Wayne Gretzky played his last National Hockey League game as his New York Rangers lost to Pitts- INDEPENDENT AreaDeaths Elizabeth 'Liz' Primrose Perry Hammerstrom Benner Elizabeth Benner, a longtime resident Billings, passed away April 1, 2009, in where she had lived 2005.

She was 85. born in Billings on 1923, to Ida Mae Primrose Perry and Dr. Wilson James Perry. Liz was part of the first class Benner to graduate Benner from Billings Senior High School in 1941. She and her treasured school friends Lorraine, Marion, Norma Amy and the late Norma R.

formed a "sewing club" and continued to meet every month for over 60 years. These were her lifelong best friends, whom she dearly missed when she moved to Helena to be closer to family. Liz attended Billings Business College and worked at Eaton Metal during World War II until she married. After many years as a dedicated mother and homemaker, Liz returned to work as secretary for the Psychology Department at Eastern Montana College. She worked there from 1970 until she retired in 1984.

Elizabeth married her first husband, Roger Keith Hammerstrom, in 1946 and raised five children. She baked wonderful bread and cinnamon rolls that greeted the kids after school. She and Roger loved camping with their young family in Yellowstone Park and Teton National Park every summer. After the kids were grown, Liz enjoyed hosting family reunions. Roger died in 1981.

Liz married her second husband, Walter Benner, in 1984. They enjoyed active retirement years and traveled to many exotic places with senior citizen tour groups. They volunteered with RSVP and enjoyed the Senior Citizens' Center luncheons with friends. Liz was very fond of her step-families, Walt's sons, Steve (Tricia) Benner of Dallas and Todd (Karen) Benner and their daughter, Hailey, of Billings. Walt died in 2002.

In her 80s, Liz enjoyed the company of special Benner friend, Fred Michael. They attended so many a of Little League games together, one team "adopted" them as team Helena, since grandparents. They were once kicked out of the Liz was Golden Corral buffet for July 15, taking brownies home in their pockets, but were eventually accepted back on good behavior. Liz loved tennis, sewing and watercolor painting. She liked to wear big earrings, sparkles and lots of pink.

She loved all types of live musical performances, played piano decently herself and encouraged her children to enjoy music as well. She attended high school and middle school band concerts long after her own kids graduated from high school. She encouraged all her children to get a college education. She completed large, unique, yarn -stitched nature scenes to adorn the walls of her children's homes. She spent over 20 years as a Sunday school teacher, Girl Scout leader, and Boy Scout den mother.

Liz cared deeply for others. She was proud of her family and satisfied with her life. She enjoyed her last few years under the loving care of the staff of the Waterford Retirement Community, who treated us all like family. She loved coffee and never met a chocolate chip cookie she didn't like. She especially enjoyed all the special attention she received from her friends at the Park Avenue Bakery on frequent outings with her son-in-law, Gary.

She died happy. Liz is survived by her children, DiAnn Blesse of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, Carol (Don) Oberquell of Clyde Park, Sonia (Val) Lundin of Wilton, N.D., Joan (Gary) Anderson of Helena, and Donald (Adella) Hammerstrom of West Richland, 11 grandchildren; two great -grandchildren; and by her brother, Wilson "Bill" Perry of Carmichael, Calif. Memorials to Intermountain in Helena would have been Liz's wish. No services are planned at this time. Darrell Wayne Bull Darrell Wayne Bull went to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 16, 2009, at the home of a family member in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Darrell was born on Nov. 26, 1959, in Athens, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rufus and Delma Bull, Jean Harper and Dwight Overton, and several uncles. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Etowah, Tenn. Darrell was considered a good -hearted person by all that knew him.

He attended school at McMinn Central High School in Englewood, Tenn. He also served in the U.S. Navy on the submarine USS Lafayette. He was a very talented construction worker for most of his life. Survivors include his son, Max Bull of Delano, Edwin Ervin Hoenke Edwin Ervin Hoenke, 78, of Helena died peacefully at his home in Helena early Wednesday morning, April 15, 2009.

He was born in Plevna June 20, 1930, to Arthur J. and Rose (Koschel) Hoenke. Ed worked as a cabinet Hoenke maker. Ed and Joy Edgar were married in June 1961. Two daughters, Lynette and Christine, were born to this marriage.

Ed and Joy later divorced. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother; two sisters; and a daughter, Catherine Hoenke. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Dorothy B. Job of Helena; daugh- Bradford Jacob Hoover Hoover Bradford Jacob Hoover beloved son, brother and father, passed away peacefully in his cabin on Feb. 7, 2009, after a battle with ALS, at the age of 51.

He grew up with his family in Escondido, Hoover and loved to travel, but the great outdoors was his place of choice. He hooked up with a buddy and rode horseback down the Crest Trail, from Oregon to California. His daughter, Athena, was born in 1984 and lives in daughter, Stella Bull of Florida; father and stepmother, Jimmy and Judy Bull of Etowah; mother, Juanita Bull of Helena; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ricky and Pamela Bull of Knoxville, Tenn. and Randy and Kelley Bull of Acworth, sister and brotherin-law, Sheryl and Kenny Poteet of Helena; half brother, James Bull of Virginia; and stepbrothers, Camden Sutherland and Bradley Sutherland, both of Etowah. He is further survived by nieces and nephews, Garrett and McKenzie Poteet of Helena, Raley, Alex, and Nic Bull of Acworth, and Brad and Trenda Dyer of Mohawk, Tenn.

They moved to Montana 13 years ago, bought some land and lived in a teepee through the winter. He often quizzed Athena, "What is wood?" If she answered, "warmth," she got it right.

When the time was right he cleared the land and built his cabin. Brad found his niche in Craig as a fly fishing guide, on the Missouri River. He loved floating down the Missouri, guiding his clients and enjoying the gorgeous river. He is survived by his daughter, Athena; mother, Betty; sister, Marianne; and brother, Kim. A memorial is planned in his honor in Craig at the boat ramp on May 2 at 11 a.m.
