MANDY SMUDGE. 1 was just tired out; my arms ached and my feet were sore and blistered, for 1 had been from daybreak till dusk following the plow up and down the steep side hills that constitute our little ranch, and so could scarcely keep my eyes open as I tried to 1 had before me Vol. XXXIV of the Century Magazine opened at page 419, and read this: "You suy toll fatigues you" "You would not say that a wheel Is fatigued, and yet the body Is just as material as a wheel, setting aside what the human mind says to the body it would never be weary any more than an inanimate wheel. Understanding this great fact rests you more than hourB of repose." Eddy. Closing the book impatiently, I mur mured, "If this old lady's Inspired utterance" is Christian Science what is the difference between it and the insane drivel of lunacy? And though 1 tried long and earnestly to solve this conun drum I was finally compelled to give it up.

Perhaps the reason I did bo was because 1 felt nervous and Irritable and the loud snoring of "Slippery Sam" 1 beg bis pardon, Dr. Samuel Slick, F. S. S. Defender of the Faith and Doctor of the Science of Spout, who was Bleeping and doing his "absent treatment" at the same time on the parlor sofa annoyed me, and I felt angry with myself for yielding to bis request for permission to stay with us a few days.

For Sam was indeed a full-fledged and money Just rolled Id upon him, as he had a patient or two in almost all the towns and villages for forty miles around who sent him checks for "absent So he smoked the finest of cigars and had always a case of champagne on hand to assist him in his "treatment" of his absent dupes. Distance was no obstacle to Sam's undertaking the cure of a patient, for, as it is written on page 424, "There Is no space or time to mind. A person in St. Iouis may be near me while I am In New York. Sit down and think of the person you wish to affect and you are sure to reach him.

Remember that every thought you think will be transferred to the persons thought of, if you think long enough and strong enough." Hazzard. "I cured heart disease without having seen the patient." Eddy, page 424. Thinking of all this as I Bat alone in my room and vexed that I had been weak enough to allow such a rank im-poster under our roof I tried to devise a plan of getting rid of him, and at last a bright idea struck me. BetEy had taken the children with her to her mother's to spend the evening, so with the exception of the "Dr." and myself no one was in the house except Manriy Smudge. Now, Mandy Smudge is an elderly spinster who conies to help Betsy on washing days.

I should guess that Bhe Is forty or thereabouts, but she is the possessor of heart as soft and susceptible as that of the most sentimental maiden of sweet sixteen, and carries with her wherever she goes, and reads on every available opportunity, love stories and poetry of the most maudlin and gushing type. Hut nature has not been kind to poor Mandy. Her long thin face is ter ribly pitted from small pox; her hair is of the most brilliant hue. and her eyes have the most horrible "cast" conceivable. In addition to this, when Bhe was a little child a savage dog bit off the greater portion of her nose, and so, though her heart is in the right place, her personal appearance 1b not what would truthfully be termed altogether attractive, und that Is the reason perhaps that she has uot hitherto met with one of those devoted lovers she delights to read about so much in her romances.

So, poor girl, when she found that the unfeeling men would not take hur willingly to their arms, she took to fainting spells and unceremoniously dropped into those of the "happy' man who happened to be the nearest to her. But even this poor consolation is now hurd to find, for when poor Mandy happens to appear anywhere ail the men as quickly disappear and It must grieve her loving heart to see the haste with which they do so. Even when she is out walking on the county road and meets oue of them lomiug towards her she is often pained beyond expression to Bee him turn back and run the other way or else climb the nearest fence and hide in the woods until she has got well pust him. She has even tried sending highly perfumed billet-doux to the favored one who for the time being had won her maiden affections and many of fur young and old bachelors have received one or more of those sweet toknn of her regard. 1 have one of them before me now.

I found It on the roadside where some ungrateful wretch of a man had thro mi it. On one corner of a sheet of brightly colored paper are a couple of naked little Cupids and on the other a pair of large sized hearts transfixed with a speur, and written in a large round hand are the following lines: "My dear luv, ther ros is red, ther vilet blu. ther pink is pretty an so ar yu, an so is she hu scuts yu this an wen we meat wel ave a kis." The rest of the page is covered with crosses, which, 1 presume, she intended to denote the number of kisses she would allow, or give; but as most of our neighbors are good climbers and runners 1 doubt very much if she ever succeeded in getting the full tally Mandy'a Now, 1 had often watched face when the "Ur." was explaining the truths and beauties of Christian Science and could see that doctrine had made a great impression 011 her mind, so I was not surprised when she told me that evening after supper that she should like to be treated by him, anl though 1 told her what a colossal humbug he was she insisted on try- ing what he could do and begged me to speak to the "Dr." for her. I knew Unit "wnen a women will, sua will, and so remembering ner mill I slipped down into the kitchen and told Mandy the lr" was ready 10 re ceive her, and then waking up tue sleeper I told him a patient wished to see him, and returned to my room and closed the door. Kor a time only the indistinct mur-1 mur of their voices reached me.

biit I bye and bye, as Sam warmed up to Ins 'subject, every word became distinctly 'audible, and I was really surpiised to hear the flow of eloquence thai issued, from his lips, and from the bottom of my heart pitied the poor willing dupe who so Migerly drank in his words, lie told her that she only falsely thought I that her face was scarred; that her none was as perfect as his own, and Singular in relate, lue manufacturers of that wonderful new California remedy. Then he told her that If she could see herself as he saw her she would per- eive that she was as beautiful as an angel. Quoting from Helen Wilmans, page 423, he said: "I am looking at you and I see you a beautiful strong spirit, perfectly sound.

There is not an angel In all the spheres sounder or more divine than you." I ought to be ashamed to confess It, but really I could not refrain from peeping through the key hole to see what Mandy was doing all this time. Poor girl, I saw her standing with a happy smile on her face, one of her eyes fixed rapturously on the floor (so 1 knew she was looking Sam right In the face) and just as I was going to turn away I heard her give a soft, llttl 3 sob. and then, throwing her arms around the astonished and horrified Doctor's" neck, she clung to him "like the ivy to the oak," frantically showering gratified kisseB upon his lips, whilst he.
