16 THE MISSOURI VALLEY FARMER. January, 1915. HOUSEKEEPERS KNACKS. NEEDLE THDMD Design in Two Colors. can be made up the blocks or it This quilt pattern with strips between for it.

When the blocks are large it makes a beautiful all-pate rk quilt, especially if made in two colors. It also makes an economical pattern for scrap work. I do not know any name makes a pretty, comfort top, using flannelette pieces. Mrs. F.

P. Scott. R. 20, Chilhowee, Mo. BURNING a few pieces of zinc in the stove will clean the chimney.

Save all the zinc from your old washboards for this purpose. Mrs. John McBride, Sanger, Tex. Piano keys and ivory ornaments may be whitened with alcohol. Rub it on with a cloth.

When running rods through lace curtains put a thimble on the end of the rod before pushing it through and it will go easily. When grease is dropped on a hardwood floor put soda on the spot, then pour boiling water on it. The spot will disappear with little rubbing. Mrs. W.

Van Broeklin, Eagle Butte, S. D. When sorting the apples save those not spoiled too badly, peel, core, and make into marmalade. This will he found as nice as though made up in the fall. Mrs.

Gus Smith, Grouse, Ore. When fresh eggs are scarce I make one do the work of two. For corn gems or griddle cakes I use the yolk, and save the white for cake or pumpkin pie. Before breaking the eggs I wash them and use the shell of one egg each morning for the coffee. If I have an extra shell I put it in a cup and save it till the following morning.

Mrs. Helen S. Evans. Plainfield, 111. Quilt That Is Quickly Made.

This quilt pattern is made in 12 square blocks on white muslin. The design is developed in red. To cut it out a square of cloth of the size required is folded three times, squarely across once each way, to form a square one -fourth the size of the original, and again cornerways. This makes eight thicknesses of cloth, through which the design is cut all at once. It is then basted on the white background, and the edges turned under and blindly whipped down.

This quilt will wear and wash; I have used one like it for 20 years. Such a quilt will sell for $5. Mrs. William Sarvey. Gresham, Ore.

Chrystina Bee. Ballston Spa, N. Y. Most Blindness Starts at Birth. There are about 300,000 blind persons in the United States.

Probably 75 per cent of this blindness is due to two causes, sore eyes at birth and neglected eyes during early school life. The first cause can he removed in the simplest All that is necessary is for the doctor or midwife to drop into the eyes of the newly horn babe a few drops of a 2 per cent solution of nitrate of silver. This will kill the germs that produce the disease which almost fills so many blind asylums. Those who are about to become fathers and mothers should see to it that this simple act is performed by the family doctor. It costs nothing, is harmless, it prevents blindness, it can easily he done; therefore, it should invariably be done! The second cause of blindness is the neglect of childrens eyes during early school life.

Eye diseases are frequently quite simple at the start, but rapidly become worse if neglected. The eyes of schoolchildren should be examined every year.
