston. Although he completed only three of 14 passes Sunday, one was for a touchdown in the 24-19 victory over Dawson and his, former mates.

Tensi, injured after he was traded to Denver by San Diego, threw for 234 yards Sunday in a losing effort against the Chargers. Zaslofsky also said: We were a little tight at first. We were 13-up, 71-58. You just to all rookies.

I think I would have been able to compete equally if I had been in camp, he says. When he got to camp, he found Dave Osborn, a fast, tough third-year back from North Dakota running on the first team. Osborn still is on the first team, and the Vikings top rusher this year, Now Jones frets about when he may get his chance. He insists he has lost none of hs confidence in his ability, and that he only needs the opportunity to prove himself. But Vikings Coach Bud Grant prefers to bring Clint along slowly, and also Teels Osborn is among the "NFLs best halfbacks.

It is really frustrating. Jones said Monday night. Id hoped that, if possible, I could play and perform well enough to be in contention for rookie of the year. You want to play, and there isnt any place to play. I dont think my performance would hurt the team.

If it then I wouldnt have any business being' in professional football. So far, Clinton1 has carried the ball five times for nine yards from scrimmage and returned 10 kickoffs 198 jkrds. Jago resigned his post Monday as coach and assistant manager of Fulham of the English First Division. Jago, 35, also had to resign his position as a staff coach the English Football Association.

Though the clubs policy Is not to disclose salaries, Jagb prbbably will earn about the same salary as his predecessor, Doug Millward. Jago played 11 years for Charleston in the English league. Upon his retirement coached the English Youth team the international matches. Gordon is a man I had in mind when I first went to Europe in early September and after having talked with other candidates I am even more convinced that he fits our plan for development said General Manager Clive Toye. Millward was released by the Bays despite finishing first in the Eastern Division the league.

For a young man with the driving desire which Jones possesses, the frustration is almost unbearable. His dream is to be rookie of the year in the National Football League this season, perhaps another Gale Sayers. His ambition was to be a regular NFL halfback in his first year. It is now a virtual certainty he will achieve neither, because he doesnt even get to play. First Choice Clinton Jones was on the Michigan State varsity for three years and an All-America can-( didate both his junior and senior seasons.

Last March, he was the MinnesolaVikings first draft choice among three first-round selections. He was the heir apparent to Tommy Masons halfback job when Mason was traded to the lxis Angeles Rams. But it hasnt worked out that way. For Jones, the picture began to blur when he got sick at the College All-Star training camp last summer and missed the scrimmage game with the Chicago Bears. That, some say, hampered him from being the All Stars top halfback against the NFL champion Green Bay Packers.
