Some industrysourres discussing the proposed changes In model redesigning programs emphasized that it docs not contemplate withholding major engineering advances for four eyars. In this connection they refer to improvements in automatic transmissions, inereasea in engine compression ratios and other advances that can be integrated without extensive retooling.

-Examples of this can be found in the transmission Improvements, higher compression ratios and a new torsion suspension system adopted for 1955 models by one manufacturer who does not claim his new cars are completely redesigned. 3-Wheeled Car Makes Its Debut NEW YORK A three-w heeled Tri-Car made its national debut at the Universal Travel and Auto Sports Show at Madison Square Garden Saturday. The use of a From 1939 until the end of 1952, approximately 10,500 cars In this country were equipped with air conditioning, Kent said.

During this period none of the automobile companies produced their own systems. The past year was the first one In which several major companies have built air conditioning units of their own design for passenger car installation. One of the most Important lessons learned to date in the design Customer demand for passenger car air conditioning which exceeded the most optimistic expectations of automobile manufacturers last year will continue to increase P. Y. The directory boards are slated to be in use before summer, when the seashore resorts close to the Parkway are expected to, draw a great number of new visitors. Each listing will include a suggested exit number toj rescl a given destination. Exit signs themselves are undergoing revision to the extent that area designations may replace individual points in the legend. Area designations covering the greatest population, best geographical description and major traffic junction points are to be used.

In northern New Jersey, for example, the following northbound exit signs are planned: Exit 142, Hillside-lrvington Area (Chancellor Avenue); Exit 142B, Irvington Central Area (Lyons Avenue); Exit 144, North Irvington-Newark Area (South Orange Avenue); Exit 145, East Orange-Newark Area (Central Avenue); Exit 148, East Orange-Newark Area (Springdale Avenue); Exit 148, Bloomfield-Montclair Area (Bloomfield Ave nue); Exit 149A. Bloomfield Belleville Area (Hoover Avenue); Exit 151, Montclair-Nut-ley Area (Watchung Avenue); Exit 153A, Clifton-Passaic Area; Exit 153B, Clifton-West Paterson Area; Exit 154, Clifton-Pat erson Area; and Exit 155-P, Paterson Area (Broad Street). Mapa AvallabI Other additions and changes are planned to make directions along the Parkway a simple thing. Backing up the signs along the route will be the official Parkway road maps available at toll plazas, louring services, hotels, gasoline stations and automobile clubs. Thousands of new maps have been ordered by the Highway Authority to provide motorists with the quick guide to the more than 220 points of exit and entrance along the Parkway.

The Parkway has been open for a continuous drive of 158 miles from the Clifton-Paterson area in the north to Cape May at the southern end of New Jersey. The Parkway route runs almost the full length of the eastern half of the state. It is slated to be open all the way to Route 17, Paramus, In Bergen Couaty this July. Edward C. Renner Has Ndh Agency Benner's Family Long In Business East Rutherford Family 87 Years In Transportation The Benner family has been attending to East Rutherford transportatiorf needs for 87 years now.

Edward C. Benner. Is the proprietor of a Nash agency at Hackensack Street and Union Avenue, across from Riggin Field. The same comer was the site of his grandfathers blacksmith shop in 1868. The Nash agency the only one on the South Bergen area is only a year old.

But the Benners have operated a gas station on the same site for 39 years. The present owner's father took a long look at the horseless carriage in 1916, decided that it had come of age and supplemented the family wagon building and horse-shoeing activities with a few gas pumps. A few years later, the black-smithing ended for good. The present owner, brought up in East Rutherford, is now a resident of Hasbrouck Heights. He has been in the family business for 25 years.

Advantages of the new init are outlined as: permitting a car driver to vary windshield wiper blade speed to suit weather conditions; permit the most comfortable speed for the drivers own vision and driving practice and silent operation. one or more each yearr But Industry experts believe the proposed program has tremendous cost-reduction possibilities. The cost of making a complete design change for an entirely new car runs into millions of dollars. Chrysler presents a good case In point.

In one of the biggest comeback effort the 'industry ever has seen Chrysler redesigned all four of its linep: And the cost, its president, L. L. Colbert says, amounted to more than 250 million dollars. Before World War II such complete change undoubtedly could have been made for from 60 to 80 million dollars. Now It costs more than 60 million Just to bring a new V-8 engine to the assembly line.

A question that arises Immediately In connection1 with the proposed new redesign program is its effect on the smaller producer. Can a smaller manufacturer successfully market a car whose design has not been changed for four years. The answer, of course, Is an unequivocal yes. The reason Is that startling changes can be made in the appearance of an automobile merely by altering front fenders, grille, hood and quarter panels. This has been done before.

It is important to the smaller concerns to stand the huge costs of frequent basic engineering and styling changes.
