THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOI3K OCTOBER 19. 19H6 67 oss crashes MILANO 1 i -j. if 1 4 lomecomiiL i' Holy Cr Araiy9s i S- i I Sr The Cadets responded immediately with their first 21-play drive, a run-and-grlnd behemoth that consumed 7:27 and was consummated by Crawford's 1-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal. But Holy Cross was able to put up Its last score before haltime. "Army is not quite as strong defensively as they were last year," observed Lockbaum, who was a defensive monster, containing the wishbone's sideline attack.

The Crusaders exposed Army's soft underbelly with two long passes to running backs a 19-yarder to Tom Kelieher and a 21-yarder to Lockbaum before Wiley found Lockbaum flying unaccompanied down the right sideline and completed a 38-yard bomb to the Army 6. Kelieher then finished the Job with a bulldozer touchdown over right tackle. Suffice it to say, this will be Holy Cross' last appearance as Army's homecoming opponent. TOPS OUT AT OVER 130 MPH! Home-eoming is for saps. Designed for sap opponents, that is. You appoint the biggest guppy on your schedule to be a tasty morse! for the alumni and parents who have come back to celebrate the alma mater. Fans go away happy, and donations flow into the athletic department. The United States Military Academy might have to dip into the federal budget to make up for this year, however.

Holy Cross was supposed to be a willing 1-AA victim, a treadmark on the Army road to success. But apparently that scenario didn't leak its way to greater Worcester. The Crusaders, in fact, were completely rude to their hosts, as they relied on a tenacious defense to shock Army, 17-14, and numb a throng of 40.884. The Cross remained undefeated in the process (6-0) and is likely to improve on its current seventh-place ranking in Division 1-AA. The final vision of this game saw Army quarterback Tory Crawford being sacked on a fourth-and-13 at the Holy Cross 17.

Critics will argue that Cadet coach Jim Young should have opted for the 34-yard field goal attempt and a tie. But, considering the efficiency of Army's kicking game on this day, the decision to i go for it was probably the safe move: the Cadets had already missed a field goal of 45 yards and I had a 28-yarder blocked. Nonetheless. Young's lew post-game words were penitent ones. "We probably should have gone for the field goal." he said, "but we had been having trouble on three ii I III II lit inn 1 1 ir iwiiininiiiniiMiiMMmMiMii, MMiiihanim IMWiw I iiiMimiif I i iiiiiim nn ii I it previous kicks.

Yes, we should have gone for the tie." But the Crusader defense remained the fitting hero of this contest, as the unit allowed 421 yards to the Army wishbone but surrendered only one touchdown; the Cadets' other score came on an interception return. "All I can say is that I'm proud of every member and coach of this team," said hoarse Holy Cross coacli Mark Duffner. "They were convinced they could play with this team." Army was coming off an impressive win at Tennessee and indubitably took the Crusaders lightly. Holv Cross jumped out to a 1 4-7 halftime lead on the accurate arm of quarterback Jeff Wiley (8 of 1 1 for 142 yards at intermission! and the all-around talent of Gordie Lockbaum (93 total yards at the half). The Crusaders were clinging to that lead with eight minutes left at their own 32 when Wiley fired a ball toward tight end Randy Pedro.

Cadet safety Chance Conner picked off the pass at midf'teld, eluded several tacklers and raced down the left sideline for the tying score. The West Point afternoon seemed to be saved. But Holy Cross took advantage of two Army pass interference calls to move the ball from Its 24 to the Cadet 38. In fact, errors was Army's downfall, as two fumbles and an Interception in the end zone short-circuited the attack. On that' final scoring drive, Loc kbaum added a crucial 10-yard run on first down, and when the drive stalled -at the 21.

place-kicker Billy Young entered the game. An earlier attempt had been sabotaged by a high snap, and the memory lingered. "I tried to put it out of my rnind," Young said. "I told myself I had to make this one, and I wasn't about to lose it for us." The kick flew through, and Holy Cross had regained the advantage. Army took over at Its own 20-yard line with 3:55 left and proceeded to mount an Implausible 21-play (12 runs).

63-yard drive. Twice the Cadets faced fourth-; and-1 and converted; the final challenge proved beyond their grasp, however, and Holy Cross ran out the clock. The Crusaders had jumped on top in the first quarter on Wiley's 8-yard touchdown pass to flanker Lee Hull at the 5:19 mark. But the biggest play of the 42-yard march occurred when naturally Lockbaum gained 6 yards on a Tourth-and 1 at the Army 33.
