(AP)-Ted Williams, seldom hitless in major league seasons, and Casey Stengel, never speechless more than five decades as a player and manager, formally enter baseballs Hall of Fame Monday.

The pair baseballs most colorful personalities will increase the number of members in the Hall to 104. Baseball Commissioner William D. Eckert will preside over the morning ceremonies at Cooper Park in the rear of the Na tional Baseball Hall of and Museum. Stengel, 75, was elected in March when the veterans committee waived the normal five-year waiting period after a mans retirement and took special ballot. Fame Giants with Scranton How doe a major-minor league arrangement work? When the Giant this will come about in a month-cut their squad to the required 40 player maximum, the New Yorkers will hang on to an additional number of players by putting them on their "taxi squad.

Contrary to what a local minor league publicist thought a couple of years ago, the taxi squad doesn't mean that these players will be driving hacks for fares. The term originated In Cleveland back In the late 40 when the Cleveland Brown were members of the defunct All-America Conference. The owner of the Browns was Art McBride, taxi cab magnate. He had a fleet of Yellow Cabs and each hack carried a schedule of the Browns games. The Browns had players over and above the maximum that they wanted to keep dose to home.

So McBride put them on the taxi companya payroll. The players didn't drive the cabs, but were paid from the company's receipts. The taxi squad In reality consists of players for whom the Giants, in this case, have a high regard, but who lack the necessary experience to be included on the active player squad. However, there are instances when a player on the active squad, either because he's not playing the brand of ball expected of him or because hes Injured, will be placed on the taxi squad. In the past the Giants have had outstanding players like Homer Jones and Jerry Hfllebrand on the taxi squad.

One time they even had Jackie Kemp, Buffalo Bill quarterback, on it. Bob Swift Out for the Season With Malignant Lung Tumor In other American League games, Baltimore beat Chicago Kansas City knocked off Washington 7-2, Boston edgec Minnesota In 11 Innings 8-3 and California took New York 8-4. Coach Frank Skaff will run the Tigers until either Dressen or Swift is able to return. Swifts condition is described as one that should be responsive to treatment. Jim Palmer threw a six-hitter as the Orioles maintained their bulge over the rest of the league.

It was his 11th victory of the season. Brooks Robinson hit hi 19th homer. Jim Gosger and Danny Cater lomered for Kansas City as Washington lost Its fifth game a row. The Athletics had lone eight games without a iomer. George Thomas singled in a run with two out in the 11th to give Boston its victory.

Don Demeter led off the inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on Thomas smash between first and second. Tom Satriano hit a two-run riple in the ninth to push California into third place. Satri-anos blast came off reliever Jim Bouton after Rick Reic-hardt had tripled and Bob Rodgers was intentionally walked. Player, Management Decide DETROIT (AP) Even news that he has lung cancer couldn't take Bob Swifts mind off the plight of the baseball team he las served as player, coach and acting manager. Swift, 51-year-old third base coach who became acting manager of the Detroit Tigers when Charlie Dressen suffered a mart attack, was told Friday he has a malignant lung tumor.

He heard the news in Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where te was admitted July 14, suffering from food poisoning. Subsequent examinations disclosed the cancer. Team Doctor Visits Him One of his visitors Friday was Dr. Russell Wright, Tigers team physician, who said Swift-divided their conversation between he disease and Detroits performance on the field. Detroit had lost six straight gfnes, and Swift "said hed like to see them doing better, the doctor said.

Swifts illness prior to a night game in Cleveland, broke a six-game losing streak, winning 10-5. First base coactj Frank Skalf, who took over when Swift was hospitalized, was at the helm. Skaff will continue in charge of the team until either Dressen, who was stricken May 16, or Swift return, said James A. Campbell, Tigers general manager. Wright described Swift as pretty stable and pretty much at ease when he discussed the malignancy.

his encouragement and thinking. Wright said Swift probably will undergo X-ray or cobalt treatments within a few weeks. He will be out for an undetermined time. Swift, a plain-spoken man who is respected highly by players and Tigers officials, has spent almost all his working years since 1943 with Detroit or its farm clubs. A 13-year veteran of the major leagues 10 years as a Tiger catcher Swift managed the Tigers from May 16 when Dressen suffered his second heart attack, until July 14.

In March 1965, when Dressen suffered his first heart attack, Swift was named interim manager by Campbell. Campbell said then "there has never been any doubt in my mind abput who would take over the team if we suddenly were plunged into a situation like this one. Swift continued as acting manager through May 30, 1965, when Dressen returned. Swift caught three games in the 1945 World Series, which the Tigers won by defeating the Chicago Cubs. Williams, 47, who feuded with several writers during his playing days, was elected last January in the first year he was eligible.

The former Boston Red Sox star received an overwhelming 93.3 per cent of the votes of the 10-year veterans of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Hit .406 In 1941 One of baseballs great all-time sluggers, Williams was the only player In the last 25 years to hit .406 In 194L He finished his career In 1960 with 521 home runs and a lifetime average Of .344. -Williams, whor- lost- several seasons while serving two hitch es as a Marine Corps flier in World War and the Korean War, led the American League in homers, average and runs batted in tn 1942 and 1947, captured four other batting titles, and was the leagues most valuable player in 1949. Stengel retired last Aug. 30 as manager of the New York Mets, He played for Brooklyn, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and the New York Giants and managed several major and minor league teams.

But It was as manager of the New York Yankees that he gained much of his fame, guiding them to 10 pennants and seven world championships in 12 years from 1949 through 1960. 10,000 Will See Game After Stengel and Williams are inducted, a crowd of about 10,000 will move to Doubleday Field to see the annual Hall of Fame exhibition contest involving the Minnesota Twins and the St. Louis Cardinals. Before that game, Ken Fila of Omaha, will receive the Player of the Year award for 1965 in the American Legion Junior baseball program. Ford Frck, retired commissioner and chairman of the board of the Hall of Fame, will present a trophy to Dan Topping acting general manager of the New York Yankees, whose club won last years exhibition game.

Charley Dreyden, former sports writer from Chicago, will receive the J.G. Taylor -Spink Award, to be accepted by Hal Lebovitz, sports editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the national president of the baseball writers. The players on the taxi squad work out with the active squad, but are ineligible to play the regular schedule games. Now with the Scranton setup, the Giants will designate which of the taxi squad players will play with the Miners on Saturday. Hie players will practice with the Giants on Tuesday and Wednesdays and with the Miners on Thursday.

The Giants will pay for the players who will play with Scranton Miners. How much? The Giants and the players will decide this. However, if the Giants are interested in a player who is the property of Scranton, they will have first choice on him. The player will try out with the Giants, and If he makes the grade the Giants will pay Scranton between 14.000 and $5,000 for him. Hell be brought up immediately.

Before coming to terms with the Miners, the Giants tried to arrange a working agreement with coach Andy Robustellis Brooklyn Dodgers of the Continental League. It didnt materialize because the Continental League has a rule which forbids the Doggers, or any team in its league, to give up any of its players before the seasons end.
