Vegetables of alt kinds, fresh from the gardens every morning, Call and lee ui. JOHN U. BJfXVfi V. low, so shat passengers by train can go over. Quite a number of our citizens talk of going down to hear Mr.

Tilton's lecture cn the "Problem of Life." Probably some arrangements could be mada with the railroad company for a return train to Brownsviiic tho same night. It wt'old give many an opportunity to go who otherwise would not on account of having to remain all night. Mrs. Todd and daughter, Mrs. Hough, have closed their house, and are now visiting friends at a distance.

We understand the property will be for rent in the spring. Two men of this vicinity challenge any other two from Bellevernon or Ros-traver to a shooting match, with clay pigeons; time, place and amount of money to be settled by parties. Call at McCune's drug store for further information. Mr. Daniel Shearer gives quite a large party this evening at his country residence, about half way between this and Brownsville.

Both places will be wull represented. I notice they took with them two of our best violinists, and it will be safe to say theie will be a little dancing on the carpet. From the well known hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. S.

iv general good time may be expected. Several other socials are booked in the country for this week. Our young friends from town enjoy them very ranch. The ice started from this point about six p. making quite a noise i.s it gorged along the shore.

As yet we have heard of no damage. Passengers and mail for this point were "detained in Allenport. a. Fayette City, Jan. 16, '83.

LLOYD MORGAN. The Pittsburgh Leader has a dispatch from Freeport. which refers to the fact that Lloyd Morgan's time is about up at the Western Penitentiary, and says that in view of the fact that tbe Rev. Lloyd Morgan is to meet a friend here immediatly after his release from the penitentiary, some of our people are arranging a reception for him in Library Hall, in this place. It i said the hall will he gaily decorated and illuminated, and the streets along which he will pass from the depot will be trimmed as on holiday occasions.

Rev. Morgan, it is thought, will then deliver a lecture, and a collection be taken up for his benefit. Of course this is all sarcasm intended to hit those who mn after a man who is known to bo full of fault TUE ATLANTIC SUNK. Special Telegram to tbe Dally. Lock No.

3, Jan. 17th. -Yesterday the steamer Atlantic was sent out by her owners to break up the ico in pool No. 3, and last evening while engaged in doine so. near Liuictown.

a lanro hole was broken in her hold, sinking her in a short time -turning over on her side. She is now lying in deep water and will probahly prove a total loss. Tho Atlantic was owned by tho lirm of Sneathen Wilson, one of our most extensive coal firms; she was a first-class tow boat, valued at $20,000, having just recently been completely repaired and her name changed from Ed Hobbs to Atlantic. No one was hurt or in any way injured as far as can be learned by your reporter. The steamer Veteran was also engaged in the ice, but seeing tbe accident to the Atlantic, we'll into harbor and gave up the chase.

Special. IN THE ItlVER. Ctiarllo Coynn, of McKeesport, while crossing the Monongahela river on the Ice, to go to his work at Stone's coal road, had nearly reached tho opposite side when the ice broke and let him into the water. He managed to get hold of the Ice. and clung to it until it froze his fingers.

He realized that lie could not hold out much with great presence of mind bis lint and put it on the ice, where it froze fast, and then clung to it with the determination of a drowning man, realizing it to be his only chance for life, in this condition he remained for half an hour, when Miclmel Urosi discovered him and pulled him out. When rescued he was unable to speak or move a limb, 2'iim. It looks now as If two cent letter postage was to be one of llie good things that Con-gress will give tint country iu a very short time. Jane Fell and daughter Ida left on the evening train for a short visit to friends in Canal Dover, Ohio. The next Grand Lodge of United Workmen will meet at Greensbnrg for the session of 1884. The District Deputy will visit Henry M. Phillips lodge on next Tuesday night. The funeral of Dr.

Connelly took place at noon to-daj services at the house at 12 and the interment private at a later hour. Carruack said be didn't object to falling down, but did objvet to bringing up so suddenly as in craek nine of his false teeth. The wise man straddleth down the middle of the street in this slippery weather, but the foolish man who hath no overshoes, irmisheth over the pavement and breaketh his skull. The second section of engineers on the Southwest railroad extension are running a line, beginning at Wilson's run, aud following the Sawickley to the Youghioghenv. Abrakeman named William Mills, of Claysville, fell from a trestle on the Hemp-field, and was fatally hurt, on tho 16th.

We wonder what the average life of a freight brakeman is; they seem to be killed within about five years. Geo. F. Oebtl, station agent at West Bellevernon, has taken a short vacation, which he will spend with friends In Baltimore. We trust he will have a pleasant stay in the city where all the girls are hand-some and all the oysters fat.

The January Atlantic is one of the most brilliant numbers of this magazine ever issued. Several of the names which appeared in the first number twenty-five years ago and which gave the magazine Immediate fame, renppear In this number. The increased sales at Cypher's Bookstore show that tho Atlantic Is read by appreciative people who know that they will find' with-in its covers only that which Is best iu cur- rent literature. If a representation of one-fourth the actual number of tho river coal pits can voice the determination of the majority, then the miners in convention yesterday can be said to have done an unexpected and unwise thing. A strike is always an unpleasant thing; this one seems to be peculiarly an unfortunate one, in midwinter and with hardly enough work offering to keep the bake oven going as It Is.

Cyrus Clurk, cashier of tho Tradesmen's National Bank, Pittsburg, died Tuesday morning in Pittsburg. His heart was full of faith, hope and charity. He seems to have realized Gerald Mcssey's apothegm, that "There he none of all the poorest poor that walk the world's ways, worn, heart-bare, none so poor but that they may bring a little human love to mend tho world. to obstruct; spieuuiu drainage, oi nty ot grounds, capacity for ornamentation in the argest degree, proximity to railroad station, and ooat landing, line drives hi the pike in every direction, nearness to town yet removed from specially taxable ooundary.
