WHY OUR PRICES ARE THE LOWEST As many of our patrons have repeatedly asked why our trices are invariably lower than those of our neighbors, Ave feel constrained to offer the following explanation: AVc buy in large quantities, and when importers and manufacturers need ready money they turn to us. If we can purchase at satisfactory prices we do so, and it is rarelv that Ave fail in making our own terms. You can readily see why prices here are from one-lift to one-third loAver than elsewhere. Under our system, too, only the neAvest and most desirable a'oods lind their Avav here. We carry no old, undesirable stock everything; is new, right and proper.

The rules of fashion are closely observed, and instead of being followers, as most stores "are, Ave lead with the freshest creations from the Old and Xew "Worlds, frequently disposing of a season's stock before competition recognizes the fact that there has been a change. COLORED DRESS GOODS Have nothing prettier or move desirable in their family connee-t ions than Bedford Cords. Some especially noteworthy beauties are ottered to-day at the lowest price of the season. Exquisite shades of Myrtle, Gray, Navy Blue, (Javnet, Provn and Black, to' inches wide. $1 the yard.

The regular value of these goods is 81.75. Note how much you can save. BLACK DRESS Bobcs have been reduced in price. The simple comparison between the old price and the new shows how much they have been marked down: 16 Robes, reduced from to $7.50 the Robe. CHENILLE PORTIERES At $10 the pair are conspicuous for worth and beauty.

The price-is verv exceptional, as trade all around us demands 814 for this same Curtain. Choice assortment of colors. A CADEMY OF MUSIC. NTKISCH. 0 0 BOSTON BOSTON SYM PHONY OHCH FSTHA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA bi Performers.

TRUSS EsTAHLlsll.MENT. SOUTH M.liVEN I'll ST REET. THE HEY MARIE November 7 MADAM MOD ES A Timely Topics anil Dally Dolugs of Interest to the Social Circle. A number of Philttdclpuians are expected to attend the ball, on Friday night, at Tuxedo Park, the gay resort a short distance outside 01 New Yoru, on the Erie Railroad. It was hardly to be expected that the recent visit of James G.

UlMne. toruiladel-phla, would pass without sonio episode of a dramatic character, there seems to bo such a tendency to run tothedramatlcon botlisicles of that lulellcltou8 domestic association. With her was the beautiful boy, James (, Wninn. Sd. and it bad been arranged that while the mother was here she would allow her husband to lake the child to Atlantic City to see Mrs.

James G. Blaine, who Is very fond ot him. The most positive assurances bad been given by the Blalue family that the child would be returned. Something, however, happened, and Mrs. Blaine lelt where she had been staying just before the time appointed.

It is not known if she Is yet in the city. Statements have been made that young Mrs. Blaine at the last moment became tearful that her bus-band Intended to retain possession of the child. Another explanation is that Mrs. Blaine, upon hearing her husband's name associated with that of a fair but erratic Philadelphia divorcee, well known in fashionable circles, feelinB tee possibility of reconciliation through the child more remote, concluded hastily not to allow tbe boy to Bee his father or grandmother.

Anyhow, the interview which had been arranged did not take place. Tbe occasion of young Mrs. Elaine's visit to Philadelphia was the funeral of a distant relative. The Misses Roberls will not occupy their handsome house this winter, having sailed for Europe They will spend Christmas in Paris. Possibly there are ladles in Philadelphia who will feel a touch of sympathy in the harrowing story tcld on Thursday iu the New York Court or Quarter Sessions.

Matthew Carney was arrested at the instance of some ladles counected with the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals whom ho was driving home. Counsel for Carney here told tho court that the aflair occurred at 4 o'clock in tho morning, and the prisoner added: "They bad a lot of tin cans wid 'em." "Permit me, your Honors," said Mrs. Devlne, he complainant, "to explain. Wo are members of the Midnight Band of the Band of Mercy. Our object is to feed and care for stray and homeless cats.

There are thousands of these poor creatures who never show their faces except hetween 2 and 4 o'clock in the morning, when wicked boys are asleop and cruel men are too drunk to uso their canes. The feed we carry In baskets and tin cans when on our errand of mercy. We also take catnip, which is to the cat what wine is to tbe delicate manor woman. Then, we have Home for Friendless Cats, but we are obliged to keep Its location a secret to prevent bad boys from throwing poisoned meat to our littla ones, as was done at our lormer home." A good many of the fancy young men in this town are at the present moment much disturbed about getting tbo proper kiuk in tbelr hats. Tbe soft slouch hat with a caved-incrown, generally of allglitcolorand kuown as tbe Homburg hat (because the Prince of Wales first wore It thcre which has so generally taken tho place of the derby, was first Introduced In this country by a Philadelphia hatter.

Through tbe same medium an even later hat known as the Carlsbad, which has the peculiarity of a brim differing in color from the crown, one black and tho other gray, and the whole hat made of soft Air, has made its appearance here. Much of the style and becomlncnoss of these hats depends upon tho Indentation of the crown, and there is quite as much science in getting it Just right as there Is in lying a white cravat. Only the initiated or those who have teen to Carlsbad and saw how Wales wore his know just the proper kink. Every day or so a blockade of cars occurs cu some of the street car Hues, tbe Chestnut and Walnut being the worst, and passengers lind that some agent of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has taken out a lame horse. One of the agents said in speaking of the matter: "The superintendents of stables are required to utilize all their horseflesh and will send out a Inmo or 111 horse when they can, If only for a trip.

They won't do It while we are aronnd the stables, but we catch them along tbe route and generally about dusk." MlssWymnn, one of the handsomest and roost stylish young ladlei of Minneapolis, who camo to Philadelphia for health, has quite recovered nnd has taken quarters nt iheAldlue Hotel to enjoy for a season the social 11 fo of the city. At the special services which are being held tinder the direction of D. L. Anderson In old Fltzwater Street Methodist Kptscopal Church one of the most Interesting features 1b tho Kinging of Mr. and Mrs.

Baker, whoso voices ure sympathetic as well as fine and cultivated. As might have been expected there is an nwful kick-up over the awards for the best lady riders and tlio best ladles' horses ot the Country Club oxhlbltloD. Pretty nearly everybody expected a prize and of course somebody had to get left. Given anything that Involves priority nnd excellence lu which women and especially fashionable women are interested and thero is sure to be ft muddle and any amount of heart-burning. Pooplo talk about the slowness of Philadelphia, but, not to mention William Pcnn, It Is a question if tbe old leaders of the Assembly, who were not very precise, would not have quaked In their boots to see girls and married women high up In "sasslety" riding and racing horses around a course in public before acrowd and cheering them line Jockeys as tbey came in.

And yet it was a pretty eight, They talk, nnd well tbey may talk, of Tennyson, but there was Browning, who has societies bearing bis name, one of them here In Philadelphia, which moot and meet year ufter year and do nothing but laud him and discu-swhut be meant or did not mean In almost every Hue. Lines of Browning are gone over almost like Bible texts. Ladles especially differ about Browning undltlssaid that Mrs. Uloomfield Moors Is tbe only woman who ever thoroughly understood him. Wonder is occasionally expressed if Tennyson will ever bavo such an effect upon any class of minds.

The marriage of Miss Marlon Morris, of Baltimore, ana John B. Thayer, of Pbllndel. pbla, will take place November 9. Flags on the Union League, on the Public Buildings end lu many parts of the town were nt half-mast yesterday lor Mrs. Harrison.

The question bns arisen, by tho way, whether crape on the flag would not be more lilting in the case of tbo death of the lady of the Whito House than lu balf-mastiug the 11:. g. An altractlvo wedding Inst night In the Fifth Baptist Church was that of Ml Mary A. (lyger and Harrison Lundls.
