I CHILDS, 86, DIES OF SMOKE FROM OVERLOADED HEARTH Special to the Brooklyn Eagle Merrick, Dec. 20-His fondness for a roaring in the open fireplace of his here proved fatal noire early yesterday to Luther Childs, former president of the Childs Company and brother of Samuel S. Childs, founder of the restaurant chain. Mr.

Childs, who was 86, died of suffocation from smoke from his overladen hearth. Neighbors had long been accustomed to the sight of the aged man trundling a pushcart about the streets. gathering discarded boxes. cartons. branches and other objects that might serve as fuel.

With these he cluttered up the library of his Spanish-style home at 19 Lincoln Boulevard. The fires he built in his fireplace often blazed so fiercely that neighbors were alarmed. A number of times they nctified the Nassau County police that the Childs house appeared to be on fire. Yesterday morning the odor of smoke awakened Mr. Childs' wife, Evelyn, and his stepson, Pierre, 13.

When they called to him. Mrs. Childs later told the police, he assured them everything was all right. As the smoke continued. they dressed And ran out of the house, calling to Mr.

Childs to follow. Dr. Frank Kaufman, Veteran, Dentist Dr. Frank Kaufman. a veteran of World War I.

in which he served as dentist on Admiral Sims' flagship, the U. S. S. Melville, died yesterday in Veterans Hospital, Northport. He was 52 and had been a patient since his discharge from the navy because of disability resulting from action in foreign waters.

A graduate of De Witt Clinton High School and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kaufman was one of the greatest sprinters and hurdlers in the United States during the prewar era. Surviving are two brothers. Charles a deputy Internal Revenue collector in this borough.

They found Mr. Childs lying unconscious on the kitchen floor.

Efforts to revive him proved vain. He was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. The smoke had come from a rug set on fire when a burning vegetable crate tumbled from the hearth. No other damage was caused. Mr.

Childs was born in Basking Ridge, N. J. When his younger brothers. the late Samuel and William Childs, opened the first Childs restaurant on Cortlandt Manhattan. in 1885, his part in the enterprise was to furnish dairy products from his farm.

However, he held the title of president of the company for a short time in 1929. In a reorganization brought about by William. then chairman of the board. Luther was named head of the firm Jan. 31.

Less than two months later, March 7, both he and William were ousted from control. Surviving besides the widow are two sons by Mr. Childs' first wife, Mrs. Anna McMurtry Childs, who died in 1924. They are E.
