Not a sound was echoed, but you could hear the ballplayers crying their hearts out. This, indeed, is a sorrowful ending to a fine basketball season. One game that should have gone the other way. But every club must take the good with the bad. And East Rutherford High School, as well as its young basketball coach Dick Vitale took it hard, even harder than the Wildcats cheerleaders and fans who had followed them all season.

South Brunswick won the NJSIAA Group I title by upsetting -East Rutherford 5049, in Convention Hall Saturday night as a crowd of 12,532 fans witnessed the one-point thriller. There were 14 outstanding basketball teams in Convention Hall between Friday and Saturday night, only seven of them could go home a winner. It was happy and it was sad. For seven clubs, including the Wildcats, Jiad to take as gentlemen. The other seven, of course, were yelling their lungs out.

Whichever way you look at it, the game of basketball is a game of breaks. The breaks this time around just didnt pan out for East Rutherford, which closed 21-5. Vitale, perhaps wanted to break out in tears like his players, as he talked to them in the locker room in the large arena, as he managed to calm them ddwn a bit. He said: We came one little basket away from being state champs Im ground of you. Well be back again.

Maybe not all of you will. But greater things are ahead for some of you who are headed for college. You battled the odds all year. I know it hurts to go out this way. But keep your heads up high.

Youve got to face the crowd when you lose, also. Its easy to have fans in victory, but you also have to have them with you when you lose, remarked the Wildcats coach. The ball just didnt bounce our way, he told members of the press during an interview following the close Simply Played Poorly It was our biggest game. We just played at our worst. Simply played poor basketball.

I cant take nothing away from South Brunswick. They were an excellent ballclub. The Wildcats basketball coach also told his players: East Rutherford is proud of you. East- Rutherford had the -ball for the final shot, called time out. With 10 seconds they took a shot from outside, instead of trying to work the ball underneath to either Les Cason or Bill Kesgen.

If the shot had worked, however, happy faces would have rejoiced. Instead, the rebound went to the Vikings and that was the game. South Brunswick put up a solid 1-2-2 and 2-1-2 zone defenses. This stopped the ball from getting into Cason. It was Roses driving layup, a foul shot by Bob Griggs and Baileys short jumper that gave the Vikings a 50-47 advantage.

The ball later went back-and-forth on a couple occasions. East Rutherford just couldnt capitalize. Had Several Chances Any high school boy who has not graduated and is a resident of Clifton is eligible to play. No more than two varsity letter winners from a single school may participate on the same team. Boys who are interested and will be in high school in September 1968 should contact the Recreation Department weekdays between 8:30 a.m.

Nothing could be done about it. Cason had four fouls and couldnt take a chance on fouling out or the cause would have been lost real early in the fourth period.

Big Les, however, played topnotch ball in the second half, rebounding nicely and blocking shots. The tension of playing in a big arena effected him in the first half. This plus plenty of tightness found the Wildcats off to a bad start. Just Couldnt Hit East Rutherford didnt sink 'its first basket of the game until the clock showed 1:44 remaining in the session. The goal was a jumper from the inside by Kesgen.

At this point. South Brunswick had built up a 7-2 edge. The period ended with the Vikings in front, 11-6. The half ended with South Brunswick taking an eight point advantage into the dressing room, 28-21. But the Wildcats got a good halftime talk.

East Rutherford fought back to trail by one point, 34-33, on a jumper by Cason with 2:52 left in the third stanza. The Bergen County cagers were on the short end, 39-37, as the final eight minutes remained. Vitaless club was knotted at 39-39 and 4545. The last time on Casons jump shot with 5:10 to go. E.

The Dons were ready for the occasion and outplayed Cathedral when the going got rough. Paul Feske, 6:7 center for the Gaels, made several mistakes including traveling violations and charging fouls that could have pu his team into the victory column in the late stages.

Ulrich and Obaggy kept the Dons ahead in the final 2:39 a foul shot and two charity tosses, respectively, for a 72-67 advantage, after a drive-in talented Boh Harcar had brought Cathedral within a bucket, 69-67. Jim Adams and Harcar then came right back to pull the Gaels within one point, 72-71, but Caruths foul toss and two (on a one-and-one) by Obbagy did the damage. The first half found excellent basketball played. Both teams worked the ball and got off some great shots. Bosco led, 18-17, after the first eight minutes.

It was knotted at 40-40 during intermission. The Dons went on top, 61-55, the final canto. Cathedral took 33 shots in the first half and made 18. The Bergen County parochial school sank 14 of 29. It was the overall performance of Caruth, Ulrich and McMackin that turned the trick as far as the shooting went.

Ulrich (six-of-12), McMackin (five-of-11) and Caruth (six-fpr-13) totaled 17 for 36 to get the Ironmen into the win column. Bosco made 25 of 55 field goals in the game. The Dons, winning their second state crown in four years, posted a 75-71 upset victory over Trenton Cathedral High School. He also missed another valuable opportunity, on a one-and-one situation, in the final 10 seconds.

Another oddity was the technical foul, the tourneys only one against a coach, was charged to Vitale in the second period. It was at 4:39. Rose made it and the Vkings at that point, held an 18-13 edge. Rose, 6:4, 192-pound senior, collected 22 points, while Bailey added 11. Kesgen tallied 14 and Cason 13.

Anytime a state championship is at stake good shooting games usually dont pop up. Too much tension seems to be involved. Shooting Was Off Both teams made 20 field goals in the title battle. But East Rutherford took 55 shots from the floor, two more than the Vikings. The foul line showed nothing great.

The victors sank 10 of 18. The Wildcats connected on only nine-for-18. But rebounding, however, proved to be a big difference. South Brunswick held the upper hand, 40-23, with 13 by Rose leading the way for the champs. Teammate Bailey garnered 10, while Kesgen had 11 for the Wildcats.
