Resort Is Militarized, Streamlined and Packed For 'Polo' Gold' With Most Attractive Rides From World's Fair By JO RAN SON Coney Island, like a lovesick maiden, la preening herself for the arrival of dough-spending sailors, soldiers, marines and national defense workers. He was gi)vng Jimmy Stewart a hance to add singing to his cute gawklness. In order to provide the proper type of amusements for the uniformed lads practically all game, ride and penny arcade operators have gone military In Jumbo fash-ion. They have created newfangled machines guaranteed to Improve one's markmanship almost Immediately; rides are streamlined and Spitfire-appearing. Parachute Jump From Fair The World's Fair In Flushing Meadows was raided for money -mr king devices by Coney's shrewd operators and thus this season's visitors to the strand will find themselves dropping to earth from the mighty towers of the Parachute Jump on the boardwalk side of Steeplechase Park. At 40 cents a throw the Parachute Jump grossed more than $139,000 during the 1940 season at the Fair, which 'made it Horace Heidt's music was fitting neatly into the script, while Paul-ette Goddard was making the girl In the cue a fetching young thing. But; along came a fairy-tale scene with Paulette dreaming her way into a glistening bit of costume, prancing along a fabulous stage and generally switching "Pot o' Ooldo' Gold" over to the silver standard.

The co-feature, "Sis Hopkins," with Judy Canova in the title role, and Bob Crosby and his band, Charles Butterworth and Jerry Colon na in the supporting cast, will also remain, between Laraine Day and Ronald Reagan. But it is all stilted and postured. It is more ridiculous than funny.

Orr John Litel half of the Met's new bill, shading his squinting eyes umier a broad sombrero and spreading his South-of-the-Border accent Ever since "Viva Villa" Beery has from time to time shaded his squinting eyes and manipulated his accent. "The Bad Man" is one of those times.

"The Bad Man" was a Broadway play back in 1920. and it' is still more of a play than a movie. It depends more on laughs than it does on action, and its laughs are few and scattered. Most of them are supposed to come from Lionel Barrymore's gol-darning and dad-blasting his way through the part of a wheel-chair rancher, while Berry tries, with his bearish clumsiness, to arrange a romance Ma. Joad, grown much older and Infinitely livelier, than she was on her.

the Dust Bowl to California, to the Brooklyn Strand Theater yesterday in a little business called Fall Out." Ma Joad (alias Jane Darwell) just never gets the breaks. First it was her heartbreaking trip In "The Grapes of Wrath" and now It Is the part of Orandma Allen. Grandma is pretty silly for her age. Ma Joad' must have been a little ashamed of her by the time she polished her off. Grandma Is a sucker for cops-and-robbers radio serials.

She listens to the. things by the hour, adopts their lingo and talks back to the radio villains. The radio keeps her frisky so that she also talks back to Alan Hale, her skinflint son-lh-law, and has energy enough left to keep prodding her grandson Into getting ahead in the world. Grandson is the meek kind whn hasn't put loose from Mamma's Sign Mary Astor For 2 Film Parts Mary Astor, who gave a brilliant performance with Belt Davis in 'The Great Lie," has been signed by Warners for two more pictures. She has been set for the feminine lead in "Knight of Malta," based on a Dashiell Hammett mystery novel, and for an important role with Bette Davis in "The Gay Sisters," based on the Stephen Longstreet novel.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has acquired motion picture rights to "DuBarry Was a Lady," the musical by B. G. DeSylva, Herbert Fields and Cole Porter. The stage cast Included Bert Lahr, Ethel Merman and Betty Grable. Victor Jory, veteran of many a screen "heavy" roles, was cast today as a Western lumber baron in the forthcoming "Hopalong Cas-sldy" drama, "Timberwolves," starring William Boyd.

Benny Rubin returns to the screen after a five-year absence to play a featured role in Columbia's "Heaven Can Wait," Robert Montgomery is starred fn the picture with Rita Johnson and Evelyn Keyes as the feminine leads. egging Eddie on to sell In advance the Inheritance he is to get when his mother passes on; helping him buy a defunct bedspring factory; giving him hints on how to sweep pretty Joan Leslie off her feet, and even saving the day for him when a couple of crooks buy up the Inheritance papers and scare the life out of skittish Mamma. Grandma works very hard at the Strand as If hard work could save "Thieves Fall Out." John Litel is worse off than Orandma Jane Darwell. He Is In "Thieves Fall Out," and he's In "The Big Boss," too, on the second hal of the bill. It would be interesting to know what Litel did to deserve such a fate.

Manager Arthur French's idea is to convert Manhattan Beach, which includes Oriental, into an. all-year-round gathering place for the younger element.

He is looking forward to an influx of uniformed men. "We have the gals, and it seems to us that the men in uniform like the gals," observes French. Surf Ave. feels much the same way. Luna's Face Lifted Perhaps the most ambitious change at the island is being made in Luna Park, which has had its face lifted so that it once again takes on the appearance of a redoubtable rival of Steeplechase Luna, which burst upon the Coney scene In the early 1900 under the brilliant guidance of Fred Thompson and Skip Dundy, is now managed by William Miller in association with Edward J. and Harry Lee Daniiger and Milton Miller is a former vaudevlllian and theatrical booking agent. "They are brought to me from all over the city of New York and I never had a complaint, investigation or coroner's Inquest." Coney is dotted with Dr. Couney's Baby Incubator alumni. There's an electrician at Steeplechase Park; two workers at Luna Park; one girl won a high sales prize as a clerk in a Coney store, and Dr.

Couney helped her win by purchasing several dollars worth of gadgets.
