38 THE BOSTON GLOBE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1986 Trade Collins? Steinberg guard George Colton, who made a strong run at' making the roster before being released last week, was worked out by the Indianapolis Colts but has not signed a contract. Speaking of free agents, ex-Pa-trlot tight end Derrick Ramsey has received Inquiries from the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins, but neither appears ready to sign him until after the final eutdown to the 45-player limit. Ramsey holds a guaranteed $315,000 contract with the Patri PATRIOTS NOTEBOOK i FOXBOROUGH New England Patriots player personnel director Dick, Steinberg read his morning USA Today yesterday, and it didn't make his day. In It was a story saying New England was interested in trading running back Tony Collins to the New York Giants for Joe Morris. rOr that the Giants were interested In trading Morris to the Patriots for Collins.

Either way, it was no way as far as Steinberg was concerned. SAILBOATS SUMMER SAILBOAT EXTRAVAGANZA! "Prior to this year, if we'd seen a player like that available, we damn sure could have upgraded our squad by getting him." That opinion apparently was not shared by the Patriots' com-padres around the NFL, however, and there were an assortment of reasons.

But first and foremost was the USFL Factor. "TQams have been granted two-week exemptions for the USFL players they signed," Steinberg said. "Those exemptions are up this week, and a lot of them will be activated. "Teams had to make room for them this weekend. They have to see these people play.

They're in a tight bind." So too is Williams, at least for the short term. In a bind of a different sort is running back Eric Jordan, who was among the players placed on Injured reserve yesterday. Jordan, a former USFL running back who has shown ability in his time wearing Patriot colors but not the ability to stay in the pink of health, is hobbled by a knotty hamstring that has reduced him to zero playing time over the past two weeks. A year ago, when he arrived. here, Jordan came with a broken jaw that kept him on Injured re serve the entire season.

But the situations are not even remotely analogous, according to Jordan, because last year he needed the rest while this summer he wants desperately to work. I don want to go through an other year on reserve," Jordan said. "Then it would be two years since I'd played. I don't plan on do ing that. I rather play here, but I know they'll have to waive me before they could bring me back, ots, so he will receive his full salary regardless of whether he signs with another team this season.

According to Steinberg, no intriguing names have come across the waiver wire, although he and pro personnel director Bill McPeak are assembling a list of available talent "for our disaster list," Steinberg said. "There have been guys (released) who would look pretty good In October or November when you have injuries." RON BORGKS waive ams and somebody might claim me. If that happens, it's an opportunity you can't pass up. Careers are short. You play for whoever gives you a chance.

"If they keep me on reserve the whole season, it would be harder on me than it was last year because I can play. Last season I'd already played all those (USFL) games. I had the broken jaw. I was tired. "I was happy 1 didn't have to play then.

But it would make me mad now because I know I'll be ready long before six weeks are up. I ran today, and it felt good, and the game (the exhibition finale against the Packers) isn't until Saturday. I guess they're just trying to be careful because I was a little hasty coming back last time. There's still a little knot there that we're waiting to work out. It could still pull.

Until the knot is gone, I'm out." Haste, in a sense, was a waste in Jordan's case. A healthy Jordan would find himself staring right at Robert Weathers' job because Weathers is out for eight weeks with a broken ankle and nose resulting from a car accident Sunday. At the time, Jordan thought he saw opportunity knocking, but 48 hours later, the door was closed and he was left waiting for his leg to heal. "This all caught me off guard," said Jordan, "because (running back coach) Bobby (Grier) came to me Sunday and said, 'Things, work themselves "1 didn't know what he was talking about. Then he told me about Robert's injury and he said he was OK.

Then he asked me if I could play Saturday. I said yes. It was my opportunity, although I still had a guilty feeling about it. "The next day, Raymond said they were putting me on IR. I didn't ask why.

I'm sure it wasn't a hastily made decision. But it's kind of wild. "Who knows what's going to happen now? If you worry about it, you drive yourself crazy." bled to get down to the 50-player Other, victims included Bruce Mathison, Buffalo's starting quarterback until Jim Kelly came along, and safety Mike Kozlowski. The best known was the 30-year-old Thurman, a 10-year veteran with the Dallas Cowboys who was the ringleader of the group known as "Thurman's ltll talked about it with anyone." Linebacker Steve Doig (bruised quad and foot contusion), wide receiver Ray McDonald (groin), linebacker Brian Ingram (knee) and tackle Art Plunkett (knee) joined running back Eric Jordan (hamstring) on injured reserve. That raises the Patriot total to 22 players on the Injured reserve list, a number that would constitute half a squad under NFL regulations.

But in recent years, he had been reduced to playing as a nickel back and had to give way to younger legs. King, 29, was the Raiders' starting halfback in the 1980 and 1981 seasons before the arrival of Marcus Allen in 1982 shuffled him to primarily reserve duties. King was one of the stars when the Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1981 Super Bowl. The Raiders also axed a five-year veteran who set an NFL single-season punt, return yardage record last year, returning 62 kicks for 692 yards (an 1 1 .2 average). Mathison, a reserve during his college career at Nebraska, spent two years at San Diego, then last year at Buffalo, where he started seven games, completing 113 of 228 passes for 1,635 yards and 4 touchdowns.
