Lebanon Daily News, Monday, April 1974 Police Get Mobile Investigation Unit The Derry Township police department has acquired a new mobile investigation vehicle at virtually no cost. The truck, which ordinarily would have cost the township from was donated by the Hershey Volunteer Fire Co. and reconditioned with the cooperation of community- minded businesses and civic organizations. The vehicle's only cost to Derry Township taxpayers will be for insurance and maintenance. The- truck, a 1952 International with only 27,000 miles of use, had been the fire company's former rescue vehicle.

Police Chief Donald J. Hack said the truck will be used as a special mobile investigation unit and contains a variety of equipment used by police in emergency or serious situations. Among the items in the vehicle are a first aid kit, a portable oxygen unit, flares, portable i highway barricades, emergency I road signs and blankets. The truck also contains fingerprint equipment, fluorescent lamps, special portable lights, a portable electric generator, plastercasting kit, crime sketching kit, evidence containers and a camera for work at the scene of serious crimes and accidents. The vehicle also is equipped for crowd control and riot situations with tear gas and smoke masks, tear gas gun, riot batons and helmets, bullet-proof vests, a high-powered rifle, extra ammunition and tear, gas and smoke cannisters.

Citing the importance of the new vehicle, Chief Hack said, "Now there is no need to leave the scene of a serious crime or accident to pick up equipment at the main office. "We'll use it in investigating all serious crimes and motor accidents. In the event of any kind of disaster, such as a fire, flood or plane crash, we'll be prepared, also," Chief Hack said. The police department made an inquiry about the truck's availability when it was learned the fire company was getting a replacement. Subsequently, the fire company donated the vehicle to the police department.

Hack said members of the police department worked in their spare time to prepare the truck for a new paint job and to outfit the interior of the vehicle. He pointed out that an effort was made to utilize the various talents of members of the force. As an example, he said Patrolman David Whipple performed some of the mechanical work needed and Patrolman Edward Shearer assisted with electrical work in the interior. Hack expressed gratitude to the fire company and to a number of local businesses and individuals who assisted with reconditioning the vehicle. Among those aiding the project were: Lou's Body Shop, which spray- painted the truck; Modern Rug which donated carpeting for the interior; Bonberger's Texaco, which contributed mechanical items; and Auto Parts, which donated needed parts; Hershey Home Center, which provided various hardware and electrical items, and Paul Boyer, who hand-lettered the unit designations on the outside of the truck.

When not needed for special investigation duties, the truck will serve as an extra vehicle for general use by the police department.
