And Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne, the leads, don't seem to miss it at all. In its place, John M. More remarkable, though, is that the Criterion's melodrama has originality and gripping suspense in its own right, contributed by Nick Grlnde, its well-named director, and Karl Brown, its author. Summed up, the trio of Karloff, Grlnde and 'Brown has turned out an exciting piece of -screen make-believe that is at once fantastic and good fun. Then heart, such as Dr.

Karloff creates at the Criterion, is something that Dr. Alexis Carrel has been tinkering with for several years. There isn't the sparkling wit of "Love Affair," however, and, of course, there isn't the loff's Dr. Henryk Savaard who had killed a willing medical student and ties to highlight her wisecracks, and he rested heavily on the verbal and physical cuteness of 4-year-old Carolyn Lee. And he made Mac-Murray's snappy lines even snappier with excellent timing and an occasional meaningful gesture. But there wasn't much he could do with his verbose script that would make It frolic the way it should.
