He progressed with his playing until the late Walter Henry Roth-well, then conductor of the Las Angeles Philharmonic, heard him and took the child under hLs wing. On Rothwell's advice the Rachlin family decided to go to Europe for further study for Ezra. A crowded fare- well recital In Los Angeles, the gathering together of their meager means, and the Rachlins were off to Berlin, where they settled down and the young artist was placed under the tutelage of Montz Mayer-Mahr.

His progress was so rapid that after a Berlin debut recital in 1027, Ezra received numerous offers for con cert tours and moving pictures, but only undertook a short tour of Ger-many. The following year another Berlin recital, the wi.se refusal of contracts by liis parents, and they returned to the United States. Came another sensationally successful debut, this time in Carnegie Hall. New York, followed by more offers of contracts. But again his mother and father decided on a continuation of his musical education.

He played for Josef Hofmann, head of the Curtis Institute of Music, and was immediately awarded a scholarship at that institution. Four years ot ail-absorbing conservatory life followed, during which time he played but little in public. Then one day Ezra heard that Leopold Sto-Kowski, conductor of the Piiiladel- phia Orchestra, was inaugurating a new senes of "Youth Concerts," that I hearings had been proceeding for two months and that the prize to; the winner would be an appearance an soloist wim me orcnesira. lie i promptly entered the finals and was selected trom fi 000 contestants.
