Supt. From Bolton Township Bolton Feb. 24th, 1879. Editor Traveler, Sir I deem it my doty, as having a full knowledge of the acts, to make some statements in regard to charges made against Mr. Walton, as Trustee ol Cress- well, in a Winfield paper.

I will say in the first place, from the ime Mr. Walton took possession the time of his deDarture. we made a full and complete arrange ment by which I was to conduct he business of repair on the bridge, and I have made every effort in my power, to procure lumber, and so far have succeed ed only in getting a sufficient amount to keep the bridge safe, and I will say to the citizens oi the two townships, that Mr. Wal ton has been in no sense to blame, and I have done the best I could, and the charges made have been both false and malicious, as the cowardice of a man who makes charges against a public officer and conceals himself. The public public, I think can understand that.

A team of mules sold on the street Monday under chattel claim for one hundred and sixty-six and one-half dollars. If we cons ider that wheat is worth but sixty-five cenU at Wichita and corn less than twenty cents, while pork don't reach three ceuts, the mules brought a good round price. Its twenty per cent, higher than they are worth at Kansas City.

Many of our people yet fail to realize that prices have declined and must remain low for a long future. Go from home and observe how the world moves and you will soon observe that a dollar to-day has a much greater purchasing power than the dollar of 1877. Editor Traveler: I wish to ask whether there is any city ordinance against ringing bells at improper hours? Last Friday evening alter the Literary the school housu bell was rung some fifteen minutes. It was at a late hour and it was enough to startle any person. For my part I took a good deal of trouble to go and look to see if there was not a fire.

If there is no ordinance at present ought not the Council to pass one imposing a fine and imprisonment on any person ringing any of the public bells when there is no occasion for it? Citizen. Dan Horn has presented the State Historical Society with a sample ef tea, said to be taken from the cargo thrown into Boston Harbor in the days of the Revolution. As three hundred thousand tons have sold as samples from that cargo, will the supply ever end? If the societ' is hunting samples just send an agent down here, and we can show you tea that should have been thrown into some harbor about the time Columbus was iu search of this continent. Mr. Scott, of St.

Louis, has leased the Central Avenue Hotel for three years, and contracts to repair and refurnish the house, and keep a first-class hotel during his lease. This is what the town is much in need of, and the bus iness men cannot a Sard to see the place go down on account of no first-class accommodation lor travel. Mr. Scott takes possession on the 1st of we believe, wijl so conduct the house that none will have cause to complain. The youth's paper is one of the best in the country, free from sensational and vicious readiug, bright, useful and entertaining. Knight, of Arkansas City, will de liver an address at Grange Hall, Pleas ant Valley township, next Saturday evening. 1 his will be the second in a course of lectures occuriug every two weeks under the auspicies of a committee of South Bend Grange.

These lec tures are public and lree. AH are cor dially invited to attend. James Kelly, ex-Post Master at Win field, was shot on Saturday last by Manny, at that town. Klly is said to have received two loads of bird shot in his side, and his condition is very serious. Wc have heard two or three dif ferent reports of the affair and all poiut to whisky as playing a full hand at the game.

If the Legislature is very anxious to make a record on the R. R. question, let it legislate to reduce the rates of, the Pulinaot Palace Car Company. When it costs a traveler more to loflge over night in a sleeper than to oocrupy a bed at the best hotel In New York It is time a change was made. Arkansas City is the key to the whole Southwest Indian Territory and is the largest and most Important point on the South line of the State west of the 96 degree of longitude.

Bear that in mind, my friend, while you search for a location. We call attention to those compelled to borrow money, to Curns Manser reduced rates of Interest. The farmers produce has gone down to the last notch in price, and the rates of interest should go down with Stranqers who visit our city are surprised at the large trade our mer chants are doing. Frauk, of Chicago, gave us a call last week. Corn is worth fifteen cents in trade at this place, and large amouut3 in store. Messers Stcbbs and Gilbert of the Kaw Agency, gave us a call last week. Come again. Tu Eyelid days of Spring are upon us.

Boys are bare foot and farmers are sowing oats. Take a square meal and a good nishts rest at the Tremont House as you pass through Wichita. Col. Davis proposes to conuect Arkansas City with Wichita or Independence by telegraph. From every direction we receive letters ol enquiry relative to our town and surrounding country.

-One of the Traveler boys has bought a new suit, and now looks like an Alderman with full pay. Mahlox Stubbs Esq, reports a three "inch fall of snow at the Xaw Agency on the night of the 18th, inst. Who has a good farm to rent? We bear frequent enquiries for such. Ad vertise it in the Traveler. The uppermost thought in the minds of many is, Will the road be built if the Legislature defeats the bill Geo.

R. Walker is closing out the Johnson dry good stock at Win field at assignee sale and the store is crowded with purchasers. Lkm Cook has sold his larm in South Bend and returned to Shawnee county. Farming was a little to slow for him. Leni is a good business man, The out look seems to point to the direction of filling up the Territory South oi Kansas with small tribes of Indian.

Perfectly harmless, old lady. Pon't be afraid, Dr. Chapill, of Illinois, and Mr of St, Louis, have been "taking in" our town and surroundings for the last few days, and report themselves well pleaa--ed with the out look. Many Kansas newspapers are in the habit of ending out merchantile handbills la the shape of ''supplements Is a violation of the postal law, and makes the publisher liable to a fine.
