The Charge Against Owea Schevlin, the Mint Employe Abandoned.

Owen Sclievlin, the suspended Mint emploje, ana Henry Gnode, a pool room tender, were yesterday put on trial before Judge Fell, in the old Court House, on a bill charging them with making a fraudulent assessment of voters in the Fourth division of the Eleventh ward. This is the first of a series of cases arising out of arrests made by both political parties shortly before the last election, charging assessors in certain districts with neglect of duty and with a violation of their duty under the law. The allegation was Hint Schevlin was the elected assessor of the Fourth division, Kleventh ward. Afterward ho received an appointment in the Mint, under Superintendent Fox, which diqualilled him from serving out the balance of his term as assessor. In consequence of that be made an arrangement with Gnode to act in his place and the latter was deputized by the Commissioners to do so.

There was a return made to the Commissioners' office of the Hat of qualified voters, signed by linode, containing a largo number of names of persons who wore not qualified voters. Some of the persons had long since removed from the division, others had died aud there were a large number of duplications. Jnode testified in his own behalf that ho had cupied the book as it had been giveu to him and if there were any mistakes or errors in it it came from the fact that he had coined all the names which were upon the list given to him by Schovlin and that Schevlin had told him that he should copy all of the names. Schevlin testified that he had performed the duties ot assessor in June and that he performed them properly and faithfully. Ho turned over to Gnode the June assessment, with marks to the names which should be stricken from the list Gnode was to make the extra assessment, his business being simply to Bit at the polling place aud add the names to the list of persons who hud been or might have been omitted at the June assessment.

Ho testiliod further that when he gave the hook to Gnode he Instructed him to strike from the list all of the names which had certain marks opposite to them. After the evidenco was all in tho charge against Schovlin was abandoned by the prosecution. The Jury retired to doHberate in Gnodo's case and the court shortly afterward adjourned until this morning, when a sealed verdict will bo returned. (J nod was permitted to renew his bail.
