SERMON TOPICS The Sisters of Charity are withdrawing from St. Mary's Hospital after 58 years of efficient service at the institution to the sick and especially to the sick poor of this borough. Arrangements have been made for the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph to take charge of the hospital. This community was founded In Trenton.

N. In 1896, by Mother Mary Colette Hilbert. It was affiliated with the world wide Franciscan family by the Very Rev. Hyancinth Fudzlnski, Provincial of the Franciscan Fathers, Minor Conventuals. Its foundation was approved in the same year by Pope Leo XIII.

Two years later, at the invitation of the then Bishop Quigley, the sisters opened their second mission, in the diocese of Buffalo. Adjoining it, they erected a motherhouse and novitiate. During the next 30 years, the society grew to such an extent that it was necessary to provide larger faculties for the community headquarters. A large tract of land was purchased at Hamburg, about 10 miles south of Buffalo. Forty Hours Devotion will begin tomorrow in the church of St.

Christopher, Baldwin; Cure of Ars, Merrick; St. Fortunata, Dumont To Dedicate New Flagpole The new flagpole at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 4th Ave. and Pacific which Is a part of the recent renovation of the church building, will be dedicated tomorrow at noon following the morning service. District Attorney O'Dwyer will be guest speaker after the rector, Dr. Thomas J.

Lacey, conducts the dedication service. Comrade Post, V. F. will complete the program by conducting the flag raising ceremony. At the morning service the famous peace hymn by Tom Nook will be sung as an anthem.

The congregation will march out of the church at the close of the service to take part in the dedication program. In the evening Suffragan Bishop John I. Blair Larned will dedicate the new lights in the church. Clergy of the Archdeaconry of Brooklyn have been invited to Join the procession at this service. The church will be in darkness until the Bishop reaches the altar, when the new lights will be turned on.

Annual Baptist Meeting The Long Island Baptist Association will hold its annual meeting at the Baptist Temple, Third Ave. and Schermerhorn St. on Oct, 15, 16, and 17. Officers will be elected and other business transacted. Radio graphs.

We divided the work into 13 departments, covering every phase of Jewish life from the time of Abraham to the. present. All historical societies, libraries and museums in America have been of invaluable assistance. We have 512 illustrations In Volume 2 alone, with many reproductions In color of historic Jewish documents. "Our material by writers of unquestioned ability covers both history and articles presenting both sides of controversial questions.

It is the business of an encyclopedia to give authentic Information, not opinions of the editors. But we have added interpretations that will aid the reader to form his own judgments. Fourfold Value "We believe that the value of our encyclopedia is fourfold. To the Jews It will give an authentic and complete account of every phase of their history in all countries of the world, the first work of its kind in 40 years. More has happened to the Jews of the world in the past decade than in the last 1500 years.

Christians can get correct information of the history, ideals and achievements of the Jews, most essential in these days of misunderstanding and accusations rife in the world. The literary quality of material will appeal to scholars and as history our encyclopedia can serve as an authentic guide to students. All the articles contain some direct connection with Jewish life or history. Our writers Include Jews and non Jews, specially those who have contributed to the welfare of Jews, but reference is also made to those who have made life miserable for the Jews by opposition or persecution. "My present hope is that our encyclopedia may find a place on the shelves of every library In the U.

S. A. I am convinced that it will have an immeasurable effect on a better inter faith understanding among Americans. Greater knowledge will surely engender better understanding and better understanding will eventually destroy prejudice." Methodist HANSON PLACE CENTRAL CHURCH Opposite L. I.

So Rabbi Isaac Landman of Eight Ave. Temple, editor in chief of the newly issued Jewish Encyclopedia, was corralled in his study with questions on how such a project was conceived, and how it was accomplished. The second volume is just out and ihe remaining eight are expected to appear at approximately three month intervals. The present volume has a long section on Brooklyn, written by Rabbi Israel Levtnthal of the Brooklyn Jewish Center and a special article on Dr.

Parkes Cad man written by Rabbi Landman as a tribute to one who always cham i pioned the cause of the Jew and worked unceasingly lor a better interracial understanding and against racial prejudice. i Conceived in 1919 Rabbi Landman grows reminis I cent when you ask how and when this great project was first conceived. "In 1919 at the Peace Conference in Paris," said the rabbi, "I appeared as secretary of a commission from the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and Central Conference of American Rabbis. I was to offer no less a plan than the Introduction of a universal religious liberty clause in the League of Nations Covenant. Of course we did not win that, but I did get the idea that many of those present were out to grab all they could for their own countries or organizations and not to make peace.

On my return to America I told of the misapprehension that existed about Jews and warned that any conces isions that might be granted to Jews would not be of permanent value. I also insisted that we needed a complete encyclopedia that would give in concise and adequate form authentic information on all phases of Jewish life and history. So this great project was born but it took until 1928 to get a real start. "Then I resigned as leader of the Far Rockaway Congregation to give full time to the encyclopedia and accepted the job of editor in chief. The depression halted our progress, but the edfcors assisting me, both Jews and'TiJn Jews, became so enthusiastic that we all kept working without remuneration.

In fact, although the encyclopedia has cost $500,000 to compile, and the writers numbering over 600 were paid for their services through contributions of the editors and other friends of the project, the editors themselves, including myself, have received no remuneration. Now that funds have been obtained for publication, from the American Jewish Committee and the Altraan Foundation, we Christian Science BROOKLYN BRANCHES OF THE MOTHER CHURCH The First church of Christ, Scientist, In Boston, Mass.
