But 1 do right here say that it is a disgrace to the white races, especially to Americans, that a man like Jim Mace had to search the South Sea Islands for a man to fight the fiee born Columbian, John L. Why did'nt Mr. Mace search through the "lour Indians, Cheyennes and other tribes for a man to fight J. L. S. instead of bringing a man here from the other side of the world one remove from Cannibalism, to fight an American.

I do not believe that the so called Slade is a half breed. 1 never new a half breed in Australia, New Zeal nd or any of the South Sea Islands, who possessed the pluck of the original stock. A company has been organized in Can-onsburg for the purpose of prospecting for a coke coal vein In that vicinity. They are drilling a well which is at present about 150 feet deep.

The company propose to sink the well 200 feet for coal and If they don't find what they desire they will drill it to the depth of 2,000 feet to test for oil, if enough teriltory can be leased. A small boy living at Black Diamond, came to town this morning. He was actually in rags, and his pants were nothing but old patches sewed together, which, by long wear were falling apart; he said his father had no work, and consequently no money. Mr. Henry Landefeld, with the usual generosity which characterizes that gentleman, gave the boy a good pair of pants, and hewent home rejoicing.

Nearly all the coke works throughout the Connellsvllle region are making 72-hour coke, and even at this rate are producing more than they can sell. When the ovens are turned on 72-hour coke the production Is decreased about 33 per cent. There is no trouble now about cars, but the furnace men don't wnnt the coke. The furnaces are not doing much, probably because of the tariff agitation, and the dullness in the coke trade will probably continue until the question Is settled. A wedding was announced to come off in onj of the West Newton churches a few evenings since, but at the appointed time the bridegroom came not, causing the ox-expectant bride to duff her wddlng garments and tear her hair In very wrath at the perfidious conduct of her affianced.
