Now It Can Be Told In Reminiscences An Editor Looks Back Over the Years And Tells Tales on the Ministers By ESTHER COSTER As one turns the pages of life's book, and wonders with some curiosity as to what the next chapter may hold, the urge to reminiscence (a la John Heflernan) is too strong to be denied.

Albert B. Buchanan. Ass't 11:00 o'clock "PI.IASE HAVE MP. EXCUSED" Dr. 8tamm Interdenominational Back in 1918 the writing of women In politics became ol major in terest.

There was tots of iun mixed up with the hard work. Politicians proved to be much less black than they are popularly painted In spite of the scramble for lat political Jobs. Then suddenly came a shut to religious news. Much good-natured ribbing came from political friends, but they were told promptly and squarely that a Uttle religion might be good for politics. One day dear old Mr.

Gunnison asked this editor, -What do you know about religion? "Not a thine?" was the reply. With a twinkle in his eye the former Eagle president said. 'I thought so." Maybe time has not changed that status much. Who knows? Hard-Working Ministers Ministers are the hardest-working men In town, with the greatest variety of Jobs, and the greatest call upon their time, heart and purse of any class. And they earn twice as much as they get.

They are preachers, but they spend more time ministering than they do preaching. As preachers they are many men of many minds. There is the fundamentalist who preaches only the plain, unadulterated Oospel and believes anything else Is rank heresy. There is the man who gives more or less profound lectures on current events or social questions camouflaged as sermons. Then there is the sensational preacher, like one who admitted he preached in the morning to the "sheep" and in the evening to the "goats," drawing the goats in by a wild and woolly subject and then giving the same Gospel dressed up in fiery gestures.

One fundamentalist borrowed a book written by a clergyman of more modern viewpoint. He said the writer should be barred from the ministry, but he forgot to return the book. There is the man with a big church, and many outside obligations, who will always send a sermon at the last minute to help a harassed editor; the man who refuses because he "does not need the and the one with a very small church who refused a short excerpt but will "gladly send a long one with my picture." No second invitation arrived at his door. One long-standing dream has never materialized, a class in arithmetic for ministers. They do not know how to count.

When asked for a sermon of 500 words one gets anywhere from 300 to 2,000. Then the traditional blue pencil has to work overtime. Religious conventions differ from political conventions only in minor details. There is less noise, no conveniently located bar, and as a rule no smoking. But all the other familiar procedures of closed-door conferences, cloak-room lobbying and partisan electioneering are there in full force.

There is the man who loves publicity but sends only trivial news of little Interest to anybody but himself. And there is the editor's delight, the man who never sends news unless it is a "good story," There is the temperamental organ ist who is convinced he has the best choir in the entire city, bar none, and expects the editor to tell it to the world. There is the head of the women's group who is deeply disappointed, sometimes really-peeved, because her missionary luncheon is not on the church page. There was the handsome young minister who protested publicly at the over-solicitous attentions of the older women in his flock and finally had to get married in self-defense and take his bride to pastures new. Ministers are surely up against some pretty puzzling problems.

But let's not look ahead. Maybe the next chapter won't be as nice as this one. Baptist ASSOCIATE PASTOR The Rev. Ramond J. Cornish, new associate pastor at Emmanuel Baptist Church, who will assume his duties on April 1.
