R. A. Wiles The Beacon Baptist Church began early in 1953 As a mission effort supported by the Arkansas Missionary Baptist Ass'n. Brother George Greshem served as missionary for this effort. After many trying experiences and real blessings from the Lord, the mission was organized into the Beacon Baptist Church on Oct. 8, 1953 at the Mississippi County Court House here in the city of Blytheville. There were nine people with letters of recommendation from other churches that made up the newly organized church. At the time of organization, the church was meeting on West Vine Street in a rented house. In January of 1954 the church purchased property consisting Of two lots and a dwelling on the corner of Ash and 20th. This 'dwelling house was used for worship and educational facilities until 19B9 when the present auditorium was erected. In 1963 the church purchased two additional lots and erected the first floor of a two story educational building. Then in 1966 the church purchased one lot with building for the purpose of expanding the educational facilities. The growth of the church in membership throughout these years has been phenomenal to say the least. From her humble beginning with only nine members she has grown to a present membership of 291 people. As is true with any organization and certainly true with churches, the experiences have been varied. In spite of heartache and trial the people have remained faithful and God has blessed abundantly. Many of the citizens of Blytheville that are nqnmem- bers have given generous contributions to the church in many ways. This too is responsible for the success of the church. Beacon has been and is today graciously received by the people of this city and we are indeed grateful for this attitude. Our report for the past year showed an income of $14,625.54; an active membership of 250; an average attendance for the year of 139 in Sunday School; and 101 additions to the church by baptism and letter. Beacon Church is associated with the Jonesboro Mission-. ary Baptist Association; Arkansas Missionary Baptist Association and the North American Missionary Baptist Association. We give approximately 20 percent of our income to missions, benevolence and Christian education. Former pastors are: Brother George Greshem from the beginning until September, 1954; Brother j; J. Johnson from September, 1954, until February, 1957; Brother Schashlin from February, 1957, until January, 1961; Brother Cecil Hughs from August, 1961, until August, 1964; Brother R. A. Wiles, our present pastor, has been here since September, 1964.
