Monday, December 9, 1996, THE WORLD, Coos Bay, Ore. Tage 9 i 1 Linda Melerjurgen, Editor Coast Life Tossing it Around in Port Orford AMaw plays sreh? wftft IPaelie irUigCi mower, while the surrounding coastal field grasses grew waist-high. Though the shore was a good distance away, a constant wind kicked up from the ocean and nestled our conversation in the whispering grasses Wind hissed. Twenty tosses back and forth. A car whooshed by.

He stepped into the throw and delivered the ball, the motions coming smoothly to his small frame he focused his eyes on my delivery. Whats your name? Wayne. The ball flew between us. Wayne Chandler. Later, Hartshorn writes I was hesitant to hold the ball as I had with other people, worried that it may damage the ease with which he was unfolding his life.

During the game of catch, the author asks Chandler, What appeals to you about living here? The answer is Well, you know, the most important thing is your family and your kids. You gotta raise your kids you know proper. You just gotta raise em to be good people. And in a town like this, you can do that. You know, weve got too many problems in America now with youth not having the family life, and I think thats where it all starts is with your kids.

You gotta spend the time with your kids and teach em to respect people and teach em to be honest and educate em not necessarily in school but in everything. Youve gotta teach your kids right from wrong because they cant teach themselves. Baseball: Nick Hartshorn nabs tales while wielding mitt. By Linda Melerjurgen Coast Life Editor PORT ORFORD Wayne Chandler, a janitor at Pacific High School, has bep jnade a star because he agreed to play catch with an author passing through town. Chandler is featured in the new book, Catch: A Discovery of America, written by Nick Hartshorn (MacMurray Beck, Denver, 1996), Order the book at South Coast bookstores, including Winter River in Bandon or by calling 1-800-774-3777.

The author, a reporter for the Denver Daily Sentinel, spent a summer traveling about the United States with three baseball gloves (one a lefty), two cases of ramen noodles and a tape recorder in the back of his car. He drove where his fancy took him and stopped for a variety of reasons, but at each stop he asked will you play catch with me? He came into the Greasy Spoon when I was eating before going to work, says Chandler. My friend Ralph was eating with me and we talked back and forth. I think at first we thought it was some kind of weirdo, but finally Ralph pointed to me and said Hell do it. Chandler says hes always been an athlete, but I always came back to baseball its my thing, I guess.

South Coast If you love natures feathered creatures or want to learn more about the birds in your own backyard consider the annual Audubon Bird Count as a holiday season activity. The nationwide bird count takes place during December and early I January each year in specific areas l-- He (Hartshorn) really brightened up when I said Id play catch. The encounter has led to several lengthy conversations by telephone and Chandler now finds it as easy to talk to Hartshorn as to his own brothers, he says. Hes just a nice, pleasant guy and hes fun to talk to about anything." Could the author throw the ball? You bet. He could catch and throw them, but Im not sure if he played organized ball.

He has the look and build of a long-distance runner. Chandler played baseball in Little League, high school and college. When Proposition 13 ravaged California, he lost his job at Roseville High School and headed out to tour the west himself, stopping to visit his grandparents in Langlois. His grandmother was ill and he stayed to nurse her until her death, then stayed to help his grandfather. Hes still here almost 15 years later.

For a time, odd jobs on ranches kept him going, but now hes employed at Pacific High School where the staff and kids have all had a peek at the book. 4 He still plays softball in Bandon and the conversation with Hartshorn took place just before the 1996 summer season began, he says. Of the people interviewed in the book. Chandler says he enjoyed reading about both a minister, Jim Hovland, of Harlowton, Mont, and a bar owner, Rob Peterson, a bar owner in Alzada, Mont. I also like the talk with the inner city kids (Pookie and Kk-Nut, Sgt.

Collins and Jackie in Inglewood, Calif.) because he wasnt afraid to ask questions, but he wasnt pushy, either. Chandler has his own autographed copy of the book; author Hartshorn wrote: This (a copy) is small thanks for throwing the ball with me. Im honored to have your words in the portrait of America. Yours, Nick. 1 Not all of the conversations in the book, tape-recorded while tossing the ball back and forth, are with casual acquaintances.

Hartshorn also arranged to toss the ball with Bob Costas, who asks his son to join in, and with actor-director Spike Lee, too. Some of the other ball catchers are an investment analyst, a school girl, a retired singer, a security guard, a hot dog salesman, and a junk collector. Here is Hartshorn writing about that day at the Greasy Spoon: The thirty-by-twenty-foot plot of grass on which we stood was a sort of oasis, tamed by a lawn This year, hell show a slide show called Identifying Local Birds at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Bend High School.
