'ko. P.ko (Promin) And so it has come to pass that the Yankees lead the American League. But we are not surprised. Its routine, isnt it? For a while, anyway, it appeared that the big, bad Bombers were going to find it just a little bit tougher than usual to atart moving upwards. Oh yes, we know the AL pennant race has a good many more months to go.

But so what? Did you see what the Yanks did to the fast-stepping White Sox right in their backyard over the week-end three straight wins and the league-lead for the first time this season. They have won 12 and lost five, exactly what it was after 17 games last season. It must be discouraging to Chicago pilot A1 Lopez. The Senor left the managerial post at Cleveland because the best he could do was finish second to the Yankees. Now there is an indicaUon that he must settle for more of the same.

He isnt likely to get too much competition from the Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox or Detroit Tigers for the runner-up honors. Lopez might be thankful for this because then all he has to do is concentrate on the Yanks. And thats a big Job in light of what happened to his forces last week-end. -Lopez regards the Yankees as just another ball club. We dont think that that is his true feeling.

He might want it to be that way, especially to convince his club of the fact. But, whether the Yankees are wearing the travelling gray uniforms or the home game whites, something happens to the opposition when they take the field. You say this shouldn't happen to pro athletes. But it does. It isnt that they dont try.

In fact, it might be the other way around they try too hard. But somehow or other, something happens. We cite our owm professional football playing days. As a member of three different teams the National Football League, we cannot remember being on a winning side against the old rough and tough Chicago Bears in 12 games in the early 40s. On paper, at least, our player personnel was comparable to the Bears.

But somehow, before game time during warm up sessions, the Bears looked bigger than ever. Their white football pants and black jerseys and helmets made them appear as supermen. It wasnt that we were afraid of them. But we knew they were champions and were real tough and good. Thats the way, we believe, it works in the American League when the Yanks cometnrRcspecrfor tNirpastand present-reputation forms a block in the minds of their opponents.

Garrett Gets Flattering Offer Jim Garrett, playing manager of the Passaic Granatell Indians baseball team, is really excited over the second pro football offer he has received this past week. Garrett, who wa considering going to the Cleveland Browns, got a real good contract from the Ottawa Roughriders, in the Canadian Football League. Coach Frank Clair is anxious to get Garrett for his defensive play. And we guess it wont take too long for Clair to learn that Garrett can carry the pigskin and boot an occasional field goal. He really never' got a chance with the N.

In the fifth, Nutley tallied three times with Harry Boyko's single being the only safe hit.
