To Modernize Old Bathhouse In Duffield St.

Complete reconditioning of Duffield St. public bathhouse, located in Brooklyn's First Ward district and one of the most popular bathhouses in the borough, will get under way tomorrow by Works Progress Administration engineers, according to an official announcement made public yesterday. WPA expenditures to rehabilitate this 34-year-old two-story bath building, which serves many of those living in the shadow of the Brooklyn side of the Manhattan Bridge who are unable to boast of their own bath tub, will amount to $205,407. Of the above amount $75,000 for supplies, materials and equipment called for in the plans and specifications approved last May by the Board of Estimate will be reimbursed to the United States Treasury from the city's capital outlay budget. More than 500,000 people during 1937 used these facilities, principally in warmer weather on Friday and Saturday evenings, according to a check of the records.

Schedule Change There are at present 90 showers in the building and uring WPA reconstruction officials in charge plan to establish a four-day schedule for males and a three-day schedule for females. Major features of the work include the laying of two flve-ply roofs with slag, reset with blue-stone coping and removing old roofing and skylight also brick work, rebuilding parapet wall, excavation for removal of old boilers preparatory to the installation of new ones, concrete base for first and second floors and construction of new walls for installation cf oil tank vaults. Other important work calls for installation of a new lead pan for the first and second floors to drain off any seepage, replacing the present leaking floors and to prevent plaster from falling. The men's and women's lockers are to be relocated and additional facilities and conveniences iastalled on the second floor. The old soapstone shower stalls will also be removed and new marble enclosures with copper mesh screening installed.

Shower and waiting rooms, including stairways and landings, will be haviiy wainscoted. Structural steel and iron work will provide new vent duct space and framing of the stairwell. Plumbing operations consist of installing lavatories, drinking fountains, new wall-type water closets, thermostatic-controlled valves and installation of a new hot water storage tank. The cast stone on the front of the building will be sand-blasted and granite will be reset and cleaned. Duffield St.

baths mark the ninth public bathhouse reconstruction in the borough to be undertaken bv the Works Progress Administration during the past three years. Exclusive of the Duffield St. baths, the modernization of the eight other bathhouses cost the Works Progress Administration $602 199. Seven nf tlie.se have been already reopened to the public.
