The government says Kevin Lee Poulsen stole classified military secrets and should go to prison. But his lawyer calls him an intellectually curious computer nerd. Poulsen, of Menlo Park, worked in the mid-1980s as a consultant testing Pentagon computer security. Because of prosecution delays, he was held without bail in a San Jose jail for 20 months before being charged this week. His attorney, Paul Meltzer, said Thursday that Poulsen did not knowingly possess classified information.

There is very little chance of making the slam unless the missing clubs are divided 4-4, so you should plan from the start to establish the club nine as your twelfth trick.

Trump the spade lead in dummy, ruff a club, cash the ace of hearts, trump the jack of spades, ruff another club, trump the ace of spades and ruff a third round of clubs. Draw trumps, lead a diamond to' the ace hnd cash the ace of clubs, discarding a diamond. If both opponents follow to the ace of clubs, cash the nine and discard another diamond. Then congratulate yourself on a fine performance in making a poor slam contract, as you were a 1 underdog when play began. 2.

You start with eight tricks and the problem is to find a ninth. Oddly enough, you are sure to make the contract regardless of how the adverse cards are divided if you invoke a very unusual play. Lets first suppose you tried to establish the ninth trick by leading a low spade to dummys ten at trick two. You would go down if South won the spade, returned a heart, and it turned out that North started with five hearts to the king and the other missing spade honor. This outcome can be avoided if you play the ace of diamonds at trick two, cash three club tricks ending in dummy, then lead the queen of diamonds and discard the ace of hearts! Once you do this, the contract is ice-cold.

The defense cannot stop you from either getting to dummy to cash nine tricks or getting to your hand to achieve the same result. You give away a trick by discarding the ace of hearts, but it comes back wLh They are attempting to make him look like Julius Rosenberg, Meltzer said of the man executed in 1953 for passing nuclear-bomb secrets to the Soviet Union. On Monday, Poulsen pleaded innocent to all charges. He was handed over to U.S. Marshals in San Jose on Wednesday and was being held at a federal center in Pleasanton near San Francisco. DENNIS TIIE MENACE THE FAR SIDE BLONDIE Clinton might probe Iran loan scheme LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) President-elect Clinton said Thursday he would consider an investigation of the Bush administrations handling of an illegal loan scheme to Iraq. Clinton, answering questions at a news conference to announce the appointment of his top economic aides, said he would make his decision after consulting with his prospective attorney general.

We certainly need to know more than what we know now, Clinton said. I want to know what else I should do, he added. Attorney General William Barr on Wednesday rejected congressional demands for the appointment of an independent counsel to examine alleged wrongdoing in the prosecution of the $5.5 billion in loans by an Atlanta bank branch. Democrats, including the chairmen of the House and Senate Judiciary and Banking Committees, contend that the Bush administration botched the prosecution of the Atlanta bank manager in order to conceal its embarrassing policy of supporting Iraq up until its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Barr made his decision after receiving the report of a special investigator he named, Judge Frederick Lacey, who cleardd the Justice Department and the Atlanta prosecutors of any wrongdoing.

Missouri AG is accused of trading favors for money SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) The state attorney general whose name is on a landmark abortion ruling used his office and government funds to reward campaign contributors, an indictment of an aide alleged. Attorney General William Webster wasnt charged in the indictment unsealed Thursday. But an investigation into his office and his failed campaign for governor is continuing, and the indicted aide, William E. Roussin said he would cooperate with prosecutors.

Federal agents recently seized $106,203 in leftover funds from Websters campaign committee. The grand jurys indictment accuses Webster of, among other things, instructing Roussin to allow bigger settlements from a state workers compensation fund to campaign contributors and to give a hard time to noncontributors. Roussin, a St. Louis attorney appointed by Webster to defend the Second Injury Fund on behalf of the state, was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. The indictment says he conspired with others who werent identified.

The fund, financed by a surcharge on the premiums businesses pay for workers compensation, is a state program to compensate workers for on-the-job injuries aggravated by pre-existing conditions.
