GUTTED BY FLAMES The Ilay mnr krt Theatre nMnrf, at Nearly Destroyed. Chicago, December 1. Fire broke out at 0 o'clock thin morning in the II ay market Theatre buildirur, nitimted fit Ml nnl 1(19 West Madison street, the main thoroURhfnre of the must populous side of Chii-ago. It proved one of the worst fins which the Fire Department has had to contend with for many years, on account of the freezing weather, which caused some delay in getting all the streams to play on the burning structure. The front part of the building, which is occupied by stores, saloons and the offices of doctors, dentists, photos rap hers, real estate agents and jewelers, was completely gutted.

The fire wall, which separates the theatre proper from the front of the building, saved it iron, destruction. The only done to the theatre, managed by Will J. Davis and George Fair, was caused by water which poured in Niagara torrents into the foyer and a part of the second balcony. The loss to the theatre will not exceed $5,000. It in estimated that the loss on the.

building and contents will amouut to $00,000, The total insurance is 122.500 on the building and theatre, being placed on the former.
