BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE, NEW YORK, SATURDAY, APRIL' 1936 16 GREAT HARPIST Dr. Link's Book Catholic News Educators and school superintend Plymouth Service 'It Is Not Death to Die' Features Harpist The Hope of Immortality By the Rev. Charles W. Hubon Rector St. Mary'i Protestant Episcopal Church By the Rev.

Paul R. Hoover Pastor English Evanfelical Lutheran Church of the Reformation ago, In a far-off occurred thi INETEEN HUNDRED years events of that first Easter. to reveal to Jesus Christ lived In the fullness ol His humanity man what It meant to love and servi Mildred Billing, Internationally known harpist, will be the featured 'v4rtist at tomorrow's evening service ''t the Plymouth Church of the PU-; "fcrims. Orange and Hicks Sis. Miss billing frequently has appeared in private engagements at the White House.

Her last recital there was on Feb. 11. The Easter night service at Plymouth Church will be centered around $he portrait of "The Master," painted by the late Darius Cobb for the Rev. Dr. J.

Stanley Durkee, pastor of the church. The combined of 12S voices will sing at the "service. Among the selections to be played by Miss Dilling are "The Fountain," by Albert Zabel; "March of the Men of Harlech," arranged by John Thomas; "Claire de Lune." by Debussy; "The Forest Pool," by Tour-nier; 'Impromptu," by Pierne, and "Chaconne," by Durand. Miss Dilling comes to Plymouth Church at the invitation of Rowland Story, God. Foolish nd fearful men thought that they could defeat the mes sage and kill the messenger.

They failed utterly. In Christ's willingness to die for His Ideals we have the supreme pic. ture of self-sacrifice for the love of others. In the resurrection of Christ we have the other side of that human nobility which Christ revealed; we see the fullness of God's love. Love does not die either God'i love or perfect human love.

It it the divine mystery of life. The hope of Immortality which Christ made so convincing to the world at His resurrection has transformed and ennobled religious thought. It has sanctified our love. It has given strength and courage to go on In the conviction that" loss is temporary rather than final Jesus Christ taught men how to live. He taught men how to die.

He taught men how to accept death by knowing that whatever happens to their mortal bodies, God's love survives. Fear can exist only at the expense of love and faith. Nineteen hundred years ago far, far away and the message Is as fresh and vital and essential as It was that first Easter morn. THE world Is a looking gloss, and gives back to every man the reflection of his own face. Frown at it, and It In turn will look sourly upon you; laugh at it and with it, and tt is a Jolly, kind companion; live with it in quiet confidence that "God's in His Heaven," that He is our refuge and strength, and our faces tell the story that we.

dp not fear, though the earth be removed and though mountains be carried Into the midst of the sea. Two weary disciples, Emmaus bound, were not so sure the first Easter day that "through the ages one increasing purpose runs, and the thoughts of men are widened with the process of the suns.1' Hope had been critically wounded by a dying Lord on the central of three Golgatha Hill crosses. Their sad faces mirrored defeat, disillusionment and broken dreams. Vision the contrast between the faces of those on the way and the winsome, loving, triumphant expression of the Master as He approaches 1 No wonder, then, these were prevented from seeing the Easter Message on His face! Less wonder still that the Easter Message did not radiate from their faces! Men, as the Master, "must suffer these things to enter Into His Glory." Blind to this, how could these weary sojourners read the Gospel of His face? How could they comprehend the depth and Inner meaning of the message? The Easter message was written In His face and the world, as a mir deacon and member of the church for more than 50 years. Memorial Church To Offer Drama ror, thenceforth reflects the message, celebrated In song, In flowers and in worship: "It is not death to die." It is not the good news of unending existences, exemption from oblivion, or even of immortality.

It is rather the eternal truth that man, bejng Immortal and heir with Christ, when he leaves this weary road, "Midst the brotherhood on high," is at home with Godt We fail to sense the Joyous and triumphant message of Easter until our faces glow with the message, "Thy chosen cannot die; Like Thee, they conquer in the strife, To reign with Thee on high." i- "The Alabaster Box," three-act re-' "ligious drama written by Mary Harwell and Isabelle Meaker, will be 'l by the young people of Memorial Presbyterian Church, at ith Ave. and St. John's Place, at evening service tomorrow. The 'Rev. Ralph Conover Lankier, pas-' tor, will conduct the worship service 'Preceding the presentation.

Contrary to the teaching of some psy chologists, Dr. Link's view Is that one who Is now an Introvert can by the practice of religious ideas gradually acquire at least the main qualities of the extrovert. The book comes pretty close to being for everybody.

It teems with suggestions for the maladjusted. It is stimulating for those who are so fortunate as to feel contented with their lot. If it does not yield Ideas which will make them even more efficient, as it probably will, it at least will prove a useful tool in aiding them to help others. The sceptic may say that the rea son the doctor turns to old fashioned religion in the practice of modern psychology is simply the result of early environment. He is finding the ancient folk ways better in a time of confusion than many more modern ideas.

I imagine he would admit the charge; but he might add, as would that it may Just happen to be true that the reason the Christian religion which is now ancient because founded 2,000 years ago, and made possible by a thousand years of Jewish history before that works is because it corresponds with reality. BARILLA, Pastor Attacks Problem Of the Moderns Return to Religion' Is Story of Scientist's Reconversion to Christ By HENRY SMITH LEIPER Most Americans including many wrto never heard the word, are prag-matists. At least they feel certain that anything which works must be true and conversely that what is true must work. One ol the great hindrances to religious faith in a world of science has been the feeling that the accepted religious views were out of line with reality as revealed In the laboratory. That some of them are is very obvious. But more and more, thorough students of science are seeing that what they have to reject is not the religion of Jesus, but a good deal of the religion about Jesus which has grown up through the centuries, until he himself would not recognize as connected with his ideas much that bears his name.

Dr. Henry C. Link, who writes un der the intriguing title "The Return to Religion," represents the experience of many moderns. He grew up in a Christian home. For a time he took for granted the teachings of the Christian Church.

Then, ab sorbed in science, he drifted away. Dealing with Joubled minds, disturbed nervous systems, warped personalities, inhibited egos, and overindulged libidos year after year brought him. however, to the realization that the way to mental and physical health led back to the House of God (MacMillan, Book Not Didactic He tells his story in anything but a preachy manner. It is straight talk rom the shoulder and no mine ing words. Close observation of more than 10.000 cases whicli have come under his care not speculative thought has been responsible for his conclusions.

They are curiously in line with the teaching of modern religious leaders. He sees a genera tion of men and women who have been encouraged too often to please themselves and develop their own personalities without regard to so cial responsibility or religious obli gations. And he finds that the re sult of their freedom has been the abnormalities for the cure of which they have been forced to turn to a psychologist. In order to bring them dsck as nearly as possible to nor mal health and social adjustment he has been for years giving them certain assignments. By degrees he came to realize that what he has been assigning to them are the tasks which flow from a common sense acceptance of the Sermon on the Mount, the quintessence of the teachings of the Prophets of Israel as expressed by the one man who perfectly incarnated the ethical ideals he and they professed.

Dr. Link did more than assign he accepted similar assignments himself. Instead of arranging his life in complete indifference to the institutions of religion, the Sunday services, the obligations of Church membership, and the implications for home life of professing Christian living, he has brought his own con duct into conformity with the teaching and practice of the church. He frankly admits that he does not like to go to church. He would rather read the papers, sleep, or play golf.

But one reason he does go to church Is because he does not like it and because he knows from experience that doing some worth while things which one does not like is a sure cure for much that ails one. Book for Nearly All Perhaps the central idea which the doctor develops in chapters which strike me as the very essence of common sense from both the religious and the scientific point of. view is that of redemption through sacrifice, or the finding of self through self-dedication to the needs of others. He says that the teachings of Jesus on this point "he that saveth his life shall lose it" Is confirmed by all of his clinical experience. The introvert is the un happy, frustrated, hampered in dividual.
